If anybody happens to go to the Sugarhouse signing tomorrow, it would be superkewl if they took pictures of Isaac's concept art. (As long as that's not, like, against the rules.) We, the oceanically inclined, would appreciate it and think it to be awesome.
Possible?
-
I'll see what I can do. I (surprisingly) will be in the area.

Ha ha. xD
J/K
I'd like to see it too Mi'ch.
-
I'm serious! That's clear up in the SL area, and I wouldn't go up there, even for the concept art. But since my sis has GS training, I'll be in the area anyways.
Brat. : P
-
Yay! I just read the announcement and was hoping someone would get pictures. Why did I move away from Utah?!
-
Brandon Sanderson is the my only reason that I EVER curse having turned up my nose at a job offer in SLC.
I honestly would have hated that job...and it paid reasonably but not any better than other prospects.
-
Hee hee. I got permission to post three of the pics I saw (edit: they'll be up tomorrow. My phone is being funny tonight.). But good news is that he'll be posting pics himself sometime soon.

Eeexcellent. My eyes twitch in preparation for the intake of awesome.

Well, here's good things for you all. I've been told to stress (both Issac and Brandon said it many times) these are very ROUGH pieces, and will/might change before they get into the book. But for now, here's what I am able to show you. (Sorry about the size/quality. They were taken with my phone)
First, a map of the entire cotanent. Keep in mind that all of this land is mostly rock (except for one piece that the pieces are safe from, but aparently that part doesn't count.)
Then, a picture of Shadsmar itself. (The black is all water, not land. But side by side you can really see it, huh?)
Finally, here's pieces of the writing.
A bit of info about the land. It's sweaped by these huge, magical (yes, they are supernatrial) storms at least every other day. So, all of the plants and stuff have a crystiline shell where they can withdraw into themselves when needed. Grass will withdraw when you walk, so if you're running you can have the grass actually part before you. Also, if you leave a gemstone out in the weather while a storm comes through (secured down in some way) when you go back out the gem will actually glow. (These are apparently important). There will be a total of 30 magic systems in the book (although, he doubts all of them will be covered.) WoKs covers four character view points, and the second chapter is from the view point of an awesome sounding young woman who is allergic to flowers (That was a funny coversation. He read from part of the chapter). There are also these HUGE swords (think Cloud swords) that can be summoned and appear ten heartbeats (his example time) after the summoning and can cut through anything. (From another coversation he said there's also these huge armors with shard pieces. Whoever controls these controls the armies, and the fighting is over those.) As for shard info itself, Hoid apparently will play a pretty big part (from what I can gather) and this is the middle of the shard cosomotology, but they aren't to origins of Shards and Hoid. Palendromes are sacred words, so all the important people have names that are almost palendromes. Also, the writing is symetrical (as you can see).
The chapter headings will each have these really cool arches that will feature up to four heads, and a symbol to give you a hint as to what the chapter is about. Hm, I can't think of anything else right now. I'll add more if I can think of it.
-
You forget that each book will tell a different characters back story.
-
Ooh. Plenty for me to pick apart, here.

I guess we know where the title Stormlight Archive came from, now.
30 magic systems
Going along with the theory that there's a magic system on a given world for every Shard present there, and a system that draws from the interaction of any two Shards, this means that the total number of Shards here is between 7 and 8...
Well, this means that theory needs revising. Maybe there are systems that draw power from more than two?
the writing is symetrical
That has to do with the mirrored nature of Roshar and Shadesmar, I think. It's also worth noting that the writings all end in points -- some, in fact, look very much like swords. The giant swords are summoned with a writing-based magic system, perhaps? God, there's too much here for me to analyze without going into total speculative fanboy mode.
-
Oh, that reminds me: Odium. It means hatred, and apparently is the most dangerious. *is being vague on purpose*

