MoD, I completely agree. Not that I'm a mother, of course, but in a way, we're all mothers, as Sheri Dew said--when I tutor, when I babysit my nephew, and when I serve others, it's a completely different experience. Probably the difference between being other-oriented and self-oriented?

Hey, that's a really good point!

Personally, I think Vin is ready to give to others. She can, obviously, have a mother figure as well. That being said, EUOL's probably already got Vin taking care of Elend.

Is Mistborn YA?  That wasn't the impression I got.  What are you trying to pull here, EUOL? ;D

No, but one main character, Vin, is a teenager. He'd have to cut a *lot* for it to be YA.  ;)

I don't remember a very gorey scene. I'm thinking just number of pages. Most YA books aren't that big. Isn't it going to translate to about 350-400 pages or something?

Sorry!  I know no one said it was YA, but we're both in a writing class where we're all supposed to be writing YA novels, and here I have EUOL's workshop chapter, which I'm assuming is from the second volume of Mistborn.  So I was making fun of him.  Mostly.   ;D

Yes, I'm 'pretending' it's YA for my 518 class.  I figure I can get away with it because of Vin's age.

However, it would be way too long for a YA.  Also, I think I MIGHT want to tone down the violence a bit for a younger audience.  I realize that YA doesn't have to be 'tame.'  However, MISTBORN can get rather brutal in places.

Anyway, thank you all for your responses.  I'm still working on the plot a bit.  I'll respond to this thread with specific questions eventually.  Right now, I have to decide how much room I have for this character in the plot, then give her a personality.  After that, I can work on what I want Vin to learn from her.
