So I'm planning on making a cover image for Warbreaker. I'm still unsure on what I am actually going to do for it though. So far I am thinking of either; Vasher with his awakened clothing, something to do with Lightsong -the true hero of the story- or something a bit more abstract such as Austere's eyes with rainbow coloured irises.
What are your thoughts? What would you like to see on the cover of this great story when it is published next year?

I would like to see a young lady (or Vasher in drag) with her dress spread out on the floor, looking over her shoulder with just a hint of a colorful ribbon of breath escaping her lips. She doesn't really need to have a backdrop, so you could just leave it black but to really draw attention, maybe put a sword laying on her lap/dress. For dramatic effect, her hair could be blowing like she had a fan aimed at her.

Uhm, I think I would have to like get it made really really big and make a poster to put on my wall.

Hasn't the cover already been decided? I'm sure I saw a time lapsed video of the artist creating it. I thought it was Vivenna with some Breath coming out of her mouth, or something like that.

It would be cool to have my cover be the official one but yeah this is mostly just for a folio piece and good practice for when I finally decide to start the fantasy art book im planning on doing

Ok...terribly sorry because I know that this is borderline unforgivable to rez a thread this old...but I just had to throw in my suggestion (even if the OP or other responders don't frequent anymore).
I think the cover should have one of the massive D'Denir statues, with Vasher hidden a bit in the shadows, his awakened clothing giving the hint of being animated.
Ok, so I know its a little hard to show animation in a still-frame piece...but that is why I am an aspiring writer and not an aspiring artist, Kolo?

I love the idea that chunky suggested. I might add having a couple more of the characters doing something as well since Vasher isn't a promanant character for the first half of the book. Still, I really like the idea, and I'd love to see it done.

First of all, helping a native English speaker learn English is never ridiculous.
Second. He made a wish/request as to a word in Engish that might be used instead of the Japanese question participle "ne". I asked if "no?" would remedy his wish. I was not correcting his English, as it wasn't English to begin with. I was trying to provide an appropriate answer to his random parenthetical and if that is not good for you then *shrug* don't bother with it?

In some cases 'no?' would work. But it encompasses many phrases in English and none of them have the same exact meaning as 'ne'. It's more like expressing some minor doubt that you are correct.

I'm sure they think nothing of it if you periodically insert Japanese words into your conversation. ;)

white person saying anything randomly in japanese = total nerd and a lot of people might consider them racist.
I'd go with eh, if I were you, la. :)

Actually my friends and I tend to randomly insert Japanese words into our English all the time. I guess that's PROBABLY why I say ne a lot. Actually we speak mostly Japanese with random English words if truth be told. So yeah, ha ha.

No. No. No. No. Those are "letters" just the same as A, B, C or D.
If, on the other hand, you started typing kanji-- 日本-- they would be "characters".

Glyph is fine. A B C いだほ 日本 are all glyphs. It's incorrect to call いだほ letters, because hiragana is a moraic writing system: each symbol encodes for a vowel and a length and a consonant (or the lack thereof...plus ん encodes for length and consonant with no vowel). Letters encode only for vowel or consonant, not both, and length is usually not included unless there's a diacritic.

Basically. Glyphs can be any kind of symbol that conveys information nonverbally. Even the patterns of signal flags used on sailing ships could be called glyphs.
But calling all of them characters isn't wrong either. Glyphs can be thought of as examples of characters.

huh. That's interesting.
Is the Korean system considered moraic? It seems so according to what you noted earlier. These are the things that aren't put in the $20 language books at the JC level. :D
Though if you can consider hiragana and kanji both glyphs, and glyphs can be considered characters, then why call the Chinese system (and thus kanji) "character writing" and not "glyph writing"?

Korean is alphabetic, but the letters are stacked into syllables instead of being next to each other. I think it's an elegant solution, myself.
Japanese is the only common moraic writing system that I know about. A lot of people might call it syllabic rather than moraic, but you have to keep in mind that while konbanwa looks like 3 syllables it uses 5 morae: ko n ba n wa.

I believe that Amharic is also syllabic - not that I know anything about it beyond what an Ethiopian friend told me when she gave me a mug with several rows and columns of cool-looking characters. That's my favorite mug - gives me the deceptive impression that I'm a linguist. :)

ha! I must not have been fully awake when I thought Korean as anything other than alphabetic.

All of my Asian-language professors (Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese & Korean). All of my Asian friends (My Chinese friends often compliment me on my "good characters"). All of the books I own concerning Chinese (my Mandarin textbooks, my Cantonese textbooks, as well as two dictionaries for Mandarin. Oh, and my Vietnamese/Korean texts in the 'history of the language' section) and just about every internet site I've gone to in order to translate.

Books like Mistborn appeal to a large group of people. It just so happens there is a cross-section of Japanese otaku in the same interest circle.
Korean? No way I could fathom why so many...
Mandarin? Beijing Olympics 2008 might be a clue. :D

I went Spanish-speaking to East LA, but my sister went to Korea and I took three semesters of Korean for my Linguistics major. My Japanese interest was due to manga, which is also why I went there to teach English for half a year (and had four hours of Japanese class per week).
