Title: Star Trek
Post by: Fellfrosch on January 02, 2003, 07:09:33 PM
I don't mean to distract from my Bond thread, but I want to bring up another franchise discussion. Most people I've talked to were fairly disappointed with Star Trek: Nemesis, which got me thinking. What would you consider to be the top three Trek movies? And since I expect most of those lists to be the same, which would you say is the single best? Which was the worst? And don't forget to explain why, or you won't get full credit for the question.

The only Star Trek movie that was worth a damn was Wrath of Khan.  It was like an episode of the original series done with a huge budget.  it had awesome character development (Kirk realizing he is growing old), the best damned antagonist Star Trek ever had (Khan was too multi-dimensional to actually be called a villain), and the shock of watching them kill off the series most well-loved character (of course Spock popped right back up in the third film, which totally destroyed the sense of meaning of the original scene for all time).  Plus, Kirk's son turned out to be the New Wave freak from Square Pegs.  Who woulda thought it?

Wrath of Khan is probably the best movie because it delt with something directly related to the series.  It had a history that went above and beyond any of the other original series movies.

Insurrection was good, followed by first contact and then nemesis(even though i haven't seen it it sounds good)

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that those are the only three (actually two) Star Trek movies you've seen, Isimir. Am I right?

okay....  I'm a big fan of Star Trek... but really only TNG.  But I can tell you my top three Star Trek movies:
1)  First Contact - lots of suspense and jumpy scenes.  The Borg scare me  lol   :D
2)  The Voyage Home - even though I don't really care much for the original series of Star Trek, I thought this movie was HiLaRiOuS!!   ;D
3)  Nemesis - it was a pretty good movie,  :-/  though I was disappointed with how some of the scenes were cut.  They didn't really do much with how Shinzon was like, invading Deanna mind and all that...  They should have had more of that because that was kind of a major point of the story!   :P

I've never seen The Wrath of Khan...  But everyone here is saying it's really good, so I guess I'll watch it!   ;)

And I think the WORST Star Trek movie ever was "Star Trek: The Motion Picture."   :P  booooorrriinnngg  Anyone here agree??

Yes, in fact I do agree, but it's a very tough call deciding between that and #5.

By the way, everyone, this is my cousin. Welcome to the forum, trekgirl!

Sorry, I'm going to have to go with #5 as the worst Star Trek ever. It has, in my opinion, no redeeming qualities whatsoever. At least the first movie had interesting elements, and I enjoyed it to some degree.

Welcome to the Forum, Trekgirl, a.k.a. cousin of Fellfrosch.  I have to vote #5 as well.  YUCK!!!! and that is all I have to say about that.

I just dread the day when they finally decide to do a Voyager movie......

insurrections the worst. but then i havent seen either #1 or #5, so i cant say.

Trekgirl07, may i cangratulate you on your magnificently imaginative choices regarding nickname and picture. incidently in the local brit, thouragly disgusting all the happy-go-lucky mormons, by judicious use of swearwords, mentions of alchol use and teh oh-so-british habit of making snide and sarcastic comments.

welcome to the board!

(i enjoyed that. i truely am a uncultured barbarian)

I can't argue with the "uncultured barbarian" comment Entropy, but then again I hardly know you.    ;D jk.

I do agree with Slant on the whole Voyager movie thought, though.  I am really not looking forward to that at all.

By the time they come out with the first Voyager film, Jeri Tyan will be too umm... matronly for that little silver catsuit.

Wrath of Khan us undeniably the best, but I'm surprised that no one here is mentioning The Undiscovered Country.  It was certainly in the top three (or maybe it just seemed so good after #5).

i've actually seen all of them fellfrosch but the earlier ones just look so fake

Fake? I suppose that's a valid comment, but what does it say about Dr. Who? That looks horrible, but it's still some of the best doggone sci-fi ever written.

I agree with Mustard that #6 is one of the best. As I mentioned to trekgirl a few days ago on IM, I would put the top three as 2, 6, 8, in that order.

True, Fel, but Hollywood has never tried to do a lavish big-budget version of Dr. Who.  If it looked truly horrible on the big screen after a whole wad of money was shot on it, no amount of clever scripting would be able to save it.

Speaking of which, if they ever do an actual American version of DW, I'd want Jeff Goldblum as the Doctor.  Just a thought.....

They actually did an American Dr. Who, and it looked really good but was kind of stupid. I can't remember the name, but you can look it up on imdb (as far as I know, it's the most recent Who on the list).

You must be thinking about the made for TV one with Paul McGann as Doctor #8 and Eric Roberts as the master.  It was almost universally reviled by true Who fans because the Doctor (gasp) actually got to kiss a girl!  I for one thought it was kinda cool.  It was supposed to be the pilot for an American made DW tv series, but it got so much negative feedback that the series was cancelled before it even began.

Yeah, that's the one. I kind of likes it, though several things just didn't sit right (like the kissing, and the victorian Tardis). I liked the Doctor, though.

I must have missed that made for TV "version."  Perhaps I will have to see if I can acquire a copy, unless it is not recommended by those who have seen it.  Any advice would be appreciated.

My advice is to check on ebay for a copy.  It is usually readily available.  If you don't want to go that route, then haunt hobby/comic/gaming shops, especially those that feature bootleg videos made from obscure tv shows.  Bootleg video version usually goes for $10 and you might be able to get it off ebay for as low as $2 (not including shipping).  Personally I think it is worth it.  i kinda liked Eric Roberts as the Master.  He was very different than the previous incarnations:  more of a "hands-on" sociopath.  The kissing scene was fine, really.  I don't know why people were so adverse to the Doc getting one little snog after thirty years of nothing.  It wasn't like he shagged her rotton in the middle of Central Park or anything.  And I liked the Victorian look to the TARDIS.  Oh, as per most American made productions there were the requisite car chases, gun battles, lowbrow humor and big special effects scenes.

Voyage Home was the movie about the whales, right?  The Movie about the whales what ever it may be and First Contact are the best Star Trek movies.

well as im a youngster and not a massive trek fan,  im kind of limited, but wrath of khan is class, the best one ive seen, first contact has the borg so rules and finally although  nemesis was crap, it was a good film to watch and switch off to, kind of action movie type, for god sakes i took me girly with me! though only after seeing some other awful film beforehand!
