Books / Re: review: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

I have to say, I did feel that there were things that seemed way too convenient [hide]including the new passage into Hogwarts to the Room of Requirement, which was essential to everything working out, and Aberforth happening to buy the glass from Mundungus. I mean really. Maybe I missed it, but did he know what it was and that he needed it to help Harry? Otherwise, it was completely contrived.

I would have also liked to see him with Ginny more. I understand the distancing; heroes always do this with those they're in love with because they're afraid of hurting them, but I think Ginny should have been like, "No, I won't let you push me away. Oh well.[/hide]

Even so, as you say, we love Harry, Hermione, and Ron too much to care, so we accept it.

I'm still not sure I get the convoluted explanation about the wand at the end. Voldemort was holding the unbeatable Elder Wand (that Dumbledore beat someone to win... how is this wand unbeatable again?), and the Elder Wand really belonged to Harry because Snape killed Dumbledore but Draco picked up the Elder Wand and Harry disarmed Draco who had his own wand and not the Elder Wand at the time, so when Voldemort cast a killing curse at Harry it bounced back and hit Voldemort? Did I get that right? Because if so, I would like to walk up to Ms. Rowling and kick her in the shins. Can ANYONE explain how that makes sense?

[hide]Okay, this is how I understand this (and if anyone else has a better explanation, please add. I'm not sure I understood this completely either). Draco had beat Dumbledore and could have killed him. When he did this, the wand gave its allegiance to Draco, even though Draco never touched the Elder wand. So when Snape killed Dumbledore, he didn't become the wand's rightful owner because Dumbledore had already been beaten. Then Harry beat Draco (again without killing him either), so Harry became the wand's rightful owner and gained its allegiance. So when Voldemort tried to use the wand on Harry, Harry was able to overpower, and somehow the curse hit Voldemort.

Also, the unbeatable thing. I'm not sure. I think it's because although the wand is powerful, others can use cunning and such to beat the owner (as in the story how the brother was killed while drunk and the wand was taken from him, and obviously how Dumdledore was able to beat Grindelwald).[/hide]

[hide]Well, of course I really liked and was really glad that Harry lived (and Ron and Hermione). It was cool to see them in 19 years, but they sounded so different at the end, I felt disconnected. I know, it'd been 19 years. Of course they would be way different, but I still felt disconnected.

I think with the NEWTs thing, since they can be homeschooled, I'm assuming they can also take the NEWTs without attending a school, so maybe they studied for a year with Hermione and took them the next year. Since Rowling didn't say their occupation, it'd be pretty hard to know if they needed it for what they decided to do. I have to say, though, that if Harry wanted to be an Auror, I have a feeling that they would let him into the training for it despite not having taken the NEWTs. I mean he defeated Voldemort afterall.

I was sad that Snape's Potions book likely got burned in the fire. His insights on Potion-making were brilliant and could really help Harry and others in the future. I was really glad he was redeemed and thought how it all worked out was wonderful. I don't see why he had to be SO mean to Harry that whole time. Snape should've just focused on Harry being Lily's son, rather than James's. But whatever.

I was so glad to see how both Ron and Neville stepped up to the plate and became leaders. Ron really grew out of his not having confidence in himself, which really made him a better match for Hermione. And Neville taking over at Hogwarts was brilliant! Esp. when he stood up to Voldemort after he thought Harry was dead and killed Nagini. Awesome!

I really liked how the final battle was at Hogwarts, where Harry feels most comfortable. I liked how the teachers immediately rallied around him and the students as well. I really felt that when he started the DA that they would one day be the ones standing behind him against Voldemort. He was creating strong allies when he did that. It was also cool how Neville was able to inform others to come to Hogwarts to help fight.

And of course when Harry came out of the invisibility cloak at the end, totally shocking everyone and giving hope to his allies, was just so cool. I LOVED that part.  [/hide]

I've been feeling more like this with other networks than Fox lately (*cough* NBC, Scifi channel *cough*), but I found this funny anyway.

Another suggestion: Orion.

And 42, they're just suggestions. I'm not attached to any of the names (I thought Emron would be a cool inside reference since it's not a commonly known name from BOM and he's a Nephite soldier). I am just trying to help Lost generate some ideas.  :D

It sounds like you're basically shooting down the names just to shoot them down. Is it because you want your brother to choose something you thought up, you're feeling argumentative, or what? Just curious.

It really is a guy's name. I got it off of our address book in Outlook. On babynames.com it says it's Russian. I was also thinking of Maximilian. Long, but of course you could call him Max.

More names:

Jace
Niles
Jadon
Noah
Stanton
Jamon (means Right Hand of Favor in Hebrew)
Josiah (means God Will Saves in Hebrew)
Norwood

Rants and Stuff / Re: Revenge of Grumpy Bear

Our Internet has been out at home since Monday. So my husband called Comcast to schedule them to come out to fix it. They can't come till Wednesday. He gives them my cell phone number. Their policy is they have to reach you by phone to make sure you'll be home before they'll come. He doesn't tell me this.

