And as popular as the series has been I would bet they will pick up the 5th book.  They have already invested in 4, one more is nothing (in the whole scheme of things, I realize it is a HUGE investment, but they will make it back).

My hardback cover of Name of the Wind split on me before I had even read it once.  Man, I wanted to scream at that.  Inferior binding on hardback books absolutely sucks.

Yeah, mine split on me too but it did take 3 reads to do it.

Finished American Gods about 10 minutes ago.... one word.... AWESOME!!!!

American Gods was fantastic.  Anansi boys is the follow up and it is good but not as good.

I agree with those assessments of the show.  I only watched it because everything else on was a rerun.  Anyway, here is the http://abc.go.com/watch/castle/186439/239353/vampire-weekend episode.  You only need to watch the 1st minute.

Did anyone see the 1st few minutes of ABC's Castle tonight?  I laughed for a good 5 minutes on Nathan Fillion's tongue in cheek reference to Firefly.  The episode is called Vampire Weekend and will be available to watch on hulu.com or abc.com later.

Do that many people really buy books from Walmart and other such stores, though? (I'm not criticizing you; I genuinely don't know the numbers.)

Even if they do, if the choices are between selling less books and selling a whole bunch of books at a horrendous loss, which would be the worst proposition?

Also, this is why I will never, ever buy books from Wal-mart et all.

Ah, but it isn't the publisher that is taking the loss.  Walmart is.  Walmart is still paying the publisher what they normally do they just sell the books at a lower price that is a loss to Walmart.  They figure that the other stuff you buy will make up for it.  The only groups harmed by this strategery is Walmart (for taking the loss) and other book sellers (because they will lose business due to their inability to price match).

Anyone know how much he makes when he sells a kindle/ebook version vs a dead tree version.  (Since I paid $10, and there were no real production costs past the usual copyediting, I'm hoping that he and TOR get a good portion of this.  Anyone know numbers?

Orson Scott Card has a weekly column in his local news paper and he covers it.  http://www.hatrack.com/osc/reviews/everything/2009-04-05.shtml

American Gods is a great book by the great Neil Gaiman.  His Neverwhere is even better.

Still reading Lost Symbol.  It is getting better but still feels forced, like Dan Brown was thinking the entire time, "this has to be better than DaVinci Code."

Just finished rereading WoA and decided to take a break and read something new before rereading HoA.  My wife bought me Dan Brown's new book The Lost Symbol and I am about 7 chapters in and to tell you the truth I am not that impressed.  It just feels forced to me.   Da Vinci Code was good but the 1st book Angels and Demons was the best book by him so far.  I couldn't even finish Deception Point or Digital Fortress.

Liked Furies but gave up (for now) on the 2nd book.  Some books just seem to heap on the bleakness until they are just oppressive and I find myself finding excuses to not read them.  Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy is like that for me (It eventually finish it, and liked it) as is the 2nd Furies book.  It may pick up later on but as of about half way, I put it down and haven't read any of it for about 3-4 months.

I bought both Elantris and FE because of the covers.  Amazing.  Also because of a little sticker that B&N put on them that said AUTOGRAPHED COPY.  I am a sucker for autographed first edition hardbacks.

Rants and Stuff / Re: Why "No offense"
« on: September 09, 2009, 08:58:22 AM »
Ah, but what if it is only perceived as offensive and not meant to be?  I personally think that we, as a society have developed thin skins.  We are quick to take offense and slow to forgive.

If I say something that you find offensive, let me know.  I may not have meant it to be.  If you keep it to yourself and stay offended, it is your choice, but don't come whining to me in a week saying how offended you were.  It was your choice to be offended, unless offense was intended.

Have you thought of using a rolled hem stitch?  There is even a foot that will do most of the work for you.