Actually, looking like swords was on purpose. Issac said he found an app for his ipod touch that let him draw stuff and then it'd make the same thing on the oposite side. So he started making things that looked like swords. After he had enough he started to pick it appart and find similar looking lines and set those to sounds. (I've got a pic that's a break down of the character said, but I'm not allowed to post it)

not allowed to post it
Baw. Curse you, dark god of RAFO.
-
Hee hee, I know see why Peter always does what he does. It's fun!
-
Ook's sadistic nature is spreading. Joyous. -_-
-
The concept art was AMAZING. I too had the good fortune to be at the aforementioned signing, and I must admit, I'm very impressed with what was shown. Especially what was on the laptop (EUOL brought a piece of FINISHED artwork... Said he'd be posting it soon)
-
I like how the continent itself seems to have been swirled like a storm. the shadesmar picture has me confused though. isn't shadesmar supposed to be the connection of all three planes of existence or something like that? why then is it a map of a large body of water? and does its outlining mean land? i'm confused...
-
What you're refering to is reamlmatic theory, which is the (in book) idea that each peron/thing exsists on three planes: Spritual, Cognitive, and Physical. Spritiual exsists everywhere, and is where most magic happens, cognitive is just your thoughts and the way you think, and physical is bodies and junk.

The black is water, and the white is land.

Mwa ha ha ha ha.
-
But what happens if something in one realm is changed?
-
Didn't you tell me the answer to that question while we were on the phone?
-
Yes I did. Ha ha. I'm pretty sure that's what EUOL meant by "Ask Chris" so that's why I told you. lol.
-
Thank you SO MUCH for posting! The info is much appreciated!

Very exciting. Cant wait for this series to start ramping up. Should we start a new thread and start speculating about random stuff that has no confirmation yet? ;D

Go for it. That's what the site is for. ;]
You might not get much participation yet, but you will get a LOT once the first book comes out. For now people might play with it for a while though.

I'm not worthy enough to start that high profile of a thread.. I lurk therefore I am.. a lurker that is. I think.
-
Awe, don't feel that way. All are welcome here. =] Well, except Utopia. . . he is not.
-
I kind of lurk too...I generally lurk for between 2 months and 3 years before people even realize I'm there (well...that's a habit I picked up AFTER my first foray into the world of fan communities).
I would be willing to not lurk if people constructively speculate.
-

Haha. I remember thinking this way. Some threads you just think "I can't start that thread. I'm not a big enough poster on this site yet." Start it anyway. It'll get you out of the lurking. And non-lurking is fun (plus, I need your titles for my list. And I can't get more titles for Death unless you become a regular....Why I am admitting this ulterior motive, I have no idea. But it's true. :P ).

Don't steal my soul.. I like it where it is.. in a box in my attic titled "Old Soup". The L got crossed out and a P was put there by my sister who doesn't know what a soul is... she likes soup tho.
-
Besides, on the non-lurking thing, recall that we were all lowly peasants once too. You cannot advance without posting, and topics are even better, as they lead to more posting.
Besides, I've missed the ridiculous speculations that used to go on around here. I remember when we would develop theories that we were dead set on, and Ook would laugh at us, and it was just buckets of fun for everybody!
Ahem. Yes. The art that is there looks quite awesome. This makes me sad that I did not attend the signing.
-
It makes me sad that I cannot attend the signing on Saturday...Stupid concert my dad has to go to that night and so therefore has to pick me up from Rexburg on Friday instead of Saturday, making it so I'll be in Twin Falls instead of Idaho Falls...Argh.
Anyway. I won't be stealing your soul. I'm not interesting in soul-stealing. I'm interested in your titles. Very much so. But only once you get to Level 6. But only for a couple Levels. However, once you get passed Level 15, I'll be VERY interested. I may even twg-stalk you...a little bit....maybe....*shifty eyes*

Here is a picture of a concept for the chapter headings. Here are the concepts:
The pictures that go around the edge of the arch foreshadow different ideas, emotions, and conflicts to be found in the chapter. The image in the center will typically represent the character the chapter is about.
I had taken 3 other pictures, but I asked Peter & Brandon for permission to post them, and they asked me not to. They regard the language of the world, and are very very very very early concepts, and they said they will change. They are really cool, but I guess we'll have to wait for Brandon to finalize something a little more to post. :)
-
Cool, thanks for posting!
-
I hope that 15 was printed like that on accident..
Or maybe hes trying to be "out of the box" artisticly. Hyuk Hyuk.
I made a funny :D
-
Justin, I had that as well, but was asked by Brandon and Issac NOT to post that. The three I posted were specifically okayed things. I'm not sure if they changed their mind or what, but I'd check with them to make sure it's okay to have that up.
-
Hey! I am a lurker too! We should have a banner or something....

