Brandon Sanderson / Re: More Art for You to Digest
« on: November 09, 2007, 10:54:04 PM »
I've read part of it before I lost track of where I was reading when I missed a few chapters while computerless for awhile.

1) her arms seems disproportionately long for her body and it bothers me.

2) if you didn't know the story at first glance it looks like the brightly colored swirl is coming from her hair instead of her mouth.

3) if you do know the story you wonder why her mouth is not open

4) I liked the lettering of the title except for the fact that the W is duplicated.  Some people might think of the title as "W. warbreaker"

5) I wonder if guys would be turned off a bit to picking it up because the cover might look like "a girl's fantasy story".  I've know guys who do that.  They also refuse to read anything with dragons because they think those are fantasy stories "just for girls".

6) I miss the depth of field in the art that's been on your other covers.  I kind of wanted something in the background to add to it? set context? I don't know.

7) seeing this image after reading a part of it I can see how it fits in with the story (and also helps to bring back the story since it's been awhile)

8) I like to see a little bit more blood on the blade

$.02 given (for what it's worth)

Writing Group / Re: NaNoWriMo 2007
« on: November 08, 2007, 06:27:06 PM »
I've had a mixed experience with NaNoWriMo the last couple of years.  In 2005 I tried it (unofficially since I didn't sign up).  About 1.5 weeks into it I was way behind on my word count so I indulged a bit.  After realizing I was spending 3 very long paragraphs to describe the exact color or gray of the stones along a path I couldn't take it any more.  I didn't want to write words now that I knew I was going to have to take out later.

In 2006 I had had eye surgery in October and I thought I would be fine so I signed up (official this time) and started writing.  I was doing well and keeping everything under control and not too many excessive descriptions.  But after 2 weeks my eyes couldn't take it any more because they hurt so bad.  I decided to take a break for a day or two.  That turned into a week and then I just couldn't get back in the flow of it.  I think ended up with about 19,000-20,000 words.

This year my whole family knows about it and they have been encouraging me to give it a try.  I didn't know if I had it in me this year . . . but I'm doing it anyway.  My eyes are fine and family will support me so why not?
I'm a little slow starting but I'm not worried . . . yet.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: New MB 1?

If they do offer the cheaper book I hope they don't print the cheap price on the cover.  I bought a paperback like that once and I hated the fact that $4.99 was printed in big letter on the top corner of the book.  They also printed a line about a new book coming out by the same author (kind of like what you're going through).  I didn't like it because half the cover hwas covered but by all the writing and I couldn't see the beautiful art work beneath it.  A couple of years later the same book came out (same cover) at full price without all that writing and I bought it again.  I donated the other book to DI.  I wouldn't have minded if they put a sticker on the cover that I could take off but all that "special" pricing and writing was too much.

I had to replace my router recently as well.  :-[  Just after I got the Red Ring of Death on Xbox 360.  Don't know if that contributed or not.

Lord of Chaos (Book 6 of Wheel ot Time series) by Robert Jordan

I'm rereading them all before I start Knife of Dreams (yes, I'm behind in the series).  Lord of Chaos is my least favorite one in the series but I'm finding it so much more enjoyable now that I realize it's his writing and that someone else is going to have to finish the series.  I guess I'm just enjoying it while I can.  Hopefully whoever ends the series will be just as entertaining and engaging.  (And no I'm not going to get into the debate about the value of RJ's writings.)

Books / Re: So, apparently Dumbledore is gay.

There is one thing I don't like about this annoucement.  I don't like the fact that when children reread the books (and you know they will) they will be looking at Dumbledore's and Harry's relationship differently . . . and possibily suspiciously.  This might effect some of that "magic moment" they first had when reading the series.  I don't have a problem reading about a character who is gay but as an author don't decide (or announce) it after the fact.  Make your case in your writing and be done with it.  As a reader I feel like I've been sucker-punched and then laughed at.

That's true, but I won't have a 360 to play on for 3-4 weeks (or so they say).  I've had a couple of friends that have sent theirs in and it took them 3 months to get it back.  And a couple of days ago I scheduled a day off from work so I could play Assassin's Creed when it comes out.  I don't think I'll have my system back by then.  Now I'm doubly grumpy.   >:(

I can understand why you would think that but in my opinion/experience I think it is.  Hear me out.

It would have been lovely if everyone lived happily ever after but that didn't happen.  Steinbeck had to write an ending that would stay true to the characters in the story.  If he had ended it with Lennie getting his rabbits and/or George getting his farm it would feel like a cop out in that Steinbeck didn't go for the truth.  By not going for the happy ending (with justice served) Steinbeck is able to reaffirm an aspect of life that, while not a fuzzy feeling sort of satisfaction, is satisfying to our understanding of mankind and how society works.

Well, if you've read The Princess Bride you will know that the parts with the Grandfather and boy are written into the story.  In fact they are part of the story.  You could even argue that their story is the main story of the book.

Anyway, have you read Of Mice and Men?  I love that book but I wouldn't say that "justice" was served.  Lennie didn't get his rabbits and George didn't get his farm.  You could even look at it that the "bad" guys won because of what George had to do in order to survive.  (I'm not giving details because I don't want to ruin it for anyone.)

For me a "satisfying" story is all about the expectations.  How the story starts gives you expectations on how it "should" end.  If the writer doesn't meet those expectations than the story is going to feel "unsatisfying."  If the writer meets those expectations (and even surpasses them) then the story will be very "satisfying" to you as a reader regardless if justice was served.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Alcatraz out?
« on: October 10, 2007, 08:59:14 PM »
How about in a preison?

First, I rearranged some shelves in a Barnes and Noble so your Alcatraz book would be cover forward instead of spine forward.  Okay it wasn't so much a "rearranging" but a "closing of a gap" on the other end of the shelf.  One thing to note is there were not very many books between you and Rowling's Harry Potter.  Maybe that will draw in some readers.

Second, I finished reading the book last night and I have a question.  Did you ever consider doing anything to off-set the authorial interruptions?  I have an older copy of The Princess Bride and all the scenes between the boy and the grandfather are in red ink.  Did you consider that or maybe a different font?  Possibly a font that looks like handwriting so it might look like scribbles in the margins.  Just curious.

Apparently I go for the bad guy types.  I want to know more about Marsh and the Inquisitors than anyone else.

I will admit that I was a bit worried (disappointed?) when I read about Marsh leaving Sazed.  I knew that I wouldn't see him again until the end.  Why?  Because that's kind of what happened in the first book.  I hope that doesn't happen in #3.    I wouldn't want Marsh to turn into some kind of deux ex machina for the plot each time.

I only caught part of Reaper and I too like Satan but I'm not sure about everything else.  I think I'll have to catch a full episode to see whether I like the whole thing.

I watch Pushing Daisies and I loved it.  I think the narrator is Jim Dale who did the excellent audio recordings for the Harry Potter books.  If not then he certainly sounds a lot like him.  I thought it was hilliarious but I wonder if the show could go on if he ever touch his "girlfriend" again.  I will be turning in.