They called twice; first time while I'm driving (I don't answer the phone while driving) and second time I didn't recognize the number. I feel dumb not answering now. Well, they cancel the service call because I didn't answer the phone. When I call to talk to them about it (five minutes after the second call!), they say they can't get anyone here till Friday.  So we have no internet for four days! (Unless there's a cancellation.)

I'm mad at my husband for giving them my number rather than his (because they might give his number out to spammers, after all  >:(; I'm mad at Comcast for having a stupid policy like that and for not being willing to make sure they get someone out today (it was bad enough waiting two days just to get an appointment. Esp. since the problem with the internet is on their end); and I'm mad at myself for being dumb enough to not answer the phone. ARGG.  >:(

Would it help to know that if there is a sequel, they plan on it focusing on Jack Sparrow? From what I understand, it would focus on Jack's trying to find the fountain of youth. I think that it's good because Will and Elizabeth's storyline is finished in my opinion.

Movies and TV / Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End *SPOILERS*
« on: June 04, 2007, 05:18:31 PM »
Well, after the second one, I wasn't sure what to expect with this movie, but I have to say that I really enjoyed it. I was especially apprehensive after seeing the Sheldon's comic on it: http://www.sheldoncomics.com/archive/070527.html. But I have to say, I totally disagree with his assessment of the movie. I admit, I'm not really critical of movies (after all, I love watching Disney Channel movies, or at least many of them), but I didn't find it confusing at all. It made sense in a Pirates of the Carribean twisted sort of way. Sure, it was pretty fantastical with the whole rescueing Jack from being dead, and have a heathen goddess, but it's that genre, so, meh.

But I really liked this one. The ending was sad, but it made it more powerful. The scene after the credits gave it finality, in my opinion (i.e., no more movies to come), but I have heard speculation that there is a way for Will to leave the ship without dying (I only overheard pieces, so I'm not sure how. Something to do with Calypso and true love.) And of course, the thing about the fountain of youth. It's possible they wanted to leave the option open, but haven't decided whether they'll make another (possibly depending on how this one does and whether the actors are willing to do another).

Thoughts? Feelings? Disgust?

Movies and TV / Re: Heroes ***spoilers***
« on: May 22, 2007, 08:04:15 PM »
I think it's more likely that Candice becomes Nathan than that Sylar kills Candice and does it himself. The company will carry out their plan as well as they can without the explosion, and the heroes will be left to wonder why Nathan is back, and if it's really him, and of course it won't be.

That makes sense in a way, but didn't Nathan change to Sylar and then start using Sylar's powers (i.e. couldn't be Candice). She may be able to make you see things, but she couldn't make you feel pain that wasn't there. I would have to watch that scene again, but it seems like he starts to open up Claire's brain.

I was so annoyed that Hiro didn't have the sense to immediately, after stabbing Sylar with his sword, to cut off his head. Everyone knows that to make sure to kill a villain, you cut off his head, and then burn the body for good measure. How dumb. And no one seemed to take any notice of Sylar whatsoever. He was able to crawl (and I assume slowly from the blood trail) to the sewer and get under without any opposition. He knows exactly what he needs to do now to be President.

Which brings me back to Peter. We're assuming he survives because when Hiro went to the future, Peter was there and I can't remember who, but someone indicated that he was the real bomb, and not Sylar. So if he had been the one to explode and survived, then I doubt he didn't this time (esp. since he can fly and regenerate).

So Peter survives. Tell me, what will prevent Peter from blowing up later? In the vision of Peter exploding, he was in a very busy area of the city during the day. There were lots of cars around him and the other heroes were running away from him. Not like in last night's episode, where it was night, hardly anyone was around, and the heroes were standing there watching. This worries me. I know Nathan wanted to save Peter and everyone by sacrificing himself (assuming he was not able to get away before the explosion), but it may have been worthless. If Peter comes back the next day and explodes, then Nathan won't be dead long enough for Sylar not to take over (for people to know Nathan died). I'm sure Sylar knows where Candice is and will take her ability while she's still unconscious and replace Nathan. Maybe Peter won't even realize because he'll want to believe Nathan didn't die.

It seems to me that Peter's inability to control going nuclear is because Peter is a very emotional being, and when his emotions flare, so does his nuclear powers. Sylar, on the other hand, seems very unemotional, which is why he's able to easily control going nuclear. Ted had to go through a lot before he was able to control it. So I think this is why Peter goes to drinking and such in the future and seems much more cold. Just a thought.

And I agree with Fell about Candice not reverting to her true form. I was thinking the same thing.

Lately I've really been digging Josh Groban and Michael Buble. I really like that Buble is bringing back the style of Sonatra and the like. And Josh Groban's voice is just amazing. He does a lot of inspirational stuff that I really like (You Raise Me Up and Don't Give Up, You Are Loved).
