Everything Else / Re: Definition of Terms
« on: January 12, 2005, 09:06:42 PM »
I do sometimes wonder at the arrogance of the acedemic.
The Layman is the one who USES the tool!  The Acedemic should be gearing the tool toward the use of the layman
NOT telling the layman that he is misusing the tool because he is not an acedemic.

Everything Else / Definition of Terms

We were having a debate that got off- tangent in Role Playing,  So I thought we could continue it here.

The Thought Police are going to be after me for my thoughtcrime. I know it! I must hide even though Big Brother is watching me. (This is more true then you could possibly know) Since newspeak is all I pretty much have to work with and anything that might contain oldspeak is long since gone from my household, I don't have much of a choice but use a reference that the author may have been politcal/religiously motivated to write about. Since the dictionary is something we can all find and see what better reference to use to in defence of our statement then a definition I decided to use that no one else will have access to. With that being said...

I sincerely apologize for stealing the thread's main topic of in game ethics, and going deeper into what exactly constitutes terrorism.  I can get carried away with a side topic and take it to the exterme. That said if we want to continue and decided what the definition of a terrorist is and a good term for a rebel that is fighting a curropt government, then we should start a new thread. Other than that, let's carry on! Cheers mates.

My point is that one should not feel constrained by the Dictionary deffinition as even Websters can be wrong.  (in matters of Political/belief definition)
A Cat is always a Cat
but The deffinition of Terroism is a definition that is politicaly charged, has plenty of disagreement, and is at the same time, VERY important.

We need a word that defines the targeted and intentional murder of non-combatants for reasons of evoking an emotional impact that would lead to political change.
I think that rather than invent a NEW word, we pull "Terroism" away from its Thersaurus brothers and make it a Unique word that means THIS ONE THING.

Destrucition of Property, Gurellia Warfare, etc... All can be adressed by diffrent terms.

Let us make "Terroism" a specific word that means a specific thing.

and YES by wishing it we can make it so, because a guiding force in the shaping of things like definition, is USAGE.  Use the word "Terroism" as a specific term and eventualy that usage will be  recognised and applied

I will watch it for the same reason I watch Smallville
Although the story is GREATLY altered,  It's intresting to see what can be done with the same concept

I will do anything to win - cheats, hacks, trainers, exploiting bugs, taking advantage of people, etc. I used to do that a lot in counterstrike, but now I switched to RPGs after CS got boring. I will pwn j00 all!

Wow, so you have absolutly no respect for other players who share these games with you?
can I have your steam ID?

And you have no idea what an RPG is outside of the digital medium...

wow

edit: Or I just have my humor meter set too low and missed the joke

Back on topic.  Look up Thomas Aquanias and his teachings about "Just War" therory.  Compare his criteria to the revolution you are part of...

A few years back, I managed 10 pools for a Lifeguarding company.
This also meant that I was managing a staff of 20-30 Highschool student Lifeguards.

I was constantly having to "cover" for these kids... But there was a guard shortage, so I couldnt replace them very well..

I had 1 location that had 2 pools.  Only 1 was open durring the week, and the second opened over the weekend for overflow...
The guard at the full time pool was supposed to check the Chem levels of the part-time pool EVERY day so that it was in servicable condition by the weekend.

I get a call Friday morning... The pool is Green!
I head out there... Green water with floating alge, 0 Chlorine and a PH WAY out of whack...
Thank goodness  I had the "instinctive pool chemestry trait" (2 Skill Points at Level 5) I used granular chlorine, followed by Muriatic acid (To lower PH) to get that pool blue and safe-to-swim by Friday afternoon
Obviously, the guard hadn't lookeed into that pool...

Later that summer I got a call from another guard,  the pump was "making a weird noise"
After getting over the shock that this guard was ACTUALY THERE (she had attendance issues) I arrive and go to the Pump room...
In there I heard a definate "WIRR WIRR ping WIRR WIRR"
I was puzzled, and then noticed the source of the "ping"
The metal needle on the preasure gague was banging against the max-pin OVER AND OVER (this is bad)
I quickly scan the pipes and valves....
Intake open
Backwash closed
Return closed
Water was bieng forced in and couldn't get out...
<creak><BOOM>
The back of the Highrate Sand Filter Splits open and water and sand slam into me like a Firehose (Imagine getting hit head on with a firehose and sandblaster combined)
I slam the massive frankenstine style power switch off and survey the destruction (this is an older hotel and got Grandfathered on some Building codes I guess)
I see the water rushing under a metal door on the far side of the pump room... That door has a lable
ELECTRICAL CLOSET

I jump up on the steps out of ankle deep water in time to hear a POP and see the light in the room go out.

I walk back around to the pool
Guard: "look!  The water just went down in the pool!  And there is all this sand comming out of the returns! OMG What happened to YOU!?"
The front of me is covered with orange sand, micro abrasions and water...
ME: "Pools closed, go home"
Guard: "Uh, ok, will it be open tomorrow"
Me: "Doubtfull"
Guard: "ok so, will you call me when it opens?"
Me: "No, you can pick up your last check or we will mail it to you, I need to go tell the Hotel management why they have no pool and no power in their east wing... They wont want to see you when I finish, I'll lock up, you better go home now. "

Only person I have ever fired

Mr T's in Virginia Beach VA (If it still exists)
Plywood floor (Better for cleaning blood and teeth) Biker-Bar that serves amazing Burritos the size of a serving platter

Behind the Bar (You have to ask for it, and only get it if they like you) is a Carrot Juice based Hot sauce that'll make any fire-eater tear up with delight/pain yet keeps it's flavor through the heat!  (Unlike vinegar based sauces)
Burrito the size of a platter... 4 drops from the sauce... THAT IS ALL YOU DARE!

Which was very tasteless.  And was deleted.

The whole Canada thing is what gets to me. I mean, I thought they were CIVILIZED.   Then I find out I have a distant friend whose 14 year old sister is being courted by a 30 year old man and legally there's nothing they can do about it.

If by CIVILISED you mean moral,  Keep in mind that Canada is fruther along in the secular progressive movement.   We have far more in common with our neighbors to the south, I hope

Eloping was much, much, much better.

Yeah, thanks for telling your best man,  inconsiderati!.
;D

We did a 14 month engagement and planned/paid for a decent sized (120 guest) wedding ourselves.  It was easy to get over the waiting because it seemed there was always SOMETHING ELSE to do and not enough time to do it!

We also took secret Dance lessons so that we could wow all the guests at our first dance, rather than look like the notorious non-dancer I have the reputation for...

Course, got married Catholic so we HAD to have a minimum 6mo engagement while we did all the steps required.

***And also, I promise to never swear again.
***Though I modded the mod so it kept the original flavor  (Flagelates self for not minding terms)
