Title: A note on critiquing.
Post by: Renoard on February 02, 2011, 12:39:17 PM
Most of us have some background in writing or literature, while others have picked up the basics through hard work and observation. And while I don't remember anyone having too much trouble with critiquing, I thought a quick and dirty primer on the subject might be helpful. You can find a good run down of the major don'ts (not donuts) at: Critical Reason (http://grenvile.com/?p=183')

Another very helpful tool for sharpening your efforts is the run a beat sheet, or pacing chart.
This (http://nailyournovel.wordpress.com/nail-your-novel-%E2%80%93-why-writers-abandon-books-and-how-you-can-draft-fix-and-finish-with-confidence/the-beat-sheet-%E2%80%93-your-at-a-glance-revision-blueprint/) is a very helpful tool for tightening your work and deciphering those vague phrases like "punch up the drama" or "tighten your subplot".
