Brandon Sanderson / Re: First Editions?
« on: March 18, 2010, 10:32:12 PM »
Is there a difference between "edition" and "printing"? I usually look on the inside first couple pages, before the title page, usually on the left, to find the block of teeny-tiny writing that covers the publisher info and copyright. Somewhere in there is usually little stuff like cover credit and a record of which print run that book is a part of.

-EDIT-

Never mind, I see that there IS a difference (reading is FUNdamental!) Neat, I learned a new thing today!  ;D

You're welcome! :P

I could buy that. I don't recall the description of his blade, offhand.

But like I say, does it matter if the cover isn't of a particular person or moment in the text? I'd rather it be content that fits the material without nailing down anything than to have it try and nail down something and be wrong.

Is there a reason we can't have both? From first glance it needs to be a cover that draws in the average fantasy section browser so that it gets picked up and looked at. It doesn't need to MEAN anything to them, but it does have to be interesting enough to keep their attention. But once the book has been read and enjoyed, looking back at the cover and BOOM, new understanding of the cover.

I really have NO CLUE what will be going on in this book and I like it that way. I haven't really gone looking for any information. So this cover, means very little to me, except for the storm itself. Once I read the book, i'll look back on it and hopefully go... wow, that's a greater cover then I thought.

I love the cover, that's how I'ma finish this rant. :D

If there is a long line he might personalize only 3 of your books at a time (you can go through the line again) but he will sign them all. But Brandon did a signing in Pasadena in November so many people probably got their books signed then.

For how to tell editions apart, there's a good guide here: http://www.travelinlibrarian.info/writing/editions/#prfa

Thanks for the info Peter. That link is.. confusing but.. useful. :)

Brandon Sanderson / First Editions?

How does TOR specify their first editions. I've bought all my BS HC books when they first came out and I was just curious to see what I actually have. I was considering taking them to BS's LA signing on monday.

Second question: Does BS restrict how many books one person can get signed? Might be a Peter question.

Thanks!

Whelan posted on Facebook that he goofed and made the cape the wrong color. So it is supposed to be Dalinar. But the current color works really well in the composition.

Everybody gets one I guess. Mistake that is.

It seems like a huge hassle. Authors seem to only make about $2/book for hardcover. That is a real pain to make $2.

being an author is tough...

I doubt it's so much about the $2 he makes. It's likely he does it because if somebody is more likely to buy a signed book just out of habit then that's another mouth to spread the word of BS. The more people there are the more his name gets passed around. It's the best marketing in the world, word of mouth. :)

I have met Brandons Snaderson. He gave me a copy of Elantris.

Now I love BS even more. This is why he is great, gives away his book at a seconds whim and lets everybody have a digital copy of Warbreaker on faith alone. Love it.

Amazing work. Love the wrap around. As an artist, I love seeing another artist's thought process so it's quite inspiring.

mistborn got better reviews than warbreaker on amazon. ill read warbreaker eventually. I like to rotate authors. I am read Pat Rothfuss now, then I am going to read Stephen Erickson.

If Rothfuss ever releases his sequel, i'll be a happy person. 1st person perspective for the win.

! !SPOILER WARNING! ! (i'd put it in the title for people who havent watched the new season that actually want to.)

UGH! Lost is a total rip off! They stole the story from Brandon! Boooo Lost! Yaaaaaay Brandon! :)

I can see similarities, but then again, the idea of gods fighting and using humans to get what they want is older then brandon's source. Religion discusses it, Greek gods, Roman gods. Nothing new per se. But definitely suspicious!

You also forgot one thing!

8. They both use bodies of water for "healing".

Now there is no proof that the well in Lost is a god, but when Jacob dies, it changes color and doesn't work as supposed to.

Wow, we really are a group of speculators if we first take his books and make guesses, now his KIDS! If this wasn't a fan site, we would all be stalkers.  :D

I dislike tats. My brother has a rather large shoulder piece of a cross with briers ect. probably 14 inches from top to bottom. Not too mention, tattoo's on women, at least for me, are a turn off... though i can tolerate a tramp stamp  :P.

P.S. If it doesn't look good sagging then it makes a bad tat.
I find tatoos distasteful, but I won't argue.  I'll just say that when you get old it's gonna look nasty.

If you can't be dissuaded I'd say go for the one who's power you'd want most (probably Larasium), then its alloy. (Atium, I guess?  ??? )

It's all good. Everybody has their opinion on everything right? I don't have one yet so maybe i'll dislike it AFTER I get it, I think that is a good idea. :D
