Oh.....wow.

They cuffed a five-year old for throwing a fit at kindergarten? Seriously? And then sent him to a psych ward? He's five! It's what five-year-old's do....

They are insane. I feel bad for that girl, though. Sounds like she was a pretty good student, and now she's not only been traumatized for something so stupid, but she's also been suspended.

Also--and this is the student journalist side of me speaking--that article ended well. Good shocker line, as my teacher would put it. *shakes head*

Agreed, Silk. Amazon didn't play their side very strategically at all...And now they're kind of contradicting their own words, since they still haven't brought the buy buttons back, even though they pretty much said they'd give in. While Amazon had a semi-decent reason at the beginning, it's useless now. This is just pathetic.

And I don't see how going to a different publisher next time will alleviate this. I mean, once this blows over, the odds of it happening again to Macmillan are relatively slim. Right? So why switch publishers? I mean, theoretically, Amazon could do something similar for a different reason a little down the road to a different publisher, screwing over those authors. They've already shown they don't have much in the way of maturity, so I wouldn't put it past them to repeat this fiasco...

Hillary Clinton got $4-5 million advance. All she did was marry the right guy.

Um. Did you miss when she made a run for the president? And became a politician in her own right?

And I'm not sure you can say she married the "right guy." I mean, he cheated on her...and the whole country knew about it. That's not something the "right guy" would do....But at the same time, I know what you're saying--she married a guy who could advance her career, so in that sense, he was the right guy.

My boss is going in for surgery, and so she needs to train me for her shift. This means not only will I get those training hours, but I'll also be working her shift while she's recuperating. Money is finally coming my way....My bank account will soon be very happy. And I'll be able to upgrade to contacts. Even better.

Dont even get me started on Terry Badkind.  How many trees lost their lives printing that rubbish?

Haha. Precisely.

Also, I was waiting for you to come around here and see the topic of conversation. I was looking forward to your response. You didn't disappoint. :P

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Lemonbaby?

I'd recommend finishing Warbreaker and then reading Elantris, just so you can be caught up to all the normal people who only read published books. :D  Also the Alcatraz books.  Every time I read them in public I have to look around sheepishly a lot, because I keep laughing.  BYU has the only publicly available copy of Dragonsteel in existence, but Brandon is lifting large chunks out of that to use in WoK and the rest of TSA, so I'm not sure reading it is a good idea.  Didn't stop me though. :P

Hey! I am perfectly normal! I just happened to get access to Scribbler through certain methods and so I read it. It's actually the only unpublished Brandon book I've read. So...yeah. I'm not like Chris, and Mi'chelle, and those people (...however, that's not saying that I wouldn't want to be like them...because I would. :P ).

Anyway, I agree you should finish with the published books before moving on to Scribbler. And if you can get Dragonsteel, go for it. I haven't been able to yet. I tried to ILL it, but for some reason BYU-I wouldn't let me. I'm still not sure why, because I thought for sure it would be simple to ILL a book from BYU to BYU-I, but apparently I was wrong...

I just don't want anyone getting mentally hurt.

Good aspiration. :) In my experience, recommending books you enjoy doesn't hurt anyone, mentally or physically, especially when the person you're recommending the books to has asked for recommendations. If someone takes offense, that's their problem, not yours.

If she's isn't, then who is?  Kahlan is actually much better than the two others I mentioned.

I'm unfamiliar with the other two books you mentioned, although I have been meaning to read The Hunger Games. However, if Kahlan is better than those other two, I'll have to make sure not to read it when I'm in the mood for a REAL female protagonist. The Sword of Truth doesn't have those. It has Richard. Everyone else is secondary....

And Kahlan IS a love interest. Sure, she has her own adventures, but the only reason she's in the story is because she is a love interest.

Quote
just be careful next time, you don't know who on here might mistakenly take you up on your recommendations :)

Just because you really disliked a book doesn't mean everyone else dislikes it. Obviously you like The Sword of Truth. Many people on here really DON'T like it. And I'm sure the 190 people on Amazon who reviewed The Blue Sword and gave it 5 stars disagree with you....

Well, it's different than Mistborn. Scribbler is a YA steampunk, and although I'm not quite sure I'd say it's better than Mistborn, it is REALLY good. And I'm saying that just based on the version I read--which Brandon has stated has problems but that he knows what's wrong with it and how he's going to fix it. I'm sure that when it finally gets published, I will wholeheartedly agree that, yes, it is in fact better than Mistborn.

Peter, I have a question. Brandon said somewhere (I think it was on his blog, just before the Twitter and B&N Q&A's) that he would be doing a Q&A here sometime. Do you know when that will be or if he's even going to do it anymore?

Music / Re: Great bands you've never heard of
« on: January 31, 2010, 11:44:57 PM »
Lately I've been listening to a lot of a western Washington band called He is We. It's totally indie rock, but I love it. If you're into indie rock, you should check it out, because I'm terrible at describing sounds and such. Best I can do is say it's indie rock..and that it's a girl singing. But as far as describing voice quality and other such stuff...yeah. I fail at that.  :P

My favorite song by them is called 'Light a Way', with two others, 'Radio' and 'His Name' coming in a close second and third, respectively. The only problem is that they're so tiny the only place to buy their album is iTunes. And I don't like iTunes, so I don't have it. Therefore, I have to stick with the scratchy sound quality on youtube for the songs that aren't on downloadable on purevolume. It's a little disappointing, but whatever...

I know. You've defended yourself to me in the past, if I recall correctly. Which I do....And I totally understand. I'm actually the same way... I may joke about stalkerish tendencies, but a stalker is one of the last things I actually want to be.

Anyone who would recommend you the Blue Sword is looking to hurt you mentally and possibly physically.

I find it ironic that you should say that, since you recommended Wizard's First Rule. Now, while I thought WFR was a decent book, Kahlan is not that great of a fantasy female. Plus, the writing is terrible (note that this statement is not just based on WFR, because I did like that one. It's the rest of the series (at least the ones I read) that make me say this)....

Then who is the other person you were referring to?

....Well. My last comment was actually me lying. I thought for sure you'd call me on that....All the exclamation points and all. I'm not really an exclamation point kind of person....More ellipses.... :P

I meant it in total fun, though, so it's not like I was really calling you a stalker! (And this exclamation point, just so you know, is real... I'm being serious. And yes, I know after saying I'm not an exclamation point kind of person, and then putting this here could very well make you think I'm lying when I say this, but I'm really not. I'm telling the truth. Even if you think I'm lying about telling the truth about this....It's a really complicated mess I've just tangled myself up in, but....oh well. The point is, the stalker thing was a joke....And this is a very long parenthetical notation (although, this remark isn't part of the point....but I digress...from my previous digression...))

Kendra, you'd better not be looking at me as the other person.  I am not a freaking stalker!  *pout*

Uh. No! Of course I wasn't! Gosh....

Perhaps, as Chris pointed out, 'stalker' was too strong a word. I mean, being an ultra-fan doesn't necessarily equate to being a stalker....generally...

Uh. Yeah. Definitely moving there, even with the pirate-fighting ninjas. The monkeys are almost a deal-breaker, but....the top hats just aren't enough to push them over the edge. I can deal....especially when I'm getting the better end of said deal. :)
