Title: Batwoman
Post by: House of Mustard on May 31, 2006, 12:11:56 PM
Does comic book stuff go under the book category?

Have you guys already seen this?  I tried to find a thread for it, but maybe I missed it.

The decision to turn Kathy Kane, Batwoman's alter ego, into a buxom 5-foot-10 lesbian socialite was reached as part of DC Comics' push to diversify its characters and reinvigorate its decades-old comic book franchise.

yeah, this is the right place

I'm not sure I'm bothered. It's not like Batwoman will ever have a hugely successful title.

The whole lesbian thing will give them some shock value for the first several issues, which will pull in some horn dog fanboys. But after that... it'll be just another factoid. It's not like gay characters are new. Flash hangs out with gay ex-cons constantly.

Kathy Kane?  who the freak is that?

My favorite gay outing was Ultimate Colossus, he came out of the closet then killed him.  Way to show the world tolerance Marvel.

Is she the freaky looking one, ie dumb costume, that kind of looked like old school Scarlet Witch but grey?

I'm pretty sure her colors were red and black. A little like the sketch in that article. SHe died like, 30 years ago. Maybe it was in Crisis

edit: a quick trip to everyone's favorite wiki reveals to me that it was actually yellow and black. And that she did indeed die in the 70s. Although she was halfway retconned out and  back in after Crisis.

I can't wait until they make Dick Grayson batman, the click forums (where I useally see any comicbook stuff) have been saying it's going to happen this year.

Wait, since I'm apparently totally ignorant, where does Barbara Gordon come into the picture?

Barbara Gordon was Batgirl, now Oracle. Batwoman was a different, and far less popular, character.

The ORIGINAL Batgirl, however, was Batwoman's niece.

You mean in Ultimate X-Men? What issue was that in? I've only read up to volume 7, can't remember what issue that reaches.

That's rather surprising. That they killed him. Kind of sad.

"This is not just about having a gay character," DiDio said. "We're trying for overall diversity in the DC universe. We have strong African-American, Hispanic and Asian characters. We're trying to get a better cross-section of our readership and the world."

....I've been out of the comic book scene, the only Hispanic super hero I can think of is Speedy Gonzales, and I can't think of an Asian one.

Someone help me out here.

Some other from Marvel: (okay, some only heroes depending on how you look at things)

Hispanic
Angel Salvatore
Arana
Calypso
Firebird
La Lunatica
Magma
Saint Anna
Skin
Sunspot
Tarantula
Wraith
Victor Mancha

Asian
Arclight
Psylocke (Kwannon version)
Cerebra
Jubilee
Lady Deathstrike
Lady Lotus
Mandarin
Meanstreak
Mondo
Radioactive Man
Shang Chi
Silver Samurai
Sunpyre
Surge
Turbo
Wicked
Xi'an
Xorn
Yukio

Native American
Echo (she's actually listed as a Latin Native American)
Forge
Mirage
Shaman
Snowbird
Thunderbird
Warpath
Wyatt Wingfoot
Yukon Jack

Course it should be noted that race/ethnicity is often left ambigious with many comic characters. Some also change race through retconning (like Psylocke and my favorite is Snowbird who has blond hair and blue eyes because she's mutant Native American).

I think Echo is part native american and part hispanic, her last name is Lopez after all.

And I purposely left Jubilee off my list for ethical reasons.

Um...all hispanics are part native american. That's partly why they're considered an ethnic group, not a race. They're a sub-part of the white/caucasian race with some native american heritage that is different enough culturally to merit being distinguished.

And, I guess, listing Jubilee was just too close to breaking her role of not saying or doing anything.

No, listing Jubilee shows your hidden desire for her to say and do things.
