HAHAHAHAHAHA! I figured it out! SE, the hair color you're looking for is chestnut. Is that it?

Think of a chestnut horse. It's a dark reddish brown, darker than auburn. I have a friend whose hair is a dark dark red-brown, and my other friend and I were comparing notes, and decided it was chestnut.

Other than that, I can't help you. Anything darker than that and still red isn't natural.

That's great stacer. :) I like chestnut.

Here's some of what m-w had to say.

Quote
2 : a grayish to reddish brown

4 : a chestnut-colored animal; specifically : a horse having a body color of any shade of pure or reddish brown with mane, tail, and points of the same or a lighter shade -- compare BAY1, SORREL 1

And it would make sense if Peks was comparing her hair color to horse (at least it would to me).

No, actually, that's the first thing I think of when I think chestnut, because we had 3 chestnut horses when I was growing up. But the problem is, chestnut in a horse isn't what I would call equivalent to chestnut in a woman. It's much much lighter. And maybe I'm not assigning the word correctly to human hair, and deep auburn would be a better description.

However, I do agree that it would be a good point of reference for Peks, because it's an imagery he's familiar with.

Also, as far as horse color goes, a bay is probably closest to what SE's been describing. It's an extremely dark brown with little red-gold highlights. I also had a bay pony growing up. Let me see if I can find a picture.

Here you go:

There's also this, which if you look at the pic at the bottom of the page, shows the color my pony was:

Yes, but men are sometimes like that. :)

THat'll teach me to disagree with a girl when it comes to hair.
I was at the grocery store picking up a prescription (all THREE daughters have/have had Bronchitis now) and so I took the opportunity to look at hair dyes. Here are the names of the ones that most closely match what I'm thinking of:

(very) dark Auburn
Rich Abuturn
Radiant Burgundy
Deep Chestnut
or (my personal favorite)
Plush Plum

Plum not so much. Too purple.

The problem is that hair dyes make for a universal color. The hair I'm thinking of (which I've seen on a girl's head,... yes, with whom I was smitten for the better part of 6 months) had this dark Auburn color, but also hairs that were black. It wasn't streaked, or in blocks or anything. but the hairs next to each other would be different colors. It was very cool. Very sexy. *sigh*

My blonde hair is like that too, both when natural and when slightly highlighted (I lighten mine by about a shade, just to brighten it up, with temporary stuff that washes out). I have all shades--light, light blonde all the way to brown, and even a few black hairs, though those are strays, mainly.

yeah, i guess that's why dyes don't look real. They don't do variation.

That, and the colors sometimes just look a little off . . .

I like to highlight with red, but don't due to poorness.

The washout stuff is fun though.
