I've thumbed through a Mary Jane Loves Spider-Man issue before, and it's not something I think a 7 year old boy would like. I also think it may come close to subject material adults don't necessarily want their 7 year old to read. NOt that it's horrible, evil stuff, just a little more mature than most 7 year old's are ready for. Indeed, I was at the store with my 7 and 5 year olds, and thought about getting it for them, and decided not to.

They ended up with Disney comics in the end. And, frankly, Donald Duck really shouldn't be ignored in terms of it's ability to get gets reading. I mean, it's not where I want my kids to end up reading, but if it keeps them reading (and, well, reading comics) then I'm all for it.

Kingdom Hearts is an excellent suggestion! (I worked on it extensively, and I can heartily recommend it to 7-year-olds.)

I would also recommend +Anima (kids with animal powers) and Et Cetera (Wild West girl gets magical gun).

We've also got several younger-skewed original books that are quite entertaining:
Peach Fuzz (a girl and her pet ferret with delusions of grandeur)
Sea Princess Azuri (mermaids)
Kat & Mouse (jr. high detectives)
Zapt! (Kid becomes an interstellar policeman)
Mail Order Ninja (kid orders ninja from...mail order catalog)
All Saiyuki fans should check out Dazzle! Emotionally wrenching action-adventure and quirky humor! (At least read chapter 6 and tell me if you're not hooked.) Volume 10 out now!

Ohh, I've read good things about Mail Order Ninja. It seems like it's a fun sort of comic. The reviewer said that the 2nd volume is much better than the first. Or something to that extent.

I...actually thought the second volume was too formulaic (yet in its fomulaicosity should appeal to kids quite well), though the ninja disco dancing was definitely a high point.

Sweet.  I was wondering when you'd swing by Ookla.  I feel that there's a good start here.  Thanks y'all a ton.

Peach Fuzz (a girl and her pet ferret with delusions of grandeur)

Does the girl have delusions of grandeur too, or just the ferret?

my understanding was the most ferrets didn't need to be delusional about their grandeur.

I'm reviving this thread because there is a new community that features webcomics that are "all-ages friendly." One that I read regularly is Astronaut Elementary, which I enjoy very much. I'll have to check out the others as well. I thought you might be interested, Skar, and anyone else who is into children's/young adult literature and/or comics.

Here's the livejournal entry where I found out about it and the link to the actual site: Lunchbox Funnies.
