Someone said Madjius was deleted already.

Looks to me like he's reincarnated as NordlandDrake.

Rumor has it that here in Kansas, one of the Supreme Court justices actually got seated on a jury.  (I'm not sure why, since if that case got appealed, she'd have to recuse herself.)  But I sure would hate to be one of the lawyers arguing that case - or, for that matter, the presiding judge.  I'd definitely want to brush up on the rules of evidence ahead of time.

Congratulations, Ookla!

What this actually will mean is maddeningly cryptic hints throughout the actual books, not just on the forum ahead of time.

That's really funny.  I was hoping to hear about at least one good April Fool's joke today (since I'm not feeling creative enough to come up with one of my own).

I'm going to Chicago this weekend - round trip from Kansas City for $17 (I love Megabus!).  The purpose of the trip is to see some friends and have a fun time before becoming a responsible, self-sacrificing mother next month.  I'm excited!

I haven't researched this particular idea, but in general it seems to me that when you consider the environmental impact of an alternative fuel, it's essential to take into account the production of that fuel as well as its combustion byproducts.

So I would want to know how exactly the air gets compressed, and what's the environmental impact of that process?

On the Faile vs. Berelain, I'm completely on Faile's side.  Berelain knows perfectly well that Perrin isn't interested in her, that he loves Faile and is committed to her, but she keeps intentionally getting him in trouble with Faile and trying to threaten their relationship.  What is she even hoping to accomplish?  She knows Perrin won't choose her, all I can see is she's trying to make his life difficult - and usually succeeding.

I can see why people get frustrated with Faile for expecting Perrin to read her mind, and for not trusting him, but I find her a much more likeable as well as respectable character.

I don't quite see how Berelain and Mat are alike, other than their self-centeredness and love of luxury.  It's not like Mat goes around seducing people for his own devious Machiavellian purposes.

I'm guessing that the first book will end after resolving the White Tower situation (i.e. the Tower will be made whole again with Egwene as Amyrlin.) This is something that needs to happen before the Last Battle and it seems like it is the situation most ready to be resolved.

Hmm, I don't know.  I mean, you're right that Egwene seems close to victory there, but we have to remember the Seanchan attack that she dreamed about.  Perhaps that will occur after she regains the stole, though, so you could still be right.

It seems to me that a lot of the fan anger is due to Robert Jordan's broken promise.  That promise has turned out to be essentially un-fulfillable, even (as Tom and Harriet have both said) if he had lived to attempt to fulfill it himself.

I remember when he first announced his illness, that at that time he basically promised his fans that he wouldn't die before finishing the writing he had planned.  His estimate at that time was that the stories he wanted to tell would take another 30 years, so he intended to live that long at the very least.

If he'd been able to keep this second promise, then he would be around to take the flak for the breaking of the first promise, which in my opinion would be right and fair.  Robert Jordan, not Tor or Harriet or Brandon Sanderson or the bookstores, deserves the blame for this situation.  But fans cannot admit that they are angry at their favorite author who's lost his courageous battle to a terrible disease.  So they transfer that anger to others, who didn't make the rash, stupid promise that is now being broken.

I always think it's a bad idea to make promises that are not in your power to keep - promises of outcomes over which the person making the promise has limited control.

I commend Tor, Harriet, and especially Sanderson for their excellent handling of this whole situation which, in my view, was not their fault in the first place.  It seems to me that they've made the best decisions they could with the cards they were dealt.  I'm confident that they'll continue to work towards getting the best book they can out, as quickly as is practical.  But I seriously hope that Sanderson especially will not sacrifice his marriage, his family life, his health and sanity, or his own writing in an effort to assuage the wrath of the Jordan fans.

The country's steadily growing anathema for successful people is dangerous, and resorts to simple jealousy more than anything else.

I like this phrase.  It reminds me of people who refuse to eat or shop at "chains" - don't they understand that chains are simply local businesses that have done enough things right to be able to expand and reproduce?

I suspect sarah is female :P

Oh, no, my secret is out!  (What was your first clue?)   ;)

Sarcasm aside, thanks for the defense, Cosmic.  As you said, I was just trying to help Kaz get acquainted with forum culture.

I agree with Bookstore Guy.  The books make the most sense in publication order rather than chronological.

For the same reason, I get mad when I see boxed sets of The Chronicles of Narnia with Magician's Nephew as #1.

heavy philosophical undertones
I tried explaining that to someone at work the other day and using the lack of it as one of the reasons I dislike the Twilight series.  She was like. . . . urhm, what're you talking about. ha ha.

I actually think the Twilight series does have some interesting philosophy in it.  I especially appreciated the overarching sexual metaphor of the vampire world.

Of course I realize that admitting I found some value in Twilight essentially relinquishes my claim to any particle of intellectual or literary sophistication.  Most of you will now lose whatever little respect for me you may once have had.   ;)

I love both rain and snow.  Rain, because I grew up in Africa where we had awesome tropical thunderstorms all the time - it's one of the things I miss most.  Snow, because I grew up in Africa and snow still seems like a novelty and a wonder to me, even when I have to shovel it.  I do wish we could do without the ice and cold temperatures, though.

I also love skies.  I have never seen an ugly sky.  Even the plain gray ones have their own strange sort of beauty.
