Title: The Abridged Speculists
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on March 24, 2004, 11:29:36 PM
Writing group now has a title.

The Abridged Speculists will be reading Gemm's story for next week, assuming he passes it around.

We will also be either reading Peks Chapter 10, or The Black Bull... chapter 2. Which ever gets completed and distributed first.

MoD queried about whether we'd do outlines. I was of the opinion that outlines were ok. No one else said anything, so i'm assuming that's consent. Speak up to change your vote and tell us outlines bother you.

Uhm... That's up. To the Abridged Speculists!

I did speak up. I think outlines are fine, too. But with hopefulness that we'll also see the story eventually.

so, I know it's friday and all, and I thought i was gonna be without help meet tonight (and therefore busy with kids) but it looks like I may be able to write. Anyone gonna be online tonight to provide me with my support group?

I'll probably be on sometime after.... oh lets say, 12:30ish.

that's too late. I need earlier. Someone must surrender their social life to me.

Well, I may or may not be on between 8-9 pm. Movie starts at 10:10, so I have to leave about 9:30.

I'll be online as usual, but probably at the wrong times.

I'm sure I'll be on about 10-ish. I'm going to the temple tonight, so it just depends on how long public transportation takes to get me home. I'll try to remember to open AIM when I get on.

Well, since I've already surrendered my social life to the government tonight (my husband and I are working on taxes), I think it can be arranged. I'll try to be on by 9 ASST (Abridged Speculists Standard Time).

Thanks for the support guys. I finished the chapter and wrote over 1000 words. if I hadn't gotten so hung up over that color, I'd probably have gotten more, but that's the way I am, I guess. Thanks again!

FYI, for those who refuse to install an IRC client, the one on my friend's site works reasonably well for chatting with the Speculists

go to http://www.glug.com/chat/
change the name from ILuvBrian. Unless, of course, you DO luv brian. Feel free to use the nick. Of course, only one person at a time can do so.
Type (without quotes): "/join #speculists"
Type (without quotes): "/part #exhibit-a"
type whatever you want to say and read what we say.

chat for 4/21/04:
we'll be looking at Norroway chapter 3.
Probably reviewing the rewrites for chapters 1&2 as well
The first person who sends something out by saturday afternoon will get reviewed as well, which may be more outline for MoD or (very slight chance) Peks chapter 12.

Chapter 3 is out. I didn't send the revised versions of 1 & 2 because I'm not done w/ C 2 yet--I still need to add the scene in which the cobbler's wife comes to their booth and offers Maggie shoes.

Yay!

And hey, I just think it's cool that I get to nag. Usually I'm the one who needs nagging. Okay, I still do. But I'm doing better! I wrote over 1000 words on Monday. Granted I haven't written anything new since Monday, but I've been spending my lunch hours typing up and refining what I wrote in my writing journal on Mon. And I've been thinking about it a whole lot more, which is progress for me. And I'm about to go to lunch right now and spend another hour working on it.  :)

well, i don't think a chapter 12 by the weekend is terribly realisitic. I have very little of it written, and I just spent my lunch hour running to the post office and then stopping by Peppers (supposedly an authentic Texan BBQ place but all the employees were children of the manager, Kareem Abdul -- now I'm not saying that middle-easterners can't be American, they can and obviously are frequently, I'm just saying that's not terribly authentic traditional Texas)

Just as an update from my side of the world, my husband just got a job in CA and we will be moving on the 6th and 7th (Thursday and Friday). This means that I will definately be at the meeting this week and will probably be a the meeting next week.

After that it sort of depends on how difficult it is to set up our phone line, reinstall the modem and install NetZero. The budget doesn't allow for cable/DSL, so I'll be languishing with Saint in dial-up h--l for the next few years.

We covered Peks 12, but didn't get to Norroway 4, as SE wasn't feeling well. Sorry, MoD, but we decided to cut it short. So next week we'll do Norroway 4 instead. And we're hoping for Peks 13, or a chapter or story from someone else.

