Okay, folks. It's time to make a decision on which con to attend.
From what I've read, and from what people have said, I think that Cascadiacon--the Nasfic in Seattle--is the best choice this year. I've checked out the programming, and it looks like it has something for everyone. At least three major editors for those who are looking to make contacts, a decent smattering of authors, and good fan content for those interested in anime/media sorts of things.
I've put in a request to see if they'll put me on panels. If they will, then that will firm things up for me personally. I was also talking to Kije and Morag last night, and it seems that Seattle is within driving distance, for those who would be interested in that approach. In the case of 4-people to car, it would only cost about $30 to drive there and back. (But you'd be in the car around twelve hours each way.)
Like last year, I'll be getting a room at the con hotel, and would appreciate splitting the bill four ways, so would be looking for three roommates. (Married couples or single guys.)
Comments?

Morag moved to Seattle?

Okay, um...I just signed up, after deciding that traveling to one major convention this year was more important than...going home for any holidays... Today is the last day at the $95 price, so I went ahead and paid. If we decide the budget can handle it, Karen may come as well, but we're not sure yet. I or we would definitely want to crash/share with someone.
Next year Worldcon 2006 is in Anaheim, and we are currently living in Anaheim. (I, in fact, am already preregistered.) We have various amounts of floorspace and one spare bed and a long couch you can actually stretch out on, so we could accommodate various people crashing in our place for the weekend.
Now...Stacy is moving to Seattle, but I haven't heard that her living arrangements had any certainty yet, but umm...
-
Yeah, what is this with me always living in a con city? Yay! People come visit me! :)
When is Cascadia Con? Oh, just googled it--Labor Day weekend again. Yup, I'll definitely be living in the area by then. I will know by next week (meaning after the 7th) or the week after where I'll be living. At this point it's a tossup between Seattle and Bellevue. I'm leaning toward Seattle, but won't really know till I get there. Sounds like there might be some nice places with openings. I'm going to be looking for either a place with just one roommate or a one-bedroom (I'm even looking at a cheap 2-bedroom in Renton, near work, but I doubt it'd work on a number of other levels, mainly location for church/social life).
Anyway, that means that either way, I'll have at least a bit of space for people to crash on the living room floor or couch (and fewer roommates to worry about), and may be close or may be within a 20-minute drive. I'll know within a few weeks and will let you know, location-wise. Either way, as usual, people are welcome to stay. I know EUOL prefers hotels, but anyone else who's looking to save some money is welcome. Also, I'll invite everyone now to a dinner/movie/hangout at my place on a night to be determined.
I'm wondering what kind of presence Wizards will have at this. I'm thinking I could probably go to represent Wizards. Or at least, I have a feeling that if I asked, they'd let me be a part of the contingent, because they basically feel that if you want to do something, go for it. Either way, I've missed the cheapo deadline, so I think I'll wait and see what kind of involvement I might be able to have through work.
-
Well, if you do something like host a Wizards industry panel where you announce stuff coming up in your YA line, then...WC might comp your registration...
-
Stacer's just moving whereever the big convention is going to be that year. I've figured out her plan.
-
If I can drive there and stay for free at Stacer's place, I might do it. Man, I'm cheap.
-
Well, my husband is at least considering it. I really want to travel up and see Stacer, and since another friend will be moving to Seattle this summer, it makes a lot of sense. I will keep bugging him.
-
This all seems so lucrative. I think I may have to indulge myself and partake in this most minstrel of events. I will see.
-
Izzy, no matter whether it's for the con or just for fun some other time, I want to you come visit!
-
Cool!! Me too!! Now I just have to figure out how Mathias is supposed to have a good time too. . . .
-
I'm confirmed for panels, so things look like a go. I'll be buying my ticket soon.
Fell, Ookla--it's well within the realm of possibility for you two to get on panels. There are a lot of media-type things happening.
-
Cool!! Me too!! Now I just have to figure out how Mathias is supposed to have a good time too. . . .
Well maybe I can come too, and stacer and I can ooh and ahh over his cuteness.
-
Well maybe I can come too, and stacer and I can ooh and ahh over his cuteness.
Perfect. I'm there.
-
Panels, huh? Because everyone wants to hear what an unpublished wannabe has to say. Unless it's about editing or gaming, in which case I could speak with some modicum of professional authority.
-
Fell you're so funny that no one will care *what* you're talking about, you should just be on a panel.
-
Great, now I feel like I have to be funny. Um...a pig fell in the mud.
-
hey, we don't truck with dirty jokes around here.
-
/me laughs
Cool. I'll start looking for cheap flights.
-
Hmmm, so if I do go should I fly to WA or fly into SLC and head up with you guys? Suggestions, comments? Pamphlets?
Also, when is this thing? I'm looking for dates but can't find any.
-
Nobody on thei site can help you find a date. That's why they're here.
-
september 1-5 or something like that. Memorial day weekend, starting thursday afternoon and ending monday morningish. I (and Karen if she goes) will probably get there thursday late and leave Sunday or monday...
-
You mean Labor Day.
-
I mean ONE of the two holidays that my ward in Ohio used to have a picnic for every year at John Bryan State Park when I was under the age of 12. They were exactly the same, so I can never keep them straight.
-
No one else can either. We might as well just swap the two and no one would notice.
-
Aww! I want to come!
-
And you can, if you want.
-
So who definitely is going?
-
I'll definitely be there, whether through work or on my own.
-
Well, someone tell me if I should just fly to Seattle or fly into Salt Lake and travel up with you guys. Then I'll set myself on going or not.
-
Ookla,
I'm in for certain.
Gemm,
It's probably cheapest for you to fly directly to Seattle. If we do drive from Salt Lake, it might be fun to have you along, but I'm not certain if we're even going to do this.
Both of you,
Shall we room together, then? We can plan on us three in the hotel room, and I could book it. If Karen decides to come, we'd have a fourth slot for her (assuming she doesn't mind sharing a hotel room with two single guys) or we could probably find someone else.
-
Hurrah, I'll start working now so I can purchase these things.
-
I'm not sure yet about the hotel. When do you think that needs to be decided by?
-
We've got some time, I'm sure. How soon will you know whether or not Karen is coming?
-
Probably in a couple months.
-
So I'm looking at the guest list and comparing it to who's going to Scotland for WorldCon and I'm seeing a whole lot more recognizable names in Scotland (dang, I wish I had the money for another trip to Scotland). I'm actually not seeing a whole lot of recognizable names at Cascadiacon at all, actually. I see Joshua is going to Scotland, actually, EUOL. That would be so fun.
Anyway, I'm curious if any of you know what kind of attendance is expected for an off-WorldCon year. Do you know where I could find that kind of information, especially compared to numbers for WorldCon years?
-
Ok, I think I'll go. I'm going to be working my tail off making dough (and going nuts), so it'll be fairly amiable for me to go. Lets go Red Tights!
Also, how much would one want to bring to Cascadiacon?
-
Ok, so looking back into this, Cascadiacon will be September 1-5. Now, thinking only of myself here, will I have to fly in on the 31st, or will I make it on the 1st? And the other end of that, should I fly back the 5th, or the 6th?
Now, thinking of those who are going. Where are we going to stay? I'm sure if Brandon we're to use his powers of Authorial intent we could get a deal, I dunno. But hey, so yeah.
The Raddison is the standard room rate will be $ 89.00 plus tax (single to four person occupancy). At the Hilton it will be $109.00.
So persons, what's our next move?
