Shipping plants
« on: April 15, 2005, 01:28:04 PM »
I'm trying to figure out how to get my plants out to Seattle. I can mail or send via UPS practically everything else I need to, but the plants are a problem. I called UPS about the possibility of shipping them next-day (so they won't die in the meantime), and for 2 plants (they're big) it'd cost me something like $500. Ouch!

I've had these plants for 7 years. I don't *want* to give them up if I don't have to. Anyone have any suggestions other than driving them to Seattle myself?

find someone driving to provo, then find someone returning home to Washington.

Otherwise, you're spending cash, I thinks.

Just out of curiosity, how much will it cost to send your stuff to Washington via UPS? (Just for future reference in case I need to move cross-country).

Yes, but it's reimbursement, so I still have to figure out how to do it on my own dime. And I don't have anyone to borrow from, so I have to figure this out on my own. Most movers don't move plants anyway, unless it's a local move or will be delivered next-day.

That's the only one I found that may or may not help you out. Don't know what else to tell you aside from having them planted there in Boston.

Dunno quite yet. I'm still working on whittling it all down, and boxing it up, etc. I'll be sending most of my stuff media mail, because that'll be the cheapest.

And Wizards has arranged for storage of my stuff when it gets there, too, which is really nice. I won't have to worry about having it sit around taking up room while I look for an apartment.

If it's all right, let me know when you figure it out. It's too bad that you don't have initial money to help pay. It's nice to have it reimbursed, but that's really only helpful if you have some money (or a credit card) to cover until you get paid back. Good luck with that. Maybe you could (if you're not too attached) buy new plants when you get to Washington and have that cost reimbursed as part of moving expenses. Nurseries will usually have some older plants in pots that have grown some (esp. in Washington. Plants are big there).

I'll let you know.

Thing about the plants is, I'm pretty attached. I've nursed the fern back from near death, from when I moved out of Utah back home. Now it's two feet tall. I bought most of the plants when I first moved to Utah, in 1997. Wow, that's more than 7 years ago. I'm getting old. Anyway, the other ones are from my grandpa's funeral, so I'd like to keep them if possible. But ... like most things, if I think about it long enough, I can convince myself that I'll miss them, but I can part with them. :( I'm trying Gemm's U-Ship thing to see if anyone bites on that. Perhaps that will pan out.

So, take a week, rent a car, and drive out with your plants in the back seat.

Or just do the rational thing and leave them in Bosten, they're only plants and not worth the hassle.

Spriggan, things are not always valued according to what they are. It is certainly understandable that she would be attached to plants, especially under the circumstances.

It's understanable for her to be attached to them, but the cost far out weights any possible sentimental vaule in my opion especialy with somethat that is very easly replaceable.

Well first of all Sprig, that is why she is looking for a less expensive way to transport them. Second of all, not really easily replaceable, considering that any new plants she would get would be without the sentimental value, and not as well grown.

Weed plants are expensive you know.
