So Spirited Away opens this next Friday. Disney has changed the release from "wide" to "limited." I sort of wonder what caused the change. Could it be Americas' phobia of foreign films?
-
So it appears that Spirited Away is not coming anywhere near Utah for a while. Somehow I feel slighted, especially when Hollywood is giving me stuff like "The Banger Sisters" as compensation. Actually that is more of an insult. >:(
-
I'm banking on Spirited Away at least making it to the Tower Theater in SLC. If it's going to be anywhere in Utah, it will probably be there. We'll just have to wait until the film establishes itself a little first.
-
The Sept. 20 opening for Spirited Away is VERY limited. It's going into a little wider release on the 27th, but it's still mostly limited to NY and California with a couple special screenings in other places. It should go into wide release in the first or second week of October, and then it will come here. Utah is rarely part of a limited release, so we shouldn't be surprised that we have to wait a little longer, along with the other 45 lesser states of the union.
It will be worth the wait, though - I don't doubt that. It will play SLC - probably not at the Tower, though. I'm guessing it might open at the Broadway like Mononoke did if Disney screws it up. If they do it right (and they probably won't) it's wide release will hit a wider array of theaters, including some in Utah County. Just keep your pants on - it'll come here.
-
I know it will come eventually, it just annoys me that Disney is handling the opening. They might as well do a large release this weekend when there is little to compete against rather than doing a few test runs in large cities. This is escpecially annoying since the demographics in New York and California are not necessarily the same as the rest of the country.
-
So right now on rottentomatoes.com Spirited away has 50 reviews and is at 100%. Ballistic: Ecks vs Sever has 58 reviews and is at 0%. Now which one is in wide release and is suppose to be the more entertaining movie?

you people have too many cities. and too many states for that matter. how the hell are we non yanks supposed to keep track of the damn things? jeez, some people have no consideration for others.
[nb : this was a *joke*. flame me and i will hurt you.]
[nb/nb : so was that.]
-
42 can probaly give you some statisic about the percentage of highschool students that know all 50 states and their location (it's lower than 50% I think).
-
What does 'nb' mean?
-
"Even Hell has it's Hero's..."
Even Hell has it is Hero's what?
-
So um, Spirited Away was the most lucrative film for the weekend in theaters where it played. Well, maybe not, but it did average $17.3k per the 26 theaters where is played grossing $0.4m. That is the highest theater average for last weekend.
And Sprig, yes it is lower than 50%... much lower.
-
That's great news---The Spireted away comment not the other.
-
What does 'nb' mean?
uhhhh
*waves weakly in a "go away" gesture*
"Even Hell has it's Hero's..."
Even Hell has it is Hero's what?
its, like, a quote from a film. so there. =P
the film, nb, is "the ninth gate" go watch.

Miyazaki's Spirited Away is officially opening in Salt Lake City!!!!! The Tower Theatre is going to show the movie starting October 18th!!! WHOOOOOOO-frickin'-HOOOO!!!
http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/sen/theaters.php
Notice that many states are still not listed as having opening dates for the movie. Take that New Hampshire!
-
Yay! So who's going to go? I say we carpool if possible. I'm definitely up for going opening day.
-
What times is it playing? I'm up for going but have to work that night.
-
I don't know what times it's showing. Is that something we can look up on the net?
-
I was just at the tower theater website and they have no Info at all.
-
So Spirited Away is opening tomorrow at the Jordan Commons Megaplex Theater. Showings are: (12:50, 3:40) 6:30, 9:20. Is anyone in Utah interested in forming a little group to go see it?
-
I'd really like to hit the 9:20, if anyone else would like to come. And I'm SO glad we won't have to see it at the Tower. Yay! Thanks for looking that up, 42.
-
I've already bought tickets to see it at 6:30, but don't feel like you need to watch it with me to get the full effect (although you might). And don't rip on the Tower - sure their sound system and projector are terrible, but they serve a good purpose in championing good movies that other theaters won't show. And they're a non-profit organization for crying out loud - next you'll be trashing UNICEF or the American Lung Association.
-
Now now, I wasn't ripping on the Tower. I didn't say that their existance is pointless or that I hate what the gay liberal arts-loving hippies stand for. No, I just said that I was glad I didn't have to see it there. Instead, I'll be seeing it in a theater with a good projector and a nice sound system.
What's the harm in that?
-
I cannot go tomorow unless we goto the 6:20 or EUOL talks Micah into covering for me.
-
Okay, we talked it over last night, and all of us Utahn TWGers are going to the 6:30 showing tonight. Sprig is going to take a group in his minivan, and I'll be driving up after I get off work at 5:00. Does anyone need me to pick them up?
-
Okay, Spirited Away is a very cool movie. I seriously hope it gets an oscar nod.
-
I doubt it will, but you're right, it should. It managed to be something *everyone* could enjoy, even if you don't like anime. That's quite a feat.
-
umm who's writeing the review for this?
