Brandon Sanderson / Re: WoA question: kandra hunting (spoilers?)
« on: March 12, 2008, 07:09:33 PM »
i'm sure its true form also has something to do with killing it. i mean TenSoon said he killed OreSeur and nothing we've seen so far indicates how they can be killed. i'm curious as to what their true body looks like and its weaknesses.

hmmm...you mentioned that Rashek burned the power away like allomancy. i wonder if the mist is the gaseous form of whatever liquid was in the well. it obviously wasn't water in there.

wow thats a good question. who knows what vin would have seen. maybe she wouldn't have seen anything in the same way that a kandra can't be affected by emotional allomancy (at least without duralumin). or maybe it would show a mistwraith or a different body or maybe it would show a kandra with no body (i wonder what that would look like). i really have no idea. :D

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Mistborn as a Video Game

ya definately got to get brandon involved. i get the feeling that paolini didn't have much say in the Eragon movie cause they slaughtered the story in that one. i'd hate to see that happen to mistborn.

Zane's death is his own fault.

i definately agree. but i think Vin still did find a big weakness in Atium, or rather in the way people use it against her. she found a way to duplicate her shadow and therefore gained the advantage. ham mentions that its best to surprise an atium burner. what better way then adding a second shadow when it's least expected. imo then, burning pewter and duralumin is just a waste of your pewter. i mean a thug like Ham could theoretically do the same thing that Vin did and without the advent of duralumin. so if someone else managed to figure out what Vin did, then a mistborn with Atium could be beaten by a regular misting. unless the mistborn knew of the weakness and began to be more careful when burning Atium aware that the single shadow may not be the only possibility...

lol i did notice that darxbane. and i'm going to look at mb1 to and see if i can't take notes to figure out which metals push and which pull and anything else i can find. see if i can figure out a pattern. maybe figure out which symbols on that poster are aluminum and duralumin. everyone seems to think they're the internal pair but i'm beginning to think otherwise. they both affect the metals rather than the individual. the metals would strike me as external (you do have to ingest them after all) and so the 15/16th would be internal which would fit with a metal making somebody a mistborn since that would then affect the individual and how they burn metals. which would be internal. anyways i'll see if i can come up with something when i'm done looking through the book and taking notes.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: The Comprehensive Hemalurgy Thread
« on: March 12, 2008, 04:41:09 AM »
as i've mentioned in other threads i think that Alendi is a hemallurgist. i think it would be an interesting parallel between him and Vin. from what Kwann said it seems that the piercings were a necessary part of being the Hero.

we do not know the manner in which Alendi recieved his piercing.

i think we can actually assume that they were given to him after people began to believe he was the Hero. i think it mentions them as the "piercings of the Hero" as if there were something to differentiate them from other, more mundane piercings like those of the terrisman or from any piercings that Alendi may have had before becoming the Hero. so i think Alendi's a hemallurgist. to what degree is unclear. for example Vin is certainly less hemallurgic than the inqs but i get the feeling that Alendi parallels Vin and is hemallurgic in a similar fashion.

Could the mists be Gaseous Metal???

thats a good idea but i doubt it. the mists would be extremely hot if they were full of tin and pewter and the like in gas form. it takes a lot of heat to get them to that point. however, i like the idea that they could be some kind of fourth magic system. although i think its definatley somehow connected to allomancy. i mean vin can sense the mist spirit with bronze as if its burning metals and she draws upon the mists to enhance her own allomancy. maybe its repelled by hemallurgy simply because its not allomancy. but then we don't know much about hemallurgy. it could be some kind of bastardization of allomancy and thats why it repels the mists and feruchemy doesn't. who knows, i'm just kinda thinking aloud.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Atium Mistings?

Being just an atium misting might also not be of much use.  What good is it seeing the future, if there's no way for you to stop the pewter powerd thug coming after you?  You'd be able to dodge certainly, but you woudn't be able to do anything to hurt them really, unless you were an extremely skilled fighter.  And once they corner you or your atium burns out, your toast.
atium misting, you dodge and stab the thug with your knife, having known exactly where he would be.

and then they continue standing and bash in your face before they die whenever their pewter runs out.

maybe he had groups of skaa do it and them just slaughtered them all?

that seems pretty logical to me. and for the record i don't think the lord ruler controlled them through the well. if that were the case he wouldn't have to be so picky about who he chose to become an inquisitor. we learn from Marsh's experience that they only choose the most devout and accomplished of those in the ministry.

i also seem to recall that Sazed on his trip to the conveticle of Seran sees all the bodies and some spikes and is under the impression that the inquisitors "swelled their ranks" or something along those lines. he's confused because inqs in the past have always been choosy about who they let join them. but no need to worry about that now since Ruin can apparently turn good men like Marsh into followers even if not of their own will.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Theory on why Vin is so powerful *spoilers*
« on: March 12, 2008, 03:53:35 AM »
and since Kwann was hoping for a miracle when sending Rashek to mislead or otherwise kill Alendi i think its safe to assume he had some kind of power. i mean why would a feruchemist have any problems with a regular guy or even several regular men. connect that with Alendi's ritual piercings of the Hero and i think its safe to assume he's a hemallurgist. those two pieces of information coming from the same source hardly seems like a coincidence.

the magic system is pretty complicated but the ones that are gonna be the hardest to get right are iron/steel. i definately don't think its realistic to have the player being able to control each and every single blue thread as needed. its simply too much. i think i like the idea of combining elements of oblivion/morrowind and assasins creed to try to get a good system for combat.

i'm thinking that coins would be like arrows and you can shoot coins and pick how many to shoot etc. oh and countering like you would in assasin's creed in certain situations (like a hazekiller taking a swing at you and you press x to dodge and then put a dagger in him). thats really all i've got. jumping around the city and controlling multiple objects is beyond me.  :(

lol i suppose that's true. still, i hope we learn about Zane's backstory more in HoA.  :)

thats a pretty good summary darxbane. but i think is obvious that the mist spirit inhabits the mists. but is he alone? if not is it Ruin or something(one) that we don't know about yet?

45
good point but it still doesn't answer the question of whether its a weakness of atium or just of Zane's character. maybe just a combination of both. either way i don't see a scene in mb3 where Ham beats a mistborn burning atium. in my opinion he's dead.
