Big News on the Front Page! (http://www.timewastersguide.com/)
If you've been wondering why I've been so grumpy, I've been nervous and anxious. But last night everything came together! Yay us!
What do you think of this development?
-
Funny.
-
Yeah, great partnership deal, I'm glad it went through. I didn't want to say anything before this, but I signed the contracts last night, they arrived in the mail quickly.
I'm looking forward to centralising to more D&D stuff, definitly. Plus Magic the gathering. I'll start covering more of that instead of Shadowfist.
Still, I'm getting some pretty good payments in my role as "Forum Moderator/Community Builder/International Correspondant", enough to quit my helpdesk job.
Thanks guys, I'm glad you thought of this deal, and I'm glad our Wizards friends decided to go through with it.
-
Hi, this is Greg Callhan from the Wizards Journlism division.
I'd just like to say we're very pleased with the deal too. TWG is an excellent site, that we're glad to have as a part of our growing network.
You'll be seeing a bit more of me around, of course, but anyway, a toast to the long life of the partnership!
-
Does this mean we have to drop all the negative reviews of stuff we have done over the years?
-
Exuberant! Now I must go out and get myself something completely insubstantial. Fowl-Mart!
-
Is there a list of threads with other websites who are doing something like this?
(By "This" I mean, ummm, of course the buyout)
-
Welcome to the boards Greg!
As for the reviews... we haven't decided exactly what to do about that. Wizards content will be primarily strategy, tips, adventures, and new rules sorts of things. Project TW(i)G will be moving ahead quickly, since that's what I'm being paid to do now. Reviews will obviously be a conflict of interest, so we'll only review non-Wizards products. Right now, the old reviews (even the bad ones) are staying. I think there will probably be at least one meeting about it though.
-
fuzzy,
haven't seen one, but "webcomics and free stuff" is a good place for it.
I just made one (http://www.timewastersguide.com/boards/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=webcomics;action=display;num=1112363864)
-
I also must know. Each post we post from now on, is that added onto our bonus'? Or just a commision?
-
Het Greg, glad I'm up late enough to catch you.
Are we going to be seeing some reviews from you as well? Or are we happy to have you just boss us around? Good to hear from you, anyway.
-
You don't get paid at all, Gemm. Sorry, I tried, citing you as an attraction. But if I have any pull, I'll get you a little something for the Word of the Week and the polls you do.
-
Yeah, I'm pushing for freelance at six per word, but Greg wanted a flat rate per article.
The deals gone through, but there's still a bunch to be organised. Luckily, we've been doing it all through webconferencing so all of us can meet.
I should get some sleep so I can be at the one scheduled for tomorrow, anyway.
-
So is this an April Fool's Day prank? Or is this for real? Since I'm not really affiliated with TWG in any way other than posting obnoxious comments, my opinion doesn't mean much. But if this news is for real, it doesn't really excite me. When the site was just a hobby, we could kind of chat about things, spout our opinions in an open environment. But now that it is backed by a specific company, won't that mean the site will officially have a marketing agenda? You're already discussing restrictions on what can or can't be talked about.
So I guess this is good news for those of you who are financially affected by this change, I offer you a sincere congratulations. But for my own personal situation, I count this as potentially being a bad thing. I'll hold out a final judgment until I see how things start to shake out, but I remain cautiously skeptical...
-
thanks for giving us a chance n8. The restrictions ONLY extend to what content we'll be running as articles. We won't be running Wizards materials reviews because that would be a conflict of our interests as employees of Wizards.
As for the forum itself, there's two concerns. We're going to try and keep it distinct from the main Wizards boards, though i'm betting some cross registration stuff will have to be worked out. That's yet to be coded.
However, we always have the interests of our readers in mind. So the forum will always be free speech. If you don't like a Wizards product, then say why. Pointless and inflamatory speech will still be edited, obviously, but just because you have a negative opinion doesn't mean you can't say so here.
-
I want to assure everybody that we're doing our best to keep the site's feel,a nd I think we'll have WotC's support because that's largely what attracted them to us in the first place. We're a community site run by fans and frequented by fans, which means that we can discuss different topics, and in different ways, than WotC's own forums. In the end, the visible changes to the site will be:
1) All coverage will remain the same, but anything we write about WotC products will be classified as an article rather than a review.
2) Since SE, Jam and I no longer have "real" jobs to get in the way (well, Jam never had a real job before, either, but now he's getting paid), coverage will be much deeper and more frequent.
