Brandon Sanderson / Shardplate running without gems (WoK spoilers)
« on: September 27, 2010, 02:43:50 AM »
We know that in old days, surgebinders could wear shardplates.

We know that nowadays shardplates interfere with surgebinding.

I think the glyphs on the shardplates is what allows surgebinders to use the shardplates, but I was also wondering if the shardplates can run without gems if they have the glyphs on them. Because if a surgebinder is continuously absorbing stormlight, wouldn't he then use all the stormlight from the gems that run his shardplate? That would mean that they would need to find another way to power the shardplate without stormlight infused gems.

The glyphs might be like an alternate source of power for shardplates.

Brandon Sanderson / Is stormlight sentient?? (major spoilers)
« on: September 24, 2010, 10:03:26 AM »
At first I thought stormlight was akin to the Dor, a force of nature, possibly the raw power of Adonalsium. But then I re-read this part in Chapter 45.

Quote
You want me to change? a warm voice said in her mind, distinct and different from the cold whisper she had heard earlier. It was deep and hollow and conveyed a sense of great age. It seemed to come from her hand, and she realised she was grasping something there. One of the beads.

The movement of the ocean of glass threatened to tow her down; she kicked frantically, somehow managing to stay afloat.

I've been as I am for a great long time, the warm voice said. I sleep so much. I will change. Give me what you have.

Basically, I believe that it was the stormlight that was talking to her.

I have a few theories on what it is.

Firstly, we know that stormlight only comes from high storms, and that high storms originate in one place. In that place must be some sort of sentient being that infuses highstorms with its essence (which is the stormlight). The face that Kaladin sees in the high storm, along with the mysterious voice announcing Odium's reign is probably linked with this being.

Its possible that this being is a shard. Of all the shards on Roshar, it is most likely to be the Almighty. But we know that the Almighty was killed by Odium. And since Odium splintered Aona and Skai, he probably did the same to the Almighty's shard. I think that the stormlight is a splinter of the Almighty's shard, which is why it has sentience, and that the Almighty originally resided in the place where storm start, and that is why his splinters still linger there.

(I also think Jezrien also fits into this somehow, but I don't want to overcomplicate this theory yet.)

Brandon Sanderson / Magic system based on sound waves?? (minor spoilers)
« on: September 24, 2010, 09:47:20 AM »
This is only an infant thoery, but there are a couple of references to sound waves in tWoK.

Firstly check out C12VT's post on Cymatics. http://www.timewastersguide.com/forum/index.php?topic=7857.0. Very interesting!

The world of Roshar may have been created from sound waves, or at least parts of Roshar.

Also we know that the Parshendi are connected by their song. They can hum the same tune, even when they are separated. Maybe there is some way that the sound waves connect them. These sound waves may be the difference between Parshendi and Parshmen.

I don't know if this is enough to prove a magic system. If it is, the question is, does this magic system come from the Almighty, or from another shard on Roshar? I'm pretty sure that it's not connected to any magic fuelled by Stormlight, so I am leaning towards the latter.

Brandon Sanderson / Rights For Spren!!!! (minor spoilers)
« on: September 20, 2010, 11:28:19 AM »
For years sprens have been abused, imprisoned in fabriels and overworked without pay. Recently, we have had confirmed intelligence relating to the abuse of sprens on Roshar.

Quote
The cut and type of the gem determines what kind of spren are attracted to it and can be imprisoned in it.

Action must be taken to stop the abuse of spren. This post will be devoted entirely to bringing rights for spren to Roshar.

Any theories on how spren are captured, and how they are used to function fabriels should be posted here if we are ever going to stop this. Any sightings of spren should also be posted here, along with any theories regarding the type of spren, and where they come from.

If anyone wishes to contribute ideas regarding t-shirts designs that will help spread the word about this mass abuse of rights, please post your ideas here.

However, our first mission is to choose a catchy name and slogan in order to get people interested in recruiting people to help protect the spren population.

I sincerely hope more people join me in my campaign.

Brandon Sanderson / Favourite Minor Character
« on: September 17, 2010, 01:50:03 PM »
I know that we all have favourites among the main characters. I have included in this list of main characters all those who have a PoV chapter (excluding the interludes). This includes Kaladin, Dalinar, Adolin, Shallan, Szeth (he has had enough PoV chapters to be considered a main character and Wit/Hoid (assumed awesome  ;)).

Excluding the list above, who is your favourite WoK character (spren included). For me it is Axies the Collector. Anyone who gets completely drunk just to do a bit of mythbusting has my vote. Seriously though, I hope we see more of him.

Brandon Sanderson / Theory: The Tranquiline Halls
« on: September 16, 2010, 08:08:32 AM »
We know that the Stormlight Archive is set in the cosmere, where the shards of Adonalsium exist. He know that with a shard (or at least with a combination of shards) a shardholder can create a world (like Ruin and Preservation did in mistborn). But in the WoK there is a belief that before arriving on Roshar (which was created by the Almighty) the people came from the Tranquiline Halls.

My theory is this: that whatever place existed before the shattering of Adonalsium is basically the Tranquiline Halls. We know that humans must have existed before the shattering, as those that inherited the shards are human. I have also read people's theories about how they believe that whatever world it was that Hoid and the Shardholders came from may have been destroyed by the shattering, or possibly a war between shardholders that would have inevitably followed (and i guess is still going considering Odium's actions. Considering the theology that the people were kicked out of the Tranquiline Halls by the voidbringers I am more inclined to believe that some war initiated by Odium was probably the reason for the mass exodus (and likely distruction) from the old world.

Anyway, however it happened, when the old world was destroyed, the shards separated, looking to establish their own worlds (usually in groups of two or three). Ruin and Preservation created their own humans, based on the design of the old world, while the Almighty (possibly along with cultivation) saved some humans from the old world (the Tranquiline Halls) and established on Roshar. To me this makes sense, and would be a good base to establish a whole religion around.

What are your thoughts?
