Title: Strange occurrences in Boston
Post by: stacer on September 08, 2004, 02:15:47 PM
The Ritz Camera I normally take my film to has always had quick service. Though from time to time they've had problems following directions, they've always been friendly and quick. The entire staff except one or two people was Middle Eastern of some sort, but I never really thought anything of it. It was a photo shop that did excellent work most of the time.

So I go in yesterday afternoon after work and drop off my film, and the store is all rearranged, all the staff are white Americans, and instead of promising my film by first thing in the morning like usual, they say it won't be ready till 3:30 in the afternoon next day. Hello? It's one hour service. I went back at noon to get my film, wasting part of my lunch hour, because I hadn't looked at the promised time and it's always been standard practice to be able to pick it up by lunchtime. And the guy, who is apparently the district manager, says that there were "problems" with the entire staff. "Ain't that the truth," a woman behind me in line says.

Weird. It makes me wonder if I'd been patronizing a terrorist cell that was rounded up, or if it's a matter of discrimination, or just some random thing I don't know about. At any rate, it makes me not want to go back to this Ritz, because they were rude and slow. Sure, they're in transition, but it's not looking like an improvement in circumstances.

That is...very odd.

I wonder if there was some racial discrimination there? People getting fired for no good reason? Frankly that sounds more likely than them being involved in some terrorist cell.

Yeah, that was my second guess. I mean, the entire store was changed around, and *everyone* was fired.

Hum....

That does sound odd.  Could be that a local manager was fired for nepotism or something like that, I suppose--and then all of the relatives that he or she hired were let go too.

I would think (hope!) that if it were a terrorist cell, the entire place would have been closed down and processed.
Still it's pretty weird no matter what.

It's the Ritz on Boylston by the new Old South Church, if you were wondering, Dex.

Just to play devils advocate for a moment If they had all been white and gone the next day, would terrorist cell have popped into your head?

Unlikely, but that is because in the US, slightly over 100% of terrorists are of middle eastern descent. To quote maddox.

If they were all I white, I would have probably assumed they were incompetent.  Or stealing.

It was just one of the many ideas that popped into my head--alongside a case of discrimination. I *liked* going there. They were really great, very professional, and knew what they were doing with the film. Now the service is slow and rude. It just makes me wonder what kind of thing could go wrong that they'd get rid of the entire staff. EUOL's nepotism idea seems just as possible, too.

Maddox is a guy that has a website that is really popular, who makes fun of just about everything and everyone. Some of it is funny, some of it isnt. After going once or twice you realize that he is just making fun of everyone pretty much regardless of who they are.

the store could have been hiring illegals like Wal Mart , or they could have quit en-mass to protest something (i've seen it happen)

or they could all have been killed by buttery ninja monkees.

anyway, not all US-targeting terrorists are middle eastern. McVeigh, etc.

and Maddox is misinterpreting estimates of his popularity.

I wasn't trying to assume anything about them being Middle Eastern. I was going through a list of possibilities, not in any particular order. I hope you don't think I think all terrorists are Middle Eastern or that that's the only possibility that could have happened. It was just a strange thing that happened one day.

On a lighter note, here's another strange occurrence in Boston.  :D I went to bed entirely too late last night, and realized this morning that I'd put my pajama shirt on backwards and inside out, and I never even noticed.

Yeah, well, I was also kinda thinking of where such a discussion could lead...