Saint, do you use the free NetZero service or the $9.95? It looks like they are only allowing 10 hours/mo for free.

Gak.
Title: Re: The Abridged Speculists
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on May 03, 2004, 04:27:22 PM
I use the 9.95. No banner ads. No matter WHAT service of theirs you use you have their stupid nav bar that takes up space on your desktop, and that bugs me a lot. You can minimize it now, but it can still affect where your other windows are. Talk about invasive.

I will probably be switching to an offer USAA has. it's a buck cheaper and probably less invasive (and also might actually let me see what connection speed I've actually made)
Title: Re: The Abridged Speculists
Post by: Mistress of Darkness on May 03, 2004, 07:54:17 PM
USAA? Is that something that I could look into, or is being a cool Easterner a prerequiste?

I'm not paying for the frustration you've been experiencing with NetZero, so I'd like to be able to look at other options. This probably means that I'm stuck with whatever the local library provides. Or Earthlink at $20/mo, which I will wait until I'm desperate to consider.

Which means that Izzy is NOT eligible to look into the offer, unless her father/mother or something is a member.

Marvel has something like it wher eyou can get spider-man email. Then I'd be jealous.

Hey all - I've been absent for awhile and I'm back.  I have read Peks (new) 9 and 10-12, and Norroway 1-4, and will be sending out comments to the respective authors.  I don't know how regular I'll be with the online chats, but I will actively respond to the material that's sent out.

If I missed something that someone would really like me to read, send it to the address listed on my profile and I'll give 'er a looksee.

I think most of my problem is that I just space things.  I was thinking, "yeah, I think I can make the chat," and then getting caught up in whatever I was doing when I return from work and realizing it around 9pm UT time.

Stacer: I do have some comments written out for BB 1-4, but I don't have an email address.  You can send me soemthing to the address on my profile and I'll reply if you'd like.

I know I've said this before, but I'm going to try and be better at remembering things.

Oh - another thing.  SE: has Peks 13 been sent out?  If it has, I've lost my copy.

Title: Re: The Abridged Speculists

Problem: it's my ward temple night this week (why do they always pick Wednesdays?). (I could just go to the temple some other day, but it's best for me to go these nights because I get a ride--1/2 hr in the car as opposed to 1 1/2 hrs on public transportation.) So I won't be home by 9. I will be home by 10 unless everyone decides to go to Amy's house for "celestial" treats. But my rides usually go home, and I've made it back in time for 10pm writing group before. Can we switch to 10? We'll only have my one piece (unless we want to go with Peks 13 too) so it shouldn't take too long. I hate to postpone this chapter any further since it's been a couple weeks already.

Or if the uncertainty of that doesn't work, you could just post your comments on this chapter on the board and we could start fresh next week.

Well, we've successfully moved. It's beautiful here, except the part about no internet. My mother and grandfather use Keyway (http://www.keyway.net). They have dialup and DSL options, and there is a $9.95/mo deal going on until the end of June for Unlimited dialup. I'm hoping to be on the internet soon, but we have to update the budget (gah! health insurance is a rip-off down here), before we can commit. Being responsible if boring.

I've still got the library, but there is no IMing at the library, which means that I'll need to post responses to submissions on the board. Stacer, are you looking for any more feedback on your latest chapter?
Title: Re: The Abridged Speculists
Post by: stacer on May 13, 2004, 10:35:35 PM
Any feedback you have would be great. It's a short chapter, so I realize there isn't much. I can start a thread for it, or you could just email me any comments you might have, which would probably be better since everyone else has already commented.

I know, I know, Chapter 5 isn't out yet. I am actually having a lot of trouble with it. I've got this one scene I feel I need, but the way it is right now is simply WRONG. It's trite and after-school special-ish. Ick. And I still need to write the scene in which she leaves home, which actually won't be too hard, I think. I just need to do it. I'll try to get it done on my lunch break or right when I get home. But that means I won't get my review done by today, SE. I will have it by Friday, though. I decided to review The Best War Ever after all, because as I was flipping through it I realized I never actually read it when I was supposed to for History 121.  :P It's a good one.

