Title: Staff Page
Post by: Spriggan on February 21, 2006, 10:04:27 AM
Entropy has shown me the light of not updating the staff page in 3-4 years, and since Tage is the only one who can do so, I'm going to send him an HTML file with the new one.

So, if you're on the current page you are not guaranteed to be there unless you still write regularly enough for us (like two or so articles a year is good enough for staff writer I would think).

So here's the deal, post what Bio you want, if you're not sure if you're a staff writer then PM or E-mail me and I'll let you know.  If you want to be a staff writer but haven't written anything, then do so ASAP, it will be at least another 3 years before we update it again.

Here's the format:

Nickname: Spriggan
Real Name: Jordan Sanderson
What you write:
About yourself:
movies, Games, music currently listing, watching reading etc..
Link to sample article: this would be one that you really like.

If you are a staff member and are not a writer (ie editor, department manager, webmaser) SE and Fell will be handling what you position is so don't bother asking here if you are something because you should already know.

Nickname: House of Mustard

Real Name: Robison Wells

What you write: Tabletop Reviews and The Fog of War (occasionally)

About yourself:  Rob has two published novels with Covenant Communications, On Second Thought and Wake Me When It's Over.  He graduated from the University of Utah with degrees in Political Science and History, emphasizing in International Relations.  Although he used to spend oodles of time with wargames (particularly Warhammer and 40k), having small children in the house has meant the fragile minatures rarely come out of storage; most of his gaming these days is on the computer.

I'm thinking we want a limit to how many "favorite" things we include. And that we should put them in as regular text, not a vertical list.

hehe, Zing.

Just so you all know I had no intention of listing favorites vertically.  As for the amount listed, I'll have to see what everything looks like before commenting, if me or any of the Editors feel there's too much we'll let people know.
Title: Re: Staff Page

Favorites should probably be limited to 2 or 3 things.
Title: Re: Staff Page
Post by: Fellfrosch on February 22, 2006, 12:34:02 PM
Yeah, because these pages can only be so big.

Come on, who cares how many favorites we have? Is the Internet going to run out of room? I admit, I didn't read either of the Gibbs' lists, but I scanned them and was vaguely interested.
Title: Re: Staff Page
Post by: Entsuropi on February 22, 2006, 12:39:14 PM
I think the staff page should be about who the staff are, rather than shopping lists of their favourite cookies, branches of world militaries and types of lingerie.
Title: Re: Staff Page
Post by: Fellfrosch on February 22, 2006, 12:39:59 PM
On a review site, who we are is defined by what we like.
Title: Re: Staff Page
Post by: Entsuropi on February 22, 2006, 01:11:35 PM
Eh. Problem is, if you have a huge list of favourite films, nobody will see the whole page because they'll just stop reading. Can we have favourite films etc linked on seperate pages, so that people can get an overview of all the staff quickly but can go for the specific likes if they want (ie, while reading a review).

I don't know what "rushed pieces" means, but I just want to say that I really like toast with raspberry jam and scrambled eggs. It's really good. I know this is off topic and I'm not staff or anything, but what's new with a thread going off topic, right? ;D

I wouldn't, and haven't, read any of the favorite lists that were more than 3 items long.

To list more seems a) egotistical and b) pretentious and c) needlessly tedious.

Nickname: JamPaladin

Real Name: Jason Christie

Jam is the token Australian of the site. Familiar mostly with his first love, Video Games, lack of money and time during certain events left him instead with a passion for Role-playing Games and the CCG Shadowfist, as well as dabbling in tabletop thanks to Starship Troopers. Lack of money and time from certain events has left him never playing these either.

When he's not gaming, Jam is an amateur writer of Speculative Fiction, notably Post-Cyberpunk, and of 12-Syllable English language Haiku. He studies Education at University, and works for the same in varying positions, usually the Helpdesk. He plans to one day be a high-school teacher of english and Computers, or more likely, to avoid doing this by bumming around for more University Jobs while trying to sell out either as a novelist or writer of games. If you are an employer in either of these fields, feel free to contact him and offer him a job.

Favourite Video Games: Yoshi's Island, Secret of Mana, Serious Sam, among many others

Favourite RPGs: Feng Shui, FATE, Anything Narrative and quirky, like Octane

Favourite CCG: Shadowfist

Favourite Tabletop: Starship Troopers

Favourite Movies: Matrix series, End of Evangelion, Back to the Future, Serenity, Loser

Favourite Music: Kraftwerk, Anything Nerdcore Hip-Hop, Nerf Herder

Favourite Beer: Crown Lager (I'm an Aussie, it matters!)

