also, is there any other format you can export to? like a plain text? Because then we could go in an manually edit it out.

I'm at a loss to even find where the files are. And it only lets me export to Outlook Express. Which is absolutely stupid. Can I export to Outlook Express and then open the same files in Outlook?

This wouldn't be such a big deal except that I don't want to lose my saved emails. They're really important to me. Well, I do need to go through them and delete quite a few of them, but most of them are important to hang on to. Otherwise I'd just forget it and use Outlook--except for the fact that I hate Outlook and think it's a dumb program.

you can do a file search for .mail from your start menu.

you can export to Outlook Express and then Outlook can import that information.
However, once it's exported to Outlook Express, I can find the files, I think.

Hmm, maybe it only saves text attachments as .mail files, because a search turns up nothing. :P

Okay, next best thing: exporting to Outlook Express.  (I imagine this will take at least an hour, if not more.)

Argh! It won't stop crashing long enough to let it export! I'm really in a bad mood from all this. I spent MOST of my day trying to fix this yesterday. This is supposed to be my vacation.

Stacer, if you really don't want to use Outlook, try Thunderbird by Mozilla. I love their web browser Firefox. It does an admirable job of blocking popups (I never have to mess with them anymore) and I love the tab feature which allows you to have several different websites open in one window.

So is Thunderbird a mail organizer?

And I'm still having it fail on me. I think it would take less time to just dump the mail to my folders online, if I have the space, and then try to save it into a new program that way.

If you are using msn explorer as your email/web browser, then all the info that SE is looking for is at the msn server. That means as long as you sign into your hotmail/msn account from any computer, you can view your mail/ bookmarks etc. Knowing that, I do not believe it is on your end. It would be a problem with you account. Those verison guys were taking the easy way out, and trying the easiest non-solution that sounds good. I am willing to bet serious money that it would not solve your problems. So I would not reformat your drive. It has been awhile since I've used msn explorer, but if I think of anything that might help you continue using it, I'll pipe up.

ah,... so the mail is stored server side. Great. Yeah. Then  you really DO want a different mail client so you can read offline if you need to.

Try to get it exported and into Outlook express. Then you should be able to delete the trash (if not, I'll send you a file to overwrite the trash) and then to Outlook or Thunderbird or whatever you're settling on.

Well, in the first post she said it was her "hard drive trash" folder. But she also mentioned later that maybe she could shift things to her online folder if there was room.

Okay, major problems have occurred for which I could use real-time help. If anyone is online that knows how to help me with such things (SE! SE!), I'm having issues that have blown way out of proportion. Window now will no longer run, at all, unless it's in safe mode. I'm writing this from my roommate's computer, because I have no internet access on mine. The error that comes up during startup:

Quote

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_EQUAL

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop erro screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advance Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical Information:

*** STOP: 0x0000000A (0xFFFFFFE8, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0x804D917E)

I was able to back up everything today, including my MSN email stuff (and the email I was talking about was not server-side, it was on my hard drive--you can have folders in both places). So, if I do have to reformat, I can restore everything, but I really think there must be something else I can do.

If you have really backed everything up and can restore everything (including all those programs you don't have the CDs for that you were worried about) I would suggest reinstalling windows.

But if I were you I'd wait for SE before doing anything.  He knows far more about computers than I do.