Is tonight too late for you guys to get the chapter?

Guys, I'm not going to be able to make it this week. My long-awaited chance to learn to play Settlers has arrived, and it's on Wed. night. We start at 7:30 over at his house, so there's no way I'll be home by 9, or even 10. How is MoD's internet access lately?

I'd say let's go ahead with Wed. for this week, since we haven't talked fully about changing it.

I vote for Tuesday nights at 9pm EST. That's the most free night I have now that tutoring is done.

Wednesdays are my only bad day (because my grandparents work at the temple, and so that's when my husband and I go . . .  only once a month though).

So, it sounds like Tuesday? At 9 ASST, which is now 6 MODST.

Because this is where I thought would be the best place to put it. A poem, written by me, before a class of mine. Enjoyed.

Mary has no little lamb,
She ran away with Bo (Peep).
"But don't you fret," said
Jimmy Horner, "your fleece
Is like white gold."
That little sheep, it never
Made a peep, as the
Dish ran away with
The moon.

This Tuesday, right? SE, will you have anything before then? I have half of chapter 6 done, and I've added a scene to chapter 5 I'd like feedback on, and I'll try to finish my chapter today, but I've kind of hit a block. Maybe not too much of one, but the last part of this chapter has been taking me way too long.

If not me or SE, does anyone else have something?

I'm assuming MoD will probably still be in New Mommy mode and probably not make it. Jam, are you up for Tues? SE?

I cannot this week. I have to pick family up at the airport at 6:30, then drive back down from boston. I don't expect to be home before 9ish at the earliest. Then kids to bed, wife to talk with, etc. I do have a story I can send around, though.

From Boston?? Baltimore, maybe?

I don't think we'll have enough for a meeting this week, as it might just be me and JP. But that gives me more time to get past my block.

Do send out the story for next time, SE. Next week, maybe?

Yes, I'm in New Mommy mode. I'll let you know when I figure out how to care for an infant and waste time concurrently. Until then, consider me MIA.

No time to waste for months?

Seems that a baby must be either a HUGE waste of time, or a productive use of time. It seems congratulations or exasperations are in order respectively.

...

I'm beginning to sound like Gemm.

Chapters 5 & 6 are out for next week. I know we already did 5--there's just one scene that I need feedback on. I highlighted it.

Anyone else sending out for this week?

Hey, my friend's roommate Kirk Shaw is here tonight playing Settlers and we realized that he knows half the people on the board. He's even been to TLE a few times. He's in the editing program at BYU and he's out here in Boston for an internship (he had to leave his wife in Provo   :() and he'd like to join our writer's group. I told him he's welcome to.

I directed him to the boards here to get an idea of everything, and told him to download Trillian and join us on Tuesday night. I'll send him my story to catch up on what we're up to, and I'll send his email along to the group so we can add him to the list.

He took a class with Chris, and Kristy TAed the editing class he took from Doris. He also says he slightly knows Brandon, Jeff, and thinks he may know Megan and a few others. Small world, eh?

Stacer, did you get the story I sent last night? Would you forward that to him as well?

Ok, writing groupies. JP sent out a world design writeup, and I sent out chapter 15. We also expect a new member to meet with us.

jp and I were talking yesterday, and it turns out his schedule will only accomodate a meeting time that coincides with Wednesday night in the U.S. So we should move it back. 'zat ok with everyone?

er... I forgot to send it. I have Peks chapter 1 v. 2.5 ready to send. This one incorporates changes discussed earlier and does some language correction. v.3 will be the final language touch up, so that's largely what I'll be focusing on in discussion this week, but I still want to know what you see that's wrong with more core elements of the chapter.

I'll email it as soon as I get home.

I didn't get any time to work on chapter 7--and obviously didn't find an internet connection last Wed.--so perhaps if we could brainstorm about planning for me? I plan on getting an outline together tonight, so I'll send it out if I can.

Also, Kirk won't be making it for the next 2 weeks--he'll be out of town.

