Roomba is limited in it's utility however,  It's capacity needs to be larger.  It may work for industrial carpeting (that this stuff you see in offices) But in a pet-owining household with typical deep carpets... It fills too quick.  
This is the main complaint I hear from Roomba users.

its funny because I think the tech is almost there for a real R2 type unit. I want one to serve drinks...

I'll use my mac mini as the core of a robot i think.
If you're ever in an argument and Entropy winds up looking staid and temperate in comparison, it might be time to cut your losses and start a new thread about something else :)

Actualy, If you give it accurate home-space dimensions and know something about Bot-Pathing, Servos and other elements of Mechanical engineering....  You might be able to build a nice Household R2... But it would be limited to pre-maped environments... for now..
Self-navigation in relation to sensor input isn't really there yet.