*saves*
I kid, I kid. I like the ideas behind this, though.

Brandon okayed that one.
-
whew, scared me. :P
-
Okay. I wasn't trying to be a brat about it, I promise. I had just been told not to post it, so I was worried that he didn't want it to be seen still. Sorry Jason if I came off as a brat about it.
-
I'm just glad it's been given to us as a sneak peek.
If the system of showing the gist and central character of the chapter holds true it'll be a boon to me in indexing and finding scenes and quotations (something I struggle with in WoT, even with chapter icons, because the icons are imprecise).
I feel that a system of this nature is essential to an epic more than five or six books in length (although Mistborn's quotations effectively helped me mentally index the three book span) as mental prompts.
-
Eggnog, you're fine. :) I'm glad that everyone at the signing was respectful enough to ask before posting, since that allows Brandon to trust us more and feel more safe showing us stuff. I have to say, I'm impressed with all the Brandon Sanderson fans. :)
-
Go us! ;D
Trust us enough to release a free digital copy of WoK right now?
Heh.. because i'll be buying it no matter what. It has to sit next to my Mistborn hardcovers, Elantris hardcover & Warbreaker hardcover..
-
Thanks to everybody for posting the pics. Also, thanks to Brandon and Isaac for letting us see them. It looks pretty awesome, I'm not going to lie.
-
Vortx, if you don't want to wait till august for another BS book, you could always try Alcatraz (his YA books). The main character, Alcatraz (who would've guessed?) is a character that has Lightsong's wit (at times), and also a super cool magic 'Talent'. His amazing, incredible Talent? Breaking Things!
It really is quite an enjoyable series, even if only 3 out of the 5 books are out currently.
-
Yes, read Alcatraz... if that doesn't brighten up your day then you must be made of stone...
Anyway, thanks for posting the pictures! Those of us who are unlucky enough not to live in Utah get really bummed missing out on these things.
-
Tell me about it Pygmalion - I'm practically in Ontario (I can be there in 20 minutes!)...nowhere near Utah.
There's no way I'd get to see nifty at-signing things if someone wasn't nice enough to gain permission and take photos for me.
-
I'm happy in Texas therfore BS should move to Dallas or Houston... preferably Dallas :P

Its not too kiddish is it? I don't mind light heartedness but when authors think they need to dumb down their style for teenagers it is irritating. Heh :D
EDIT: Not that I'm a teenager or anything.. I'm 22.. with a heart of a 2 year old and often the motor functions of a 1 yr old.
-
Alcatraz is definitely NOT too kiddish. I'm 21 and I thoroughly enjoy it.
That would be great if Brandon moved to Dallas... it's within reasonable driving distance... However, one of my post-college back-up plans includes moving to Utah to haunt such wonderful signings, etc. ;D
-
Brandon isn't moving to another state in the foreseeable future. Sorry!

Can we steal him away temporarily with convention or bookstore invitations? I know people involved in planning and budgeting both.
-
Remind him we are armed.....
P.S. he made note of this when he spoke to the public at the Dallas signing...hilarious

Actually, you can't say you're too far away any more. There were two guys who drove down from Canada who were at the SLC signing.
-
I work nights and I can never get one off? Plus, if I ever try to get more than 30 miles from work I will be plagued with phonecalls and crying.
-
This seems like a good place for this. As far as I know, Shadesmar is the name of a patch of water shaped roughly like Roshar. I picked that up from the concept art. But in one of the Hoid Threads, EUOL is quoted as saying that Hoid is very adept at manipulating the Shadesmar for his own ends. That map is the first I've heard of the term, but lots of you guys talk like you know what it is. Did I miss something?
-
I always liked the idea of viewpoint icons. It makes even more sense for super-long epics with tens of viewpoints. :)
