What ever happened to the sound sticks used by hazekillers in book one to disorient Tineyes and Mistborn?

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Best Mistborn Fight Scene *SPOILERS*
« on: November 04, 2008, 03:46:36 AM »
Wow this is definately a tough question. there are just too many awesome fight scenes to pick from. I think there are quite a few excellent examples missing.  the first fight we ever see when Kel breaks in to Keep Venture will always hold a special place for me (killing all those hazekillers with a paperweight). Vin and Zane's final fight was also epic (defeating ATIUM!!!). Kel vs Inquisitor, Vin vs LR, Vin vs Koloss siege, Vin and Zane vs Cett's keep, Vin and the mist vs 13 Inquisitors, Elend and the Seers vs Marsh and the Koloss, etc... the list goes on and on. Personally, however, i would have to side with fights involving Sazed. Feruchemy pretty much rocks. if i had one problem with Hero of Ages it was that the inquisitors didn't use it to its full potential.  Sazed fighting Marsh in Kredik Shaw was awesome. For not being a warrior, Sazed kicks butt.

alright, i've only taken the time to read the first 10 of this thread so far, but i decided i would share what i've learned and take the punishment if i happen to repeat stuff.

first off i'm going to gloat. as far as i know i was the first one on this forum to suggest that Vin's earring was a hemalurgic spike. http://www.timewastersguide.com/forum/index.php?topic=5697.0     there is my evidence.

second i have to say that Hero of Ages was completely awesome. it was incredibly complex and fulfilling, and even though i saw some elements coming there were still enough moments of sheer awesomeness that i'm still very happy about it.

third. this last wednesday i was able to attend the signing in huntington beach and was able to gather some interesting pieces of information from brandon. he revealed that the names of Preservation and Ruin were Ati and Leras and hinted that they were once just people who came to hold and were transformed by the respective powers. From their names we get the names of the two godly metals: ATIum and LERASium (the metal elend ate).
He also at one point made a comment something like "i've had many people tell me that i need to write a sequel to elantris, and then i hear this voice in my head saying 'maybe i already have...'" i'll let u speculate on that, cuz i really don't know what that means.
I got a chance to talk a little about Hoid with him as well, and we started talking about all the places he shows up, and then i said "yeah, but then he died in the beginning of Liar of Partinel"  to which he replied "well at least someone they called Hoid died..."  from that i kinda thought that maybe Hoid is a title rather than an actual name and that there are many Hoid's spread out across the cosmos performing some incredible duty...
he also mention the future book The Silence Divine and gave us a short explanation. Apparently in this story the magic system is based on diseases. what that means is that when you get sick the virus also imparts a special power, having evolved to do this in order to stay alive. the example brandon gave was that u catch a cold and then have the ability to fly for that time. the books working title comes from the highest class in this society in which a disease has made its people go deaf, but grants them some great power. i think this a very interesting concept as you could randomly gain and lose powers at anytime and in order to gain a power your body is weekend and your life essentially put at risk.

Brandon Sanderson / Similarity between warbreaker and dragonsteel
« on: June 16, 2008, 12:55:51 AM »
i've been reading some of the sample chapters of brandon's unpublished stuff and i couldn't help noticing the similarity between the storyteller that tells Siri about the war and the character of Midius in dragonsteel. both are storytellers who throw dust in the air for dramatic effect, with the difference that Midius has magic involved, but they are similar enough to be taken notice of.  was this kind of storytelling a common enough thing to be able to be in two separate series by the same author without people raising eyebrows?

i was thinking that this was probably more of brandon's cannibalism, and i was wondering whether one of them was going to be sacrificed for the other. i haven't read the latest version of warbreaker so i don't know if this has already happened, but if any alpha readers, or brandon, know...

 :o :o :o
do you mean to tell me that the Way of Kings is a crossover of Warbreaker and Elantris????
That could be the greatest thing since sliced bread!!!

i personally really liked lightsong. but like reaves said, i was really sad for him when he found out he wasn't an investigator or whatever. i understand though that that was how you showed how even though he wasn't anything special he could still be a hero and save the day.  it's been a while since i read it, so i don't remember everything. but from what i remember i wouldn't change it at all.

feel free to ignore me, but i'm going to reiterate. Keepers rock. i'll bet that nine times out of ten a fully-charged, battle-practiced keeper could kick a mistborn's butt.
again, i haven't read the wheel of time, so i don't know about channelers.

i think that you should add elantrians and awakeners to the list.  they're  not mistborn or WOT, but it's still sanderson stuff and they're pretty cool as well

i have to say that i actually saw the reappearance of Marsh coming a mile away, and the forshadowing was indeed there.  in the beginning where Sazed wakes up to find Marsh missing, i knew from then on he was going to reappear at some point later on in the book at an "unexpected" time. then at some point in the book, i'm not sure exactly where off the top of my head, Elend is dealing with the problems of the city and one of his assistants informs him of a lone Inquisitor lurking around Kredik Shaw. of course, it was Marsh.
after that when Vin finished fighting the koloss at the gate and went to the top of Kredik shaw to look over the burning city i honestly half expected Marsh to show up and for there to be a battle between them two.
I have to say the 3 best twists (there are so many it's hard to choose) would be the LR's identity, the revealing of the kandra spy, and the prophesy.

ok, maybe inquisitor was the wrong word. i agree that alendi probably didn't have eye spikes, but that doesn't mean he wasn't like zane and had spikes somewhere else. and just because Ruin wasn't directly influencing him doesn't mean he didn't use hemalurgy. he did hear the poundings of the well like vin did, and he didn't have allomancy to use bronze to do that. and i think it has been accepted that vin's earring is hemalurgic, but she doesn't hear voices, well, not anymore. the voice of reen is almost nonexistant in WoA.

i'm not so sure that the lord ruler would have kept the room completely secret. i just don't buy that he took the time to put all of thos cans down there (on shelves i think) all by himself. we're talking about a self-proclaimed god here. i think he would consider himself above that kind of labor. maybe he had groups of skaa do it and them just slaughtered them all?

i'd just like to point out that vin actually does something similar to what you described in WoA. when she first returns to luthadel during the battle with the koloss, she rips the gate off its hinges, pulling it towards her and then moves while still pulling causing it to pivot and smash into a group of koloss. i have to say that i agree however that it would be nearly impossible to have a maintained spinning coin shield. the person would have to continually be moving to keep the coins rotating and not crash into them. i think that if they only moved once the coin would have a very quick spiral route leading to the allomancer, kinda like a whirlpool (that's probably a bad example).
also, rhuan, i believe when an allomancer pushes or pulls, they do so with the full weight of their body. there is very little variation in that, the exception being flaring and duralumin. so the only way for the "tiny" amount of force you suggest is to have a constant succession of very brief pulls. i'm probably wrong about this stuff, but thats my two cents.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: The Comprehensive Hemalurgy Thread
« on: March 11, 2008, 11:50:28 PM »
i'm a little skeptical of your second rule since it seems obvious to me that there are several different types of hemalurgic powers, but i'd like to propose a third one.

3) Individuals with hemalurgic piercings are open to influence from ruin and possibly other entities.

i'd also like to point out that while hemalurgy does seem to be used in unison with allomancy and possibly feruchemy, that it is its own separate magic system. it is not simply an other-power-amplifier. afterall, it does seem like hemalurgy was around long before allomancy. it's likely that the lord ruler just found a way to use them to compliment each other like he did with feruchemy.