I've been wondering what happened to you. New little babies take up so much time. My nephew is 3 weeks old--4 weeks now, I guess--and my sister basically just spends her time feeding him, napping when she can, and chasing my 3-year-old nephew.
Title: Re: The Abridged Speculists
Post by: Mistress of Darkness on August 07, 2004, 01:19:40 PM
Yes. I don't have a toddler, but the feeding thing didn't get off to a great start and I'm not ready to give up and go to just bottles yet. So feeding takes twice as long. Sometimes it's very hard to remember that it is worth it. Luckily, I am married and Steve is around to take a shift and let me veg. I can't imagine trying to do this alone.
Title: Re: The Abridged Speculists
Post by: stacer on August 07, 2004, 01:23:39 PM
One of the biggest blessings of this time period for my sister has been that her husband takes Abram when he gets home from work and plays with him out of the house. My sister has a hard time getting out with the new baby, though she does go lots of places--but just going outside to play is hard because she has to split her attention and hasn't been able to find her baby monitor yet. So Abram has been going stir crazy inside, and when Matt (bro-in-law) takes him bike riding along the river and things like that, it not only gets Abram out of Laura's hair, but also gets Abram out into the sun.

Argh. I meant to get the chapter done today, but I got kinda sidetracked. As in, was going to write when I got home from Shakespeare, but was kidnapped to a surprise birthday party instead.  ;D So I'll get it out by tomorrow evening.

Okay, so I don't have Chapter 7 done, and I don't know when I will. I'm stuck. Can I send you guys what I've got, and brainstorm? I've only got a couple pages, and I feel like it's not really moving along, and I don't know how to get her out where she needs to be.

So, is this week a Gemm-story/SE planning week? Just wanted to be sure.

I don't have Chapter 7. Still. It's been 2 months since I've finished a chapter. The session last week really helped get me moving again, but I'm still just plain lazy lately. I need to get back in the habit of writing a certain amount of time every single day.

We shall read Gemm and if we have time, help me plan.

And remember, through an odd chain of events, ASST time is Eastern. Take that into account westerners

It's my understanding that there will be no writer's group this week (on Sep 1). Stacy will be entertaining, I think, and I will be preparing to leave for Boston. of course, far be it from me to prevent Gemm, MoD, and JP from meeting (or any of you other dozen on the mailing list and not attending often) but it doesn't seem likely to happen. I hope to have chapter 16 ready for discussion before the 8th, so we can meet then.

Okay, let's get this out on the table: AS hasn't met in a month or more, and NaNoWriMo begins in less than a month. Are we putting the writing group on hold till after the holidays, or shall we meet for the next couple weeks till NaNoWriMo begins? I'm happy to help people brainstorm for their projects, but don't have any time to do any writing of my own, what with school.

What's everyone's thoughts on this?

I have no idea when the next chapter of TDB will be ready. but I want to outline Soldiers of the Plains before I write it, so I want a session on that. I guess we could do it tonight, theoretically. I'll be at my parents' where i get better connection. Everyone up for it?

I need to start writing again, I know, but I'm still really discouraged about this chapter of TDB. It's not going at all like I want and I never get more than a couple sentences at a time.

hey, Ent, I don't have the chat log with me. What book was that you were recommending last night? With the soldiers? I wanna swing by the library on the way home.

also, are you guys gonna be upset if I change novels? I just realized that a three protagonist novel with a plot I'm not sure about will be much harder to write 50k words on quickly than a one protagonist novel I've been thinking about for over a decade....

The books were the Gaunt's Ghost's novels, by Dan Abnett. Fell will call them fan-fiction, but they are pretty damn good, and I think they do a good job of having multiple personalities in a regiment. Ghostmaker is the best of the lot for your purposes.

Saint - I know I kind of dropped off the map with the AS, but I was just wondering if there are additional chapters of Peks that you've sent out but that I may not have received?  Last I recall is that Peks is back in his hometown and he had a confrontation of words with the two bullies.  It was a while ago so I can't remember.  Anyways, if you're still producing I'd like to keep receiving.