3) Since we are now subsidized by a large company, we will have more contests and product giveaways.
4) This is kind of a bummer, but part of the deal was that WotC would only take us if we got rid of Spriggan. He was very involved in the coding and administration of the old site, but the new WotC web programmers simply refused to work with him. We're sad to lose him, but we think the site will be a little better overall.
-
Well, since WotC's programmers are going to be doing the new site, I can see I'm not needed around here. Besides, I can't continue to associate with you sell-outs who would abandon my good friend Spriggan. If Spriggan goes, I go!
-
awww Tage, don't be that way.
It is unfortunate that we had to break some people off from their roles when they've contributed so much, but I think most everyone will appreciate what's happening with the site.
-
All I have to say to this is:
Screw you guys, I'm going home!
Sniff you jerks later.
-
Dude, you were so much cooler about this last night. Can't you just wish your friends good luck?
-
Well it's obvious you didn't fight to have me included, you just rolled over when the cheque came. I've been with this site longer then you, and yet I'm the first to get the boot. You had better watch your back SE or Fell will stab it like he did mine.
-
It's cool for you guys that you're getting paid. If I were in your shoes, I'd probably be excited for the same. It really does suck for Spriggan, though. . .
-
I did my best for you, Sprig, but...this is a lot of money. Would a free pack of Magic cards make you feel better?
-
Standard issue for Wizards employees is a +5 suit of Plate armor. I don't think Fell will be stabbing me anytime soon.
But seriously, sprig, we did what we could. I don't know what else to say.
-
Spriggan, I wnat you to know that everyone, including me, tried really hard to keep you on board. It just didn't work out. I could say a whole lot of things about the budgets of the Journalism and IT departments, but I don't think that will make it come across any better. We do still have a resume for you, and we'll call you if we have any openings.
-
I will never beleave someone who cannot spell "Want" correctly
-
Ok, you guys had me going there for a while. Nice April Fools joke. I thought you were serious about this whole WotC thing for a while there. But getting rid of Spriggan... no way.
-
I will never beleave someone who cannot spell "Want" correctly
There's so many funny things about that quote I can't even start.
-
Wishful thinking. ;D :P
-
Greg is the other reason that Sprig got the boot: we only really need one atrocious speller, so Spriggan was redundant.
-
/me laughs
/me then decides it's not good to laugh at your employer before you actually start work and shuts up.
-
I wished I remembered it was that day today...I was actually feeling bad about the conflict.
-
We all feel bad about the conflict, but remembering that today is "Hooray we work for Wizards" day helps alleviate the pain.
-
I don't feel bad knowing that not only will I be able to buy my new computer, I"ll be able to do it much sooner. And I'll be famous!
-
You use your Hand Crossbow !
You hit Greg_Callahan for 290 damage!
Greg_Callahan has -180 hit points left.
You win the match point!
Greg_Callahan collapses, his hitpoints depleted to -180!
You are victorious!
If it makes you feel any better, Sprig, that shot was for you.
-
/me falls on the floor laughing
Good luck to y'all! ::)
-
you killed my boss!
-
Oh well. I guess with Greg dead, we don't have a new job anymore.
It was fun while it lasted, anyway. I guess we're no longer part of Wizards, or getting paid. And I guess Spriggan can stay then.
-
And I guess Spriggan can stay then.
Good. The apocalypse needs all four riders.
To avoid confusion, I came up with this during a convo with fell.
Spriggan - War (c'mon! Don't make me explain that one)
JamPaladin - Famine (it doesn't fit so well but then it fits everyone else worse, and he is apparently really skinny...)
Gemm - Pestilence (haha! He spreads like a plague, lol)
Entropy - Death (yarr)
-
This is almost as good as the site that was "shut down" by a Manhattan Court order yesterday. Talk about your wishful thinking.
-
Bwahahahaha! This was hilarious to read! I really should have come online yesterday and checked it out. Hehe, oh, and Sprig, welcome back.
-
Ah That explains the Email I got from Wizards saying
"All your base belong to us!"
-
I'd like to report that this fooled Mustard for a minute, but fooled my Mom for a long, long time. She even called me to ask why I hadn't told her about my new job.
-
that ROCKS. I love harmless pranks that go over really, really well.
-
What we SHOULD have done is si ilar to what OCReMix did. They claimed to have merged with EA, and when everyone figured it out halfwya through the day, they admitted it but faked a cease and desist letter from EA.
-
BWAHAHAHAHAHAH
-
Yeah, I saw that. Very nice touch.
