Just got my wisdom teeth out yesterday. I had the whole IV thing, so I don't remember much about it. They only took out two on the top (which everyone tells me are the least likely to hurt). Yesterday afternoon I could walk around a bit, and today I feel fine, though a little tired at times. My cheeks haven't puffed up at all, I'm still waiting to see if they might later on. Mostly, I'm starving. There's very little to eat that isn't "hard."
What was everyone else's experience with having their wisdom teeth pulled? My two older brothers were very different. Ben had pizza (sort of) the same day his were pulled, and Rob was nearly comotose for about two days. Lucky, I guess I'm more like Ben than Rob.
-
I got mine pulled on the same day as my twins. It went fairly well for me, I didn't have any problems that I remember, though it was about two days before I could really eat whatever I wanted again.
Unfortunately, the doctor who performed the surgery had a heart attack that same day and died the next day.
-
I didn't have pizza the same day. A couple hours after I got my wisdom teeth out, I went with my friends to pick up a movie and got a shake. It was the next day that I went to work and had pizza. Anyway, it was pretty easy for me, so I guess I was lucky.

Navy Doctor and trainee (or vice versa), insufficent local anesthetic and some kind of forcep/pliers.
nuff said.
-
They put me completely under and took out all four at once. They were coming in completely sideways and were throwing the rest of my mouth out of alignment. It was unlikely the bottom teeth were even going to erupt at all, and now my front bottom teeth are all slightly crooked because of it.
So they put me out, and I woke up really groggy and had to have this huge icepack apparatus on my face for a day or two. I bruised slightly, but the biggest problem was that one of my sockets got infected. The doctor told me to keep it clean but never bothered to give me the syringe to do so till I came back with the infection. At least I didn't get dry socket. Mainly I just looked like a chipmunk because of the gauze in my mouth and the huge blue icepacks.

I had novoc- nova- (*McDingus does research*) NOVOCAINE (Hey! That's a brand name!) and nitrous oxide.
I remember thinking how great it is that all I had to do was lie down and open my mouth, and that got people to do work for me. ::)
It took a couple of days for me, but my first "solid" food was a Wendy's burger. That was the best tasting burger EVER!
I was a Junior in high school when it happened, but they were fully developed when they yanked them (I had all 4 done at once). My doctor said he was kinda impressed, and accused me of lying about my age (which was damn funny when one is under N2O).
Seeing others' posts here, I'm glad it went fairly well for me. My Dad had to fly to San Francisco the day after he got his yanked. I can't imagine how the pressure change felt.
Not to mention eating airline food with stitches in one's mouth. *shudder*

The day I got my wisdom teeth out I went and saw Batman Forever. I hated the movie, and Fell insisted that it was because I was so medicated. But no, I think it was because it was a crappy movie.
-
Unfortunately, the doctor who performed the surgery had a heart attack that same day and died the next day.
Why do things like this always happen around you, 42?
-
I think it was a crappy movie too.
ANyway, I was supposed to have local anesthetic. so they stuck teh needle in. I didn't feel anything. they left me alone in the room. Then the assistant came in and asked me how I felt. I still didn't feel anything, so I opened my mouth to tell her, and that's when the walls to the room started to fly away. "I feel pretty good," I said. "I think it's time to start," she said. I dunno what happened next. It may have been local anesthetic, but I fell asleep. Next thing I know, they're waking me up to tell me to go. The next think I know after that, they're waking me up to tell me to go again.
My mom led me out to the car, where I sat, perfectly still for about an hour while she got my prescription filled (no idea how long it really was, that's what it felt like) because mom said I wasn't allowed to go to sleep.
So we went home. I ate some chocolate cake and sprite (my family's catch all food, it's soft and we believe it's soothing to the tummy). I threw this up then after a bit, then went to bed.
Next day I was fine.

