Fading Suns
« on: July 23, 2005, 07:27:04 PM »
Im always on the lookout for a good Sci-Fi RPG. Once upon a time I owned FS 1st edition, but there were issues with character creation and some of the rules.

Drive through RPG has FS 2nd edition availible for free this week. Its a better game IMHO. What make FS interesting is that it has a very Dune like atmosphere, with noble houses jockying for control against the Church and guilds as serfs starve and bleed. Its also got a better reason for sword dueling (stupid personal energy sheilds) and some other goodies.

Download it for free if you want a great free sci-fi RPG with lots of flavor.

they always have one free item advertised on the front page, but don't forget to click the "free items' link on the top left. You can get a bunch of pdfs.

There was a time when I was heavily involved in Fading Suns.  Back in the days of 1st ed I had virtually every book.  I would dream about it.  I would plan campaigns.  I loved it.

Then I only got to run one game.

Sigh.

Great game.  Great setting. If you don't pick it up for free then you're really missing out.

Fading Suns introduces a complex political and cultural situation into the sci-fi setting.
Its amazingly cool.

I like their idea of sci-fi as a passion play.

The idea is that society collapsed from a highly technical and literate second republic into a feudal society where knowlege is propritetary and power is hereditary. The Church, the Guilds and the Nobles all fight to protect their power. Many 2nd republic worlds are lost, or blockaded to prevent social taint.
The emperor has started a group of questing knights to expand the empire and give the nobles something to do.

The current emperor is very Arthurian and there are a million possabilities for the game.

Very very rich...
It on the list of games I desperately want to play in.

I downloaded it. Dune is an excellent book, and warhammer 40k is very influenced by it (along with Star Wars, Starship Troopers, and other random sci fi). Particularly the more recent canon additions, like the Navigator houses - they are, genetically, mutants. But the Imperium needs them. Very powerful, very secret, organisations that the Inquisition never really trusts.

I'll have a look and see if anyone in my rpg group knows about it. One player is a fanatic about Traveller, so I suspect he will know about it...
If you're ever in an argument and Entropy winds up looking staid and temperate in comparison, it might be time to cut your losses and start a new thread about something else :)

I understand that the creators (who are very positive in their responses to 'net-based feedback) are working on a 3rd Ed. of "Fading Suns" which will address the issues that many players have with the earlier games. Unfortunately the estimated date of publication is not until mid 2006  :(

Please excuse my intrusion.

Absolutely mate  :) Although at the time I didn't know the characters of Prez & Boss were based on an old 70s comic by DC
