Movies and TV / The Office
« on: March 25, 2005, 02:21:10 AM »
Anybody catch the Americanized version of The Office?

I sat there the whole time thinking, "This isn't as funny as the British version", and it wasn't.  But still I sat there and laughed and laughed.

Good stuff.

Books / Tandem Writing...
« on: March 23, 2005, 11:47:27 AM »
Has anybody ever tried writing a story or book with another person?  What are the benefits?  What are the challenges?  Do the two or more authors just write different chapters or the book or would the change in voice be a pain for the reader?

Anybody had any experience?

Balance them on their sides.  That is why they make them thick.

I bought one of those 'scratch repair kits', and it said that it can fix the scratches unless you can see light coming though the label.  So if the scratch was on the label side, then it was a bad thing.

This site seems to say that a CD or DVD that has read surfaces on both sides is better protected.

DVDs that have read surfaces on both sides are highly unlikely to have this problem, because the aluminized layer is well protected by being sandwiched between two thick polycarbonate layers.

And this site probably answered the question definitively, but I'm not wading in there.

I liked the Incredibles, but do have one beef.  Why doesn't  Disney put widescreen and full screen on the same disc?  They did that with TS 1 and 2.  I bought the wrong one not even thinking they wouldn't have both versions.  The back of the full screen says, "full screen for family friendly viewing".  What does that mean exactly?  Does widescreen cause familial strife?

I give negative Karma to Disney for doing that, and positive Karma to Wal-Mart for taking it back and exchanging it (I had to look all over to finally find a Widescreen.  Nobody wants the 'family friendly viewing".

Video Games / Re: Microtransactions

I read an article recently where you could set up a game (I think it was X-box) so that you just clicked a button, and it called and ordered a pizza for you.

Now if game companies would just ship their game with catheters we would be set.

Have you heard of this?  If you don't have the skills to play the game, you can buy your way to victory.

Don't quite know how I feel about this.

I'm saving the mountain poop for when the boys go to scout camp.

Well, I had to take out my reference to Mountain Dew, and every last reference to 'poop' (though how you can have a realistic book about pre-teen boys without using the word poop is beyond me), but the book has gone to the typesetter...

The only character I've got past level 3 is the mage you're given at the beginning.  He starts at level 5, and doesn't progress.

Since it's all open source, hop in, change the code, and advance to your heart's content.

No problem, let me know what you think.  I guess there are hundreds of maps, and lots of variations.  My friend showed me another open source game, but I don't recall the name of it right now.  It's more of an RPG.

This is a movie I told myself I would not miss in the theater.  Then missed it in the theater.  I know my home setup isn't going to do it justice.

No, I'm playing it on XP...  Let me find the link.

Go to

http://www.wesnoth.org/downloads

And click on the third link down.  'Wesnoth for Microsoft Windows'

Like I said, don't expect killer graphics, but I'm having a fun time.

Table-Top Games / Re: Contact Uno

This is almost one of those 'has to be played'.  I've taught maybe 10 people this, and it's fun to see the boredom in their faces (because after all, eveybody has played uno, and everybody knows the modifications), but after the second game (it always takes two), everybody is having much more fun than they expected...

The diplomacy phase always turns out to be enjoyable.

I just found and have been playing a game called "Battle for Wesnoth".  It is light on graphics, but has good game play.  Don't look for it at wal-mart, though, it's an open source game.  You can download it for free.

It's really quite fun.