I don't ever have to have mine pulled. They've never come out and even if they do there's enough room for them to grow out without causeing any problems at all.
-
You know what? I have absolutely no idea.
What are wisdom teeth? I've had a brace in the past, and i eat too much sugar so i have a sizeable chunk of metal in my teeth, but afaik i've never had wisdom teeth done. I might have had a tooth pulled once... not sure.
-
Yeah, but you're from England, so it's no surprise that you're unaware of common dental procedures.
-
/me leafs through the "Big book of British Smiles" and shudders

My wisdom teeth were horrid. The top two are actually somewhere up inside my gums still, and only the bottom two ever showed up. I even had plenty of room for them in my mouth. Unfortunately, those two teeth were constantly getting cavities, and I realized that it would be cheaper just to get them pulled.
Sadly, I am resistant to the shots they gave me. I had to get stuck with the stupid needle 12 times (that's a LOT of novocaine!) and it still hurt. Also, one side was kind and took 5 minutes. The other tooth hated me and took an hour and a half. The dentist told me that it was the most difficult extraction he'd ever done, and he's been practicing dentistry for many, many years. There's still a piece of tooth in there somewhere, because it was close to a nerve, wouldn't come out, and he didn't want to paralyze my face just to get it out (which I very much appreciate).
The one side was fine the next day, but the side with the evil tooth hurt like the dickens for a week. I ate a lot of yogurt and soup.
-
I only have one wisdom tooth. It's on the top left. The other three just don't exist- x-rays say nada is there. The one I have started growing in about 2.5 years ago- I first noticed it when I was down in Orlando getting away from the Olympics.
It's all the way in now and the dentist tells me I should have it pulled, but I'm afraid of the pain, and it doesn't hurt me at all, I just have to floss a little harder.
So until it starts causing me pain or doing anything other than chewing food it's stayin'.

Well, I had all four taken out at once. One of my bottom ones hadn't broken gum yet and all of them *apparently had extremely deep roots. The somewhat braindead surgeon said that it would be extremely difficult and I *needed* to be put out. I hate being put out...
I was eating in the car on the way home, no swelling or anything. I went to a party the next day, karate after that and finally school. I had no trouble whatsoever. I think the doctor was over dramatisizing it...
-
I only had 2. Though actually right now I can't remember if it was top or bottom. I got them out AFTER my mission...they never bothered me, but I had to have some other oral surgery (removal of an odontoma that was blocking a tooth from coming down) and they suggested just doing it at the same time, and it sounded like a good idea to me. I was completely out, though I vaguely remember some tugging feeling. It took an hour longer than they said it would, and I'm pretty sure I went home and went to bed. It's kind of a blur though, really. I can't really remember -_-. I guess it wasn't a big deal or I would have.
I was happiest about getting that tooth in finally, since that started the process for the eventual removal of my braces.
-
I didnt have to have mine pulled all four grew in straight with plenty of room, although they are very sharp and pointy like the rest of my teeth. bbut when I got my braces on I ate jack in the box ultimate cheeseburger twenty minutes afterwards.
-
Pfft. Braces don't hurt.
-
when you have a british smile they do.
-
Don't hurt?! I had speghettios for two days afterwards, and chewing those hurt my teeth!
-
I've had braces on and off again four times, and out of experience I am telling you, they do not hurt. You have just been brainwashed is all...
-
four . . . times . . .
??

