Now we have all got Elven names
« on: March 31, 2003, 05:11:03 AM »
heh. have a look at these two links. they show how to translate real world names into Quenya.

http://www.uib.no/People/hnohf/elfnam.htm
http://www.elvish.org/elm/names.html

Read the first link first. I took the liberty of grabbing some names from the board:

CARL, CHARLES: These names are both derived from Carolus, a Latinized form of Old Norse Karl, "free man" (as opposed to a thrall). From Quenya mirima "free" (MIS) we derive Mirimon as the High-Elven equivalent. Feminine form Mirimë = Carolyn, Caroline.

Brandon supposedly means "fire-hill", Quenya Úrambo

DANIEL (m.) - Heb. 'Gof is my judge'; Eru "God"; námo "judge", thus Erunámo

ROBERT, ROBIN (m.) - Old Ger. 'fame + bright'; alcar "glory, splendour, brillance"; calima "bright", thus Alcarcalimo

JORDAN (m., f.) - Heb. 'flowing down'; *nusirila "down-flowing", thus could be Nusirilo (masc.) and Nusirile (fem.)

BENEDICT (m.) - Latin 'blessed'; laitaina "blessed", thus Laitaino/Laitainon

Many names not mentioned - no "Saint" . Also, many names not mentioned in shortened form - no "Ben"

So, heh, let the adventure group consisting of Mirimon, Úrambo, Erunámo, Alcarcalimo, Nusirilo and Laitainon set forth!

Just so you know, the letters of my elvish name, Alcarcalimo, can be rearranged to say "Oral Acclaim" or "Local Marcia."  Just so you know.

Erunamo, eh? That's kind of neat. My cousin found some site that makes up your Elvish name (kind of like those "find your Wu-Tang Clan name" sites), and it gave him Imarato. He uses it all the time, and it's all I can do not to point out that it's just "I'm a rat" with an o on the end. Poor kid.

Mine's not up there in any form, so I'll take ...

LILY (f.) - 'lily'; indil "lily", thus Indil itself

Oh, and so you don't feel left out Ben, here you go:

BENJAMIN (m.) - Heb. 'son of the right hand' and also 'son of the south'; unfortunately Quenya word for "south" hyarmen is related to hyarya "left", while Hebrew word for "right hand" is related to "south", but Hyarion (-ion "son") would be good

STACEY (m., f.) - a short form of ANASTASIA (q.v.), so perhaps Tyultare, or EUSTACE (q.v.), so perhaps Celumo

STACY (f.) - either from ANASTASIA (q.v.) or EUSTACE (q.v.)

ANASTASIA (f.) - Greek probably 'resurrected'; *ortaina "risen", thus Ortaine or lit. Greek 'ana' "up" + 'stasis' "stand": ama "up" tyulta- "stand up", hence Amatyultare

See--I told you I always wanted my name to be Anastasia. Now I have proof! Maybe that should be my pen name. A little clunky?

With a name like Lucias you don't usually find lists that include your name (which I why I go by Luke).  Imagine my surprise when I found...

LUCIUS (m.) - probably derived from Latin 'light'; cala "light", thus could be Calmo, Caldo, Calion, etc

or

LUKE (m.) - from 'of Lucania'; it might be adapted to Quenya as Lucanía, so Lucanío

I for one would like to say I am pleased to no end to finally meet someone named Lucius.  I have a stuffed bat (winged mammal, not baseball) named Lucius, who hangs from my rearview mirror, just so you know.

I think you should go by Caldo, because that means soup in Spanish.

Heh, I thought that too, Fell.

And just for the record, it's Lucias with an "A," though I'm happy to be appreciated.  My name has been conicidentally popping up all over the place of late...Doors and Windows (done way before the author met me), a Hackmaster character of my GM (also done before he met me).

Glad to see my name gaining popularity!

NATHANIEL (m.) - Heb. 'he [God] has given'; Eru "God"; *anantie or maybe *ánie "has given", thus Eru(a)ntion or Ániero ("he has given") (cf. JONATHAN)

Eruantion or Aniero. Why not?
