Brandon Sanderson / Re: WOT Help
« on: November 07, 2008, 07:32:32 AM »
If you are okay with reading long books, then you should read the books. I can see why so many people hate how the story slows down so much because sometimes I get tired of the books as well. That's only when I'm rereading them, though. The first time I read them I loved them. The second time, I still loved them but they started to feel slow. But Jordan writes so well, I actually care about the characters lives and I would hate it if he lessened the details he put into each book.

Wow, I had 4102 after day 2 but then I skipped a few days. Those skipped days can really hurt you. Day 5 I wrote 3003 words, so I'm only 1500 words behind?

Day1:1737  :)                  Day2:2365  :D             Day 3:0     :-[          Day 4:0    ???             Day 5:3003     ;D

Total: 7105

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Best Mistborn Fight Scene *SPOILERS*
« on: November 05, 2008, 01:51:21 AM »
You know, if Mistborn were a movie, then the most visually appealing fight scenes would have to be with Mistborn. And Mistborn fight scenes are the only ones you gave. But if I were to choose the my favorite fight scenes(i know favorite isn't necessarily the same as best), I would probably pick fights where Vin was just learning her power(i.e. killing of the lady mistborn in final empire) or when Sazed became a beast in WoA, defending Luthadel and killing all those koloss.

Those aren't the best choreographed fight scenes, but they're my favorite because a)Vin wasn't "perfect" in her allomancy yet or b) what Sazed did was just amazing and the emotion in reading him giving hope to Luthadel's people was the highest the books ever got emotionally for me.

So that's why I voted other(and I am alone in that)

At 4102 now after the 2nd day. I'm kind of surprised how easy the 1667 a day has been so far. Maybe once we're out of the weekend it will be a lot harder.

1737 as of the first day. Though it's 1:40 pm and I still haven't started Day 2's writing yet.

You know, I've always said to myself that I was going to write a novel but I never take the time to sit down and actually write it. So thank you for making this thread, because it reminded me of Nanowrimo and I signed up this year. Hopefully being signed up for it will actually make me start writing.

Chaos- She gave the example of it being too much like WoT and in WoT people talk about how powerful Aes Sedai used to be as well. So I don't think your logic is going to convince her. In the case of WoT, I kind of liked it that the main characters weren't the most powerful anymore. It gives them more obstacles to overcome, probably why so many books do the whole adding-powerful-people game. To create more conflict.

Besides, who cares whether Brandon explains why Elend gained so much power. Explaining doesn't change the fact that he still used that plot device.

And to say how I feel about this: I also felt kind of disappointed that Elend was more powerful, but I think it's because I like Vin more than him rather than it being because I don't like characters obtaining more powers. And as we get into the book, I'm sure we'll become more tolerant of Elend's power level-up.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Characterization in Mistborn
« on: September 29, 2008, 12:08:22 AM »
All the used books I've bought weren't written in or highlighted. And the bookstores don't give you much money when you sell them back to them anyway.

But you're right, there is some leeway in these kind of assignments. That's probably why so many people disagree with me. I'm barely on the wrong side of the line while everybody else seems to be right across from me on the other side.

You really need to pick confidence or uncertainty and stick with it. In the last post you said you were almost positive and later on you said you were right. BIG difference there.

It's like you're schizophrenic or something.

I guess everybody here just has a looser definition of cheating than mine. If he were asking for suggestions on books with good characterization, then that would be okay, but actually giving him the passages goes a bit too far for me. When I'm writing a paper, my teachers expect me to 1)do the research myself, 2)examine the research to see how it will help in my paper, and 3)expand on it in the actual paper.

Maybe that's just my school and Dangerbutton did say he's looking at other books as well, but if his paper were just about Mistborn then you guys basically did #1 and #2 for him, 2/3 of the assignment. Granted, the teacher can only see #3, but #3 is supposed to show how well you did #1 and #2.

Of course, if the teacher said "Dangerbutton, write a paper about characterization and ask as many people as you like to find examples of characterization for you," then this would be okay, but since he/she probably didn't say that I would call this cheating.

And yes, Wielder, I think having a book with all the main points highlighted would be cheating as well. Not the kind of cheating where you ask someone to summarize the book for you, but the kind of cheating where you didn't do all the work the teacher was expecting of you when he/she gave you the assignment.

Some teachers might not care, but there are others who want you to learn by following all the steps in the process and not by working on only the last step.

Does anybody else here feel weird about helping Dangerbutton "cheat"? Whether he's cheating intentionally or not, we are doing his homework for him when we give him the passages and tell him how it is characterization. I'm not accusing anyone of helping him/her cheat intentionally; I'm just surprised that people actually responded to this.

So if it wasn't obvious after reading the chapter, Ookla just told us that TenSoon will stay alive and be important enough to get more viewpoints. yay!

To get any version of White Sand you have e-mail Brandon.[/color]

How long does it usually take him to reply? Cause I emailed him 1 or 2 weeks ago and he neither confirmed nor denied whether he could email me those books.

Maybe you can ride a bike to a library, then.

The magic system is just too powerful for me and had too many holes for my liking.

What kind of holes are you talking about?
