Because all these issues are addressed through Kitty’s unfailingly witty narrative, they seem neither forced nor trite. Vaughn doesn’t have an agenda here--she’s just telling a story, one that happens to bring up an interesting mélange of themes.
This is what makes a good book for me--a good story that makes you think, not because it's beating you over the head with an agenda, but because story is the way we explore and explain our world, and themes naturally come through as you tell interesting and engaging stories. I'll have to look it up (someday, when I get around to reading again...).
