Title: A question of eyes for Dr. P
Post by: Gemm: Rock & Roll Star; Born to Rock on August 01, 2006, 05:16:49 PM
Hey Dr. P I have some optrician questions for you.

What, on the prescription form, do OD and OS mean? As well, what are the Sphere, Cylinder, Axis, ADD, and Prism?

Thanks.

(Optometrist actually)

OD - Right Eye
OS - Left Eye

Sphere - correction for nearsightedness (-) and farsightedness (+)

Cylinder and Axis - the amount of astigmatism correction and where it is placed at.

Add - power in a bifocal

Prism - any prismatic power to help folk with double vision or convergence/divergence issues.

Cool. So what does it mean if you're -6 in both eyes (I think that's what it is)? I have no idea how that translates to what I've always thought in up till recent years when the language changed on me, the 20/20 terminology.

And this reminds me that I need to find an eye doctor. We get one free eye exam a year and one free pair of lenses (not frames), so I really need to take advantage of it. I missed it last year and should have used it. I think my glasses are going funky on me. I've had an eye twitch for about a month, and I think it's from fatigue with all the reading I do at work, and I've probably fatigued my way into a worse prescription.

Well, it would seem I was right then, my right eye is stronger than my left. With a OD Sphere of -4.50 and Cylinder +0.50 and Axis of x065, compared to my left OS Sphere of -5.75, Cylinder +1.50, and Axis of x077.

Wow, this prescription makes a bunch of sense now. Huzzah and thanks Dr. P! You eye knowledge is excellent!

And mine is pretty cool now too. =P

Hey, that's what I am, too!  As far as I know it just means you're really really nearsighted, which I already knew.
