I talked to my boss about working from home once my maternity leave is over, and not only did he say that that was okay, he's going to get me a laptop to use when I work from home too! This is great because we only have one computer and it's been really annoying when both my husband and I need a computer to use. And I didn't think he would get me a laptop because of the cost, so I wasn't even going to ask, but he volunteered that he would! Yay!

Brandon Sanderson / Re: How did you find out about Brandon Sanderson?
« on: December 12, 2007, 05:17:57 PM »
I remember him being  a guy in my Sci-fi and Fantasy lit class trying to get people to go to a con (I think world con) in California to share costs of travel and hotel rooms. Then, when I was working at Leading Edge, I found out he had had a book published, Elantris, so I read it and was very impressed. I was an editor for the 50th issue of Leading Edge and asked Brandon to write a short story for it (which was very good and I recommend to anyone).

Well, along with Lost's news, I'd like to announce that my husband and I will have a tiny visitor come around March 2, 2008. We don't know yet if it's a boy or girl. We'll find out next month! We're definitely excited (and I'm excited that I had a lack of morning sickness the first trimester. So double happy things). I have a picture of the ultrasound on my blog for anyone interested. The address is jillenabean.livejournal.com.

I got the impression that it was sort of an alternate history where the technology went a different direction (i.e. springwork rather than steam and then oil), although I think that could be clarified.

Okay, so I had no idea that we worked for the same company. How funny!

Yeah, I feel the same. I was really shocked when I got to work yesterday and found out.

PS Where at Altiris do you work?

NM: Found you in the address book.

Everything Else / Re: Checking in on Leading Edge

Well, I can't help answer the question about the Web site (although I emailed one of the editors to find out), since I'm no longer a staff member (ending after this latest issue), but MsFish, if you want to have your rumors substantiated, you can email me. PM me if you no longer have my email address.

EDIT: Got response back from one of the editors. He said they're changing servers and the site should be up by the end of the week.

I'm willing and able. Still gotta read the first, but shouldn't take me long then I can read the second and give you comments.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: EMAIL OUT
« on: September 28, 2006, 12:24:19 PM »
What about if we sent you an email like a month and a half ago, and you never responded?

This mostly had to do with setting up a book signing for you at TLE. We have quite a few staff members now that fall semester has started and if we set up a definite date and time (i.e. knew for sure you would come), then I would be willing to totally promote it by bringing my own copies of your books to meetings prior to the book signing and inviting people to read some so they could decide whether to buy a copy for themselves or not. So if that is of interest to you, then let me know. The sooner the better because I'd like to give staff members plenty of time to get a copy if they want.

Also, I don't believe we have a contract from you for the nonfiction piece and although I trust you, I still think we should have one.

The issue should be out in the next few weeks, so if you wanted your signing to coincide with the release party, you'd be welcome to do that. Then we could just give you your copies at the same time. Or whatever. Just let me know.

Everything Else / Re: Proposals to Bookstores

So I have another question. Covenant wants either an ISBN or UPC for us to sell through them.

Anyway, that reminded me of how previous staff members (some who may be here) tried to get an ISBN by changing the magazine to an anthology and I can't remember all the details of what they tried and why it didn't work out. That way, we don't have to go through that all over again--we'll know why it didn't work and what other avenues haven't been tried. Thanks.

We've already talked to people at different bookstores and they said to draft a proposal and present it, so we're just wondering what we should include.

Diamante, help! Do you have any ideas of what should be in the proposal?

Everything Else / Proposals to Bookstores

So one of the other editors at TLE contacted some bookstores about selling the mag in their stores. Many seem interested, but want a proposal. We really don't want to come off as unprofessional, but we don't know what should be in such a proposal. We're going to do some research to figure this out (by talking with Mel Thorne and the BYU Bookstore and whatnot), but if any of you (*Jelly turns to Stacer) have any thoughts or knowledge on the subject, we could really use your help.

I know Stacer used to work at a bookstore (Barnes and Noble, was it?). But anyone who knows what would go in a good proposal, we could really use your advice.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Mistborn Out!
« on: August 04, 2006, 12:24:23 PM »
I finally got my copy in the mail yesterday. It was so exciting to see my name on the acknowledgements page (not that many read that page, but I can still show it to everyone). Yeah!!!

Now I just need to get it signed. I guess I can go to a signing, unless I can convince Brandon to come by TLE. It might help promote his book, esp. if he comes by after fall semester starts!

Hint, hint.