Favourite Articles: The last Jam Session, my Mystical Ninja 1 review, neither of which I can be bothered linking. Maybe Modern Ninja. :)

Feel free to cut favourites as necessary, I'm not especially attached to them.

Post by: Patrick_Gibbs on February 27, 2006, 12:19:42 AM
In retrospect, I would have to admit that I agree that the favorites list's need to be shorter. These are my reasons:

It makes the bios too long.
Nobody really cares.
It makes me feel like there should also be a "least favorites" list.
It's too self indulgent.
No matter how many I put on the list, I feel like I leave something off.
"Star Wars," "Indiana Jones" and "The Lord of The Rings" monopolize too space.
Someone might be embarrassed to reveal that he liked "King Arthur."
Is anyone actually going to read these?
With Don Knotts dead, my enthusiasm for everything is waning.
It's hard to pick a favorite member of "The Monkees."
Choosing between :"Schindler's List" and Dave Letterman's "Top 10 Rejected Children's Books" as "Favorite List" is impossible.
Pits brother against brother.
Moving letter from council of Bishops.
It wasn't even Spriggan who complained about it.
With all of the suffering in the world, does it really matter?
When you really think about it, there were really only four different episode of "Frasier," they just rotated them, yet it was still enjoyable, which makes me feel confilcted about how I would rank it, especially since Kesley Grammer ranged from subtley engaging to campily over the top.
Cookies and lingerie?
Can't decide between "Casablanca" and Charles Bronson remake "Caboblanco."
I can't tell the difference between ABC News, "Hill Street Blues," and a Preacher on "The Old Time Gospel Hour."
It's hard to tell one Bill Cosby or Bob Newheart series from another.
I hate lists.

Ah, didn't realize you wanted one from me. Here you go.

nickname: stacer

real name: Stacy Whitman

Stacy occasionally reviews young adult and children's fantasy and science fiction. She is employed by day as an editor of children's and young adult fantasy books and holds a master's in children's literature from Simmons College.

Though it's hard for her to pick a favorite, the latest standouts for Stacy include books by Diana Wynne Jones (Howl's Moving Castle), Holly Black (Tithe), and Shannon Hale (Goose Girl). Her favorite movies include Persuasion, Bringing Up Baby, and Serenity. She's recently learned to play RPGs via an Eberron game, and has been branching out to minis games and Magic, too.

Current Nickname: Skarlicious (any nickname to follow will undoubtedly contain the "skar" syllable)

Real Name: Ethan Skarstedt

Skar is an assistant editor for The Time Waster's Guide (TWiG), with his primary involvement being movie reviews, both writing and editing.  In a strange autochthonic way he was also a founder of TWiG before it was ever actually founded.  Skar is a veteran of 10 years of marriage, 4 kids, the State of New Jersey, an LDS mission in Salt Lake City Utah, and two foreign wars.  Currently he works as a Graphic Designer/Pre-press guy for a marketing department in SLC and in his spare spare time is writing a memoir on his tour in Afghanistan (one of the two foreign wars).  When that's done he plans to pick up the writing of Speculative fiction again, get published, become rich, and stop working on anything but TWiG and more books.

His favorite movies are:
1:Equilibrium
2:The Last Samurai
3:The Truman Show
4:Gladiator
5:The 13th Warrior

His favorite books are:
1: "Armor" by John Steakley
2: "Starship Troopers" by Robert Heinlein
3: "Cryptonomicon" by Neal Stephenson
4: "Lord of Light" by Roger Zelazny
5: "The Green Ripper" by John D. McDonald

I've decided to stop slacking so much and reply to this:
Nickname: Jade Knight
Real Name: Michael-Forest Meservy
What you write:  Sundry
About yourself:  The Jade Knight is TWG's copy editor; the more important editors got tired of his posting corrections on article threads, and let him correct them himself.
When not valiantly battling improper spelling and prescriptive grammar, the Jade Knight goes to Uni in English and History, writes stories and poetry on occasion, and attempts to learn foreign languages.
He is currently engaged to a beautiful and talented neurologist-in-training, and probably will be for the rest of his life.  He can regularly be seen fighting against the status quo, and trying to convince people they should learn Welsh or Norman.

Favorite film:  Les Misérables (with Liam Neeson)

Favorite music:  New Age and Electronica
