Everything Else / I have a JOB!!
« on: April 14, 2005, 01:47:59 PM »
Just got a call from Wizards. They offered me the job. And they offered me about $6000 more than I'd expected to get from a job in New York. And a signing bonus to cover relocation. You guys--this is AMAZING. I'm moving to Seattle in May.

And it helps that the team is excited to have me come work with them. They said they're really impressed with my background. And the company has some really GREAT benefits. I should be getting an official offer soon here.

It feels SO good to know what I'm doing in a couple weeks. Now all I have to do is find someone to take my apartment!

Movies and TV / Veronica Mars

Only 4 episodes left of the season. Anyone else watch this? I had to watch it for my YA class and got totally hooked. It's a UPN show, on Tuesday nights.

Writing Group / Black Bull revisioned
« on: April 06, 2005, 08:27:06 PM »
So my folklore teacher expanded the semester project to include creative projects. I'll be able to do Black Bull for it after all. What I'm going to do is to turn it into a long short story (perhaps 40 pages) for the purposes of this assignment, which will, I think, give me a better outline for finishing the story. I'm kind of following the Angela Carter model, if any of you have read any of her work. Only it will be more YA, and not include any sexual stuff the way hers does. :P

So, writing group crew, in about two weeks I should have a nice draft of it for your reading pleasure. Anyone up for a read-through and meet later this month?

Watch Bringing Up Baby on DVD (new acquisition), or be responsible and read one of the seven books I should have read by tomorrow afternoon?

Everything Else / MFA acceptance
« on: March 12, 2005, 07:41:54 PM »
A nice offset to going to the hospital this morning--I got my acceptance letter this afternoon for the dual MFA in writing for children at Simmons. I've been back and forth on whether it's a good idea for me to do this. It is a lot of money, but perhaps I can get a job that will give me tuition reimbursement. It would be good to spend some time focusing on my writing, and now would be the time to do it, while I have the opportunity and the acceptance into a program. On the other hand, if I got a good job offer, it would be good to just go with that and work on my writing on the side, because the writing has never been top priority (but it has been high priority at times, second only to editing).

Not sure what I'll do. I suppose the next month will help things sort themselves out.

Everything Else / WotC hiring Associate Editor for teen series

It's probably too early for me to be applying for actual job openings, so I figured I'd point this out to all of you just in case. I'll still send my application, but I doubt they'll be willing to wait a month and a half to two months before I'd be able to start.

Rants and Stuff / Backing up hard drive
« on: March 10, 2005, 11:11:09 AM »
So, I've been having problems with my MSN browser crashing all the time. Turns out that the email program hasn't been emptying the hard drive trash can (for the email) and has, in fact, been *duplicating* the items in the trash can, so that there are now over 14,000 messages in my trash. Which won't empty.

So, I spent most of the day yesterday re-installing MSN, and I'm still getting the problem. Spent two hours on the phone back and forth between Verizon, Toshiba, and Microsoft, and they all blame it on something that isn't them and tell me to call someone else.

Finally, the Verizon MSN expert can only tell me to completely reformat my hard drive, because it's not MSN, it's my computer.  ??? ...even though it only happens while running MSN.

I've scanned for viruses=nothing. Scanned for spyware=nothing. Multiple times.

So the only thing left, I suppose, is to give in and reformat. Which means backing up nearly 30 gig worth of data and programs, some of which I don't have the cds for anymore. Anyone have any good ideas on how to back up a hard drive besides just going through files one by one? Is there a wizard for that? Is there a way to export all the program files I need to reinstall? This is going to be a nightmare.

Movies and TV / Hero

I'm finally watching this. Wow. Beautiful. It's amazing cinematography. I love love love the use of color.

I know we discussed this sometime in years past, but I can't find it. Anyone feel like digging it up for me?  :D

Rants and Stuff / Bleh
« on: March 07, 2005, 11:32:02 AM »
I've been sick off and on since Christmastime, with about three or four weeks in Dec./Jan. being a solid case of flu/cold/bronchitis/sinus infection. It got better (didn't go away, just got better) when school started, if I remembered to take Sudafed three times a day every day, and eventually last month got to the point where I could mainly keep up with life. Good.

Now it's back, and I feel so gross today. The appointment I made with the ear, nose, and throat doctor two months ago is finally coming up this Wednesday, so at least (hopefully) I'll be able to figure out what's up, but I'm just sick of being sick.

Everything Else / Job hunt: cover letters
« on: March 02, 2005, 12:09:03 PM »
You guys have no idea how bad I am at selling myself. When it comes to anything besides writing about myself to impress a prospective employer, I'm fine. But when it comes to this, I freeze.

So, does anyone with a better ability to sell themselves (wow, that doesn't sound good, does it?) want to look at my cover letters and tell me what I'm doing wrong, maybe suggest things I should say instead? It just doesn't look right, as I have it now. It feels like it should be a whole lot simpler than it is.

Music / iPod!
« on: February 28, 2005, 08:48:17 PM »
So I know there was a thread some ways back about people's iPods, but I'm too lazy to look for it. I'm loving my cute little iPod, but I'm having trouble with the earbuds. Perhaps it's just Boston winter weather, but I've only had it a week, and I'm getting static in one side. Is this just expected quality for the earbuds, and I should replace them, or are they supposed to be really good? Should I return them and get new ones, or just buy a good pair of headphones?

Site News / TWG Utah get-together
« on: February 13, 2005, 02:21:42 AM »
So I'm back in town again next weekend. I know, the novelty is wearing off. But I present my paper Friday at 4, so whoever is available is welcome to come watch me try to act all scholarly. I was thinking, though, that perhaps right after that, or maybe at 6 that night, we might all gather for dinner, whoever's in Provo-Orem. Might be tight for Brenna, and I know some people might have to work, but what do you guys think? Either that, or Saturday evening dinner? Saturday lunch between LTUE sessions (I'm on three panels that day, so will be pretty much bound to campus during the day)?

EDIT: I take that back. I'm on a panel Friday at 5, so it'd have to be no sooner than 6-ish on Friday.

Suggestions Box / Something wrong w/ registration?
« on: February 12, 2005, 01:30:13 PM »
I told a friend about TWG and he came over and tried to register, only to get an error on the registration page. He said he came back a couple times in the last couple days, got the same error. Not sure exactly what the error was, except that it wouldn't let him registe, but thought you should know about it.
