Argh, hackers
« on: January 11, 2005, 10:18:22 PM »
So...  we have 3 computers in my house. A week ago my dad recieved a obviously spam email from a neighbours email account. Within a day or so, our IP started spamming emails - 75000 apparently within the last week. My dad took out a keypress recorder when he ran spybot at the weekend, and he just tried (after our ISP told us about the email spam) to access the main account. He currently can't - invalid password - and the online only bank has no telephone centres open at this time. With quarter of a million Sterling in there (the rate is currently 1 pound for 2 dollars but its usually around the 1 pound for 1.45 dollars area) thats not exactly what he wants to hear. He says that in the morning, irregardless of whats happened to the account, hes changing banks instantly - a bank that he cannot contact is just useless.

Some people really do just need a good disemboweling. The people who did this, for example.

Well if you ever figure out that they are from hereabouts, I will be delighted to have a pleasant conversation with them. Or rearrange their face a little bit.  I have a lot of aggression, and it needs to go somewhere. :)

Here's a cultural question:

What does Sterling mean in that context?  I've always wondered.  In the US, Sterling generally refers to a type of silver.

I assumed it meant pounds, as in pounds vs. dollars.

The UK currency's official name is Pounds Sterling. Sterling is a town name, I think.

Wikipedia, hooray. Stirling in scotland. The wikipedia entry for Sterling has a ass-load of stuff in it. Turns out a few big companies use it as a name.

Sterling's a nice little place. I did a story on a company there. Plus, Sterling Castle is really cool. It'll be even better when it's completely restored. William the Bruce was the first king to rule from Sterling. Bannockburn isn't too far from there (William Wallace and all that).

Yes. I blame the codeine. And I also believe it's Stirling, not Sterling.

I think it's the "the Bruce" part that wigged me out. What does that mean?
