Does anything think that Tien's interest in rocks and ability to see the difference between rocks is unusual? Is this some special ability that only a select few people on Roshar have, or just the overworked imagination of a young boy?
If the former, is it possible that if Tien had been born in Shinovar, he could've been a stone shaman?

My take is that if Brandon mentioned it once, it would just be an addition to the character, but since he mentions it over and over again (almost every scene involving Tien mentions rocks in someway), Brandon is pointing out something other than a boyhood curiosity. I didn't make the connection between his interest and stone shaman, but it does make sense.

Yeah, I had noticed that as well. I also toyed with the notion that he had the ability to control Kal's emotions in more of a magic ability type of way.

Its unfortunate that he died, Tien could have been an interesting character to see in future books. Like if Kaladin only thought he was dead (the way Brandon explains it in the books, its quite unlikely that he will just appear later). I have a feeling we'll probably see his parents though in future books. His mom just sounds so interesting! :O

You never know, there could have been something to that whole family. Its always mentioned that Kaladin and Tiens mom was different from other women, I know, when talking and her manner, but who knows what that could have amounted to. Kaladin had something going on, enough to attract Syl to him, and Tien very well could have been related to the stone shamans of shinovar in some way.

Hopefully we may still see more of Tien in flashbacks...*fingers crossed*

Well, Brandon has mentioned that he'd like to give Kaladin a second focus book. I assume we'd see more of Tien if that comes to pass.

My crack theory is that Talenel will have a startling resemblance to Tien. Don't know why, but it's been in my head for a while that when/if Kaladin and Talenel meet, Kaladin's gonna think he's Tien.
-
I'm pretty sure the guy who shows up at the end of the book and says he is Talenel has dark skin like a Makabaki.

That's why it's a crack theory. :D
