Reading Excuses / Re: Your Background
« on: February 27, 2011, 12:58:55 AM »
Hello, everyone.  I'm a 35 year old single man from the midwest, although I have spent most of the last decade in the Boston area.  I am trying to finish a social science PhD this year, and writing fiction in my spare time helps keep me sane.

I write mostly sword and sorcery (as opposed to high or epic fantasy), but I've also done space opera, horror, comedy, and plain old contemporary fiction.   Mostly I stick to short stories and novelas (and short plays), but I've started a couple of novels, including one I have been trying to finish off and on for the past few years.

As an undergrad, I published one of my short stories in a literary magazine, and lately I've been thinking about trying to get back into that game.  I'm hoping that this group can help me both polish my work and figure out the nuts and bolts of getting published.

I have just come across this group, and I would like to submit something.  How does it work?  What do I need to do?

Writing Group / Re: Plotting Chapter by Chapter

I think my problem is that I don't know how to tie it all up.  Writing short stories is no problem because they don't have to have a proper ending.  But I have never been able to finish a novel.  I think I have the problem that comic book writers, role-players, and the writers of Lost have-- lots of interesting hooks but no idea where this is all going to go.

Eric, could you update your bibliography-- it's in the introduction and stops at 2006.

Cows didn't design Boston roads.  Drunken Puritans designed Boston roads.  Cows would have done a much better job.

They don't update more than once or twice a week, but I love Hark, A Vagrant!  and Nedroid Picture Diary.

I saw that you're/your mixup, and then another one.  But I can't find the second one any more.  :(

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Brandon's publication schedule
« on: February 26, 2011, 10:01:19 PM »
Thanks, guys.  I feel like this is the sort of thing that he ought to keep updated on his website.  I mean, he has those progress bars and that space for Current and Upcoming Releases, but it seems like they don't get updated very often.  I shouldn't complain, because he is so much better about this than other authors, but it seems like this would not be a lot of extra work to update, say, quarterly.

I like the knives.  To me they look like obsidian, or some other kind of shiny glass.

“You must take this. They must not get it.” He seemed dazed. “Tell…tell my brother…he must find the most important words a man can say….”

Later we're told this is a quote from the Way of Kings, but we're never given the quote.

Any ideas on what they might be?

"You're right, dear."

Brandon Sanderson / Brandon's publication schedule
« on: February 26, 2011, 05:06:13 PM »
Hey, I was at Brandon's website this morning and under "Upcoming and Current Releases" he has a list of his four most recently published books, but nothing on future books.   He does show a progress bar for two unpublished books:  The Alloy of Law, and A Memory of Light.  But I know there's more in the pipeline.

He talked about this several months ago in a blog post, here: http://www.brandonsanderson.com/blog/925/Another-Long-and-Rambling-Post-on-Future-Books.  And there's some speculation about forthcoming books on a fan wiki, here: http://www.17thshard.com/wiki/Unpublished_works#Forthcoming_Novels
But there's lots more unreleased books.  For example, see this big list, here: http://www.timewastersguide.com/forum/index.php?topic=7701.0.  Anyone know what's actually coming out in the next few years?

Since I couldn't find a publication schedule, I thought I would try to make one myself.  So here is my best attempt:

 2011
:) Mistborn:  The Alloy of Law

 2012
:) Wheel of Time: A Memory of Light
 :) The Rithmatist (aka Scribbler)

 2013
 :) Stormlight 2

LATER?
 ??? Alcatraz 5
 ??? Elantris 2
 ??? Warbreaker: Nightblood
 ??? Stormlight 3+
??? a sequel trilogy to Mistborn
??? Dark One (YA dark fantasy)
 ??? Steelheart (Superhero apocalypse)
 ??? The King's Necromancer
??? The Silence Divine (Shardworld novel, standalone)
 ??? White Sand (Shardworld trilogy)
??? The Liar of Partinel (Shardworld novel, one of two)
 ??? Dragonsteel  (Major Shardworld epic)

As you can see, this is pretty sketchy.  If you have better information, please drop some knowledge on me.  HELP A BROTHER OUT.  Thanks!

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Publication schedule...
« on: July 05, 2009, 05:15:33 PM »
To update this thread, here are a couple of blog posts where Brandon has recently talked about his upcoming publication schedule:

1) the release date for A Memory of Light, part 1
http://www.brandonsanderson.com/blog/783/Reader-Mail-(Regarding-TGS-Release-Date)

2) some thoughts on other ''projects on his plate'

http://www.brandonsanderson.com/blog/784/Another-Long-Winded-Explanation-of-Various-Things

Putting this together with information on Amazon (and a grain of salt), it looks like we could have a schedule that looks something like this:

October 1, 2009 - Alcatraz versus the Knights of Crystalia

November 3, 2009 - The Gathering Storm, aka A Memory of Light, part 1

November 2010 - A Memory of Light, part 2, aka Shifting Winds

2010 - Way of Kings, book 1

November 2011 - A Memory of Light, part 3

??? - Scribbler

??? - Dark One

??? - The Liar of Partinel, aka Dragonsteel

??? - additional novels in the Warbreaker, Mistborn, and Elantris universes

Anyone else have more or better information?

Prologue, page 15 (which, oddly, is the first page): "...he could see the three guards open his large duffel and riffle [sic] through his possessions."

Should be "rifle."
