Title: crazy
Post by: Lieutenant Kije on September 19, 2003, 07:36:15 PM
Arrr.  I just duelled myself.  I'm guessing it was Spriggan (dammage) who threw that in.  Cool!  I actually gave myself 23 points of damage by using style.

Post by: Fellfrosch on September 19, 2003, 07:40:17 PM
Actually EUOL put that in (remember, neither Sanderson can spell). I just dueled you Kije, and after a few blows the program just gave up--I think it realized that you started the battle with 0 hit points and thus didn't put up much of a fight.
Title: Re: crazy
Post by: Lieutenant Kije on September 19, 2003, 07:43:43 PM
Yeah, when I duelled myself I had 52 hp and 0 hp simultaneously.

In duelling other people I've found you either end up with 0 hp, 50-odd, or 200 or so.  And combat only lasts three rounds.

I be thankin' ye, EUOL.  Cool little feature.

It must be a hard life for a novellist who can't spell.   :)

Ok. Weird. I guess I should level the rest of my stats...

OH, and when you engage ina  contest of "verbal debate." you probably shouldn't be hitting people with your " " (which leaves too much up to the imagination).
New language should be devised

Oh wait, it's fine. I dueled HOM and he beat me up in the first strike. Shouldn't the duel be over if I am at negative hp?

Incidentally, I just dueled myself, because I'm wacky like that. I won, incidentally.
I used my 0 to hit SaintEhlers, and then SaintEhlers used 0 style. It was a grand time.

Heh.  I was wondering when you would notice that function.

Dueling is something I'm working on.  Right now, it's very undeveloped, but I left the link on so that people could have fun with it.

Items that will be changed in the future:

1) I'll try and make everything referance the gender line in your profile, so that it will know what sex you are.

2)  I will link the 'type of combat' to the attacks that take place.  Right now, it picks a type of combat which is weighted toward what the characters are good at, but doesn't do anything with that decision.  The three battles that happen are melee, ranged, and hand to hand.  This is just for playtesting--those are the only three I have done right now.

3) I will make it so when someone loses all their hit points, the match is over and a victor is chosen.

4)  I'll spellcheck the entire thing once it's actually FINISHED.  (Man, you people...)

5) Right now, if your username and your nickname are different, it has some problems.  I'll try and fix that.

6) If you haven't leveled at all, or chosen items, it also has some problems.  This is easier to fix.

Well, the dark magic battle works.  It might be overpowered, but I'm not sure.  We'll worry about balance later.

(Note--I'm working it so that light magic and dark magic defend against one another.  So, if someone attacks you with Dark magic, you use your Light Magic spell to defend.)

I actualy killed you once with a no spell.  I hit for 25 damage, it was the only time out of about 10 bouts that I saw a spell hit.  Again EUOL hasn't finished things, but also remeber there's a magic defence attribute.

Here;s one against myself that actualy hit then got absorbed by no spell

Spriggan casts a No Spell spell!
You defend with a No Spell spell!
Your spell absorbs 15 damage!
Spriggan hits you for 0 damage!

Title: Re: crazy
Post by: EUOL on September 23, 2003, 02:59:45 AM
Heh.  The problem with hitting is that people probably haven't increased the right attributes.  If you have the magic dammage attribute buffed, but not the magic 'to hit' attribute, you won't hit very often.

Once I have this all figured out, I'll post which attributes do what.  After that, I'll tweak for game balance.  And, after that, we might start trying to incorporate a visual interface that Sprig is working on.
Title: Re: crazy

Title: Re: crazy
Post by: Mistress of Darkness on September 23, 2003, 03:37:05 AM
What I want to know is, what if you don't care about Magic? What if your character is a straight "run up and hit 'em" type. Does that have any bearing on the types of attacks one is likely to throw?
Title: Re: crazy
Post by: Spriggan on September 23, 2003, 03:44:51 AM
Well what I think EUOL should do is add boxes next to each of the attacks (thrown, melee, hth and the 3 magics).  You'd then enter a numerical value to each.  0=don't use,1=highers priorty,2=mid=3 low.  That way you'll use the attacks you declare when you challenge someone and when someone challenges you.  Sort of like a simple attack stragategy.
Title: Re: crazy
Post by: EUOL on September 23, 2003, 03:46:27 AM
Yes, MoD, it does.

What the duel will do is compare your various skill points in the 'Duel type Determination' round.  Your various skills in these important areas will determine which type of combat comes up.

Charisma=Vocal Debate
Dark Magic=Dark Magic Battle
Light Magic=Light Magic Battle
Neutral Magic=Neutral Magic Battle
Weapon Skill=Melee Battle
Hand to Hand Skill=Hand to Hand battle
Speed=Ranged Battle

What the game will do (and you see it doing this at the top of battles now, though it doesn't matter yet) is add up the total points between both players in all seven of these areas.  Then it will take the total dark magic points (for both players) and determine what percentage that number is of the total points.  That will be the percentage chance that a given contest will be one of Dark Magic.  It will do the same for the other six attributes.

So, if you want to be a 'run up and hit them' type, you want lots of points in either Hand to Hand or Weapon Skill.  However, if your opponant has an equal number of points in Dark Magic, then there will be an equal chance that a given bout will be one of Dark Magic.

Progress Notes:
--The game should now work for players whose usernames and profile names are different.
--Light magic and Neutral Magic bouts should now be active.

Okay, things are cleaned up a bit, and I added the final type of battle--oration.  Now the plan is to add a check for hit points, so that when someone goes under zero, the battle ends.

Also, two classes--Student of Divinity and Warfare, I think--don't have weapon or spell names yet.

Once the system is completed, you should have it keep track of victories.

I would suggest that only players dueling others +-x their own level be recorded.  Like 3-5 levels or something like that.

Title: Re: crazy
Post by: Spriggan on September 23, 2003, 09:18:59 AM
well you can challenge anyone, but only those close to your level would acutaly be kept track of for the wins/losses.
Title: Re: crazy
Post by: EUOL on September 25, 2003, 04:19:28 AM
That's one thing I considered.  Though, to be honest, I'm worried about not leaving people many options for dueling.  If it's the 5 levels rule, the high people will have trouble finding others to duel.  A handicap might work better, if I can get it balanced.

However, I do intend to keep you from getting a duel percentage until you hit level five.  No one below five counts, and people below five can't record wins.  Something like that.
Title: Re: crazy
Post by: Mad Dr Jeffe on September 25, 2003, 01:08:49 PM
So when do you set it up so people with - hps lose the duel?
Title: Re: crazy
Post by: Spriggan on September 28, 2003, 07:58:56 PM
Well this is sort of "my" take on the forum game.  It's not 100% finished.  While it calculated HP and weapon damage by EUOL's method, it don't do magic right yet.  Since I'm not sure how Tage is passing the name of who's log in around you have to enter the names of you and your opponet.  But not the display name, but the log-in name.  So Mad Dr. Jeffe would have to type "ElJeffe", entropy would have to type "Charlie82".  it is case sensitive so make sure if a letter is capitilized in the name that you type it that way.