Long story short, my genetics suck.
They were put on when I was about 5th (?) grade. Then taken off to do some surgery, on again, off to shift the teeth with a retainer, on again (7th grade?), off because they thought they got it to the point where I didn't need them, on again because they were wrong, and off again a little more than a year ago. Now I have a retainer and I'm told I might need them again...
-
actually that sounds more like your orthodontist sucks, not your genetics.
-
No, my teeth lining is very difficult. I know it's genetics because my sister has it even worse than I do. My orthadontist is doing fine except that one time they got it wrong. But it's hard to tell because my teeth are stubborn.
-
it cant be that bad...trust, my front teeth were sideways, my canines were a quarter of a millimeter too long(_ like that long) oh and I had six extra teeth on the bottom(my adult teeth came in, then six of them fell out {with the braces on} and came in again)
-
My sister required a jaw operation including them breaking her jaw and wiring it shut for several weeks.
-
ouch...I concede, although that was you *sister* not *you*
-
I thought we were talking about that, since I said she had it worse then me. Yes, you probably had it worse then me, I concede to that.
-
cool...I guesse...well at least my wisdom teeth gave me no trouble
btw, I still have braces, appraching my sixth year
-
I had braces, minimally. During, or it was possibly after, the time I had to have a lower front tooth pulled to make room for the others. The toothologist just gave me a nic of novacaine, pulled, tugged, and pried. Then sewwed it up like I was a quilt and I went home. Never to really remember that day too well. As I now try to recall it. Got me out of school I believe.
-
I never needed braces. I'm blessed with good genes. Bless those Swedes, because it sure ain't the Scots or the Irish. They came in like all get-out, with a huge gap between the two front, and big fangs on the sides. But by the time I was in high school, they all just settled right in. Then the wisdom teeth kind of closed the gap in my two front teeth even more, doing their pushing forward thing. The only problem was they did that on the bottom, too, so now the bottom's slightly crooked.
But oh well. No braces!
-
just like two out of my three sisters(aja and zoe, but mara had to have braces)
-
I had braces because of hitting my face on a rock in the mojave desert when I was age 2, knocking out 2 baby teeth (the right front one and the one next to that) and damaging (fusing) the developing permanent teeth there. When I was about 10 my front tooth finally came in (crooked), but the one next to it never did (since it was fused above the other one). Around the same time (can't remember if it was before or after) the eyetooth on that side fell out and never grew back (because the permanent tooth was stuck).
I got braces while I was on my mission. It was the suggestion of the mission president's wife. I had never considered it before, really. And the parents probably never considered it because of the expense. My teeth never bothered me but when it was suggested to me I said "sure, why not."
This involved getting an apparatus on the roof of my mouth with a little key I had to crank a couple times a day in order to widen my upper jaw. Cranking this hurt a bit but I was eager to get it over with as quickly as I could, so I did it more often than required. It seems it worked very well. (I never considered that I might accidentally widen it too much... eh heh heh.)
So I got all my teeth all straightened, with plenty of room for that tooth to come down, but it didn't cooperate. Finally after I got home from my mission they discovered that I had an odontoma there--a buildup of tooth material in my gum there, which was keeping the other tooth from coming down. Once I had the surgery and got a post attached to my permanent tooth, they pulled that tooth down over about a week. It went very easily.
So at last I was missing only one tooth. I decided to go for a bridge instead of a post.
Oh yeah, late in high school that front tooth that came in late and crooked had to have a root canal. It was fun. Believe it or not...
-
that is a crazy story(could have used a few gunfights) ever had a toothe filed down? it is so annoying, the little whinning noise it makes, for a whole hour!! It took a friggin hour to file down each of my eight giant canines(yes I had extras) and I had to do it in two hour sessions over four days!!! it was the worst part of getting braces, I had to get them filed otherwise they would hite my braces either above or below them...
-
Ookla, I had to have that Jaw widening apparatus too, so I know what you are talking about. I forget what it is called, though...
-
it's called a pallette spreader, my sister's freind has one.
-
ah, that's right.
but it's palate...a palette spread is what happens when you go from 8 bits to 16 bits in Photoshop.
-
Okay, Ookla. THAT was funny.
10 bonus posts to gryffindor.
-
Agreed.
-
who said I was in gryffindor? 8)
-
Well, you're not Slytherin, and nobody pays any attention to the other two. They might as well not exist.
-
oh, hufflepuff will rise and destroy you all.
-
Right after they change their name to something that doesn't make them all sound like pansies.
-
Hufflepuff, isn't that the one that takes the kids who are future drug addicts...I mean those that are good at Herbology.
-
yeah, I suppose it IS hard to motivate a group like that.
-
I haven't sat down to really think about what house I'd fit best according to the classifications.
Of course, since I'm American, it would be quite odd for me to be attending magic school in England.
