Writing Group / Re: Abridge Speculists Meeting Coordination
« on: August 17, 2005, 07:34:59 PM »
I'm interested, but once fall semester starts up, I'm going to be super busy. If you don't mind me coming for only one week, I should be fine for Aug. 23.

Some semantics questions though - how do submissions work? Where/how do we meet? How are the stories critiqued? Do we get them before hand or read them in the meeting?

I think that covers it. If I have any more questions, I'll let you know.

Also there's an interview with EUOL over at Reigheena's site, why this wasn't posted earlier I'll never know.

If by interview with EUOL over at Reigheena's site, you mean the comments that Quark members have about Elantris, then here's the link. http://quarksff.org/index.php?option=com_simpleboard&Itemid=52&func=view&id=5602&catid=16

I do have my own site for my stories, but that's pretty much all I have on there. Unless someone's been hacking into it.  :o

Books / Re: Half-blood Prince Spoilers!

A few thoughts as I've been thinking over the book in the week after finishing it...

Snape
I think at the core, Snape is good. If he wasn't, then why would he alert the Order in book 5 that Harry was going after Voldemort in the Ministry of Magic? And thinking back on chapter 2, I have to wonder how much trust Voldemort has in Snape. After all, he has Wormtail (not very subtely) spying on Snape. And then we have Narcissa going to Snape. Why? She says that Voldemort trusts Snape a lot. Wait a minute. Something's not adding up there.

My theory? Well, Narcissa says that Draco is given the job of killing Dumbledore as a punishment to Lucius. Perhaps that's not all there is to it. Perhaps Voldemort played things just right so that Narcissa would go to Snape and put him under the Unbreakable Vow, thus FORCING Snape to the Dark Side.

Another thing I'm wondering. Why did Snape turn away from Voldemort before Voldemort fell? the only clue we have is that he regrets informing Voldemort of the prophecy when it turned out that he was going to kill the Potters because of it. Why? He and James were the bitterest of enemies! But wait a minute, Lily spoke in Snape's defense. Lily was good at potions. And she wasn't killed straight off by Voldemort even though she has stood up to him with her husband before, and she's a muggle-born, who the Dark Lord supposedly hates.  I can definitely see a possibility of an attraction for her from Snape.

Horcruxes
Or specifically, Harry as a Horcrux. This is a very interesting thought. It explains why Harry has his powers. And it throws in an interesting twist for when Harry tries to kill Voldemort, and then both realize that he still has a Horcrux alive. This would also mean that Harry would probably have to die in order for Voldemort to also finally kick the bucket.  :'( But there's still something that doesn't quite sit right. If Voldemort can't possess Harry because of the love spell his mother put on him, then how can part of his soul be living in Harry ever since the attack?

Children's series

What did they think this was--some kid's book?

I agree. I mean with book 4's dark graveyard scene, book 5's angst, and book 6's snogging, this can't be a series that kids would understand everything in. It makes me wonder how this series would be different if it wasn't so popular. I mean the editors wanted Rowling to take out the troll in the bathroom scene in book 1. Now they're fairly hands off. Don't you think they'd at least have taken out some of the above mentioned scenes if it wasn't so popular? What are your thoughts?

You're allowed to Criticize EUOL's writing if you have the appropriate license, which can be purchased via me for $30 (pay pal and most major credit cards accepted). This is for the rites to critique Elantris, each additional book will cost you $30 as well.

Does this license include the right to give away spoilers? Remember, most of my criticisms involve spoilers. And does it allow me to deal with the characters in any way I choose, including death and worse? All with a guarantee of no retribution from the author and any of his fans? That could be fun... :: devil face ::

And as for a likeable villain, I think its good, as it blurs the line between good and evil. It adds a bit of intrigue, which is always good in my book. That bit, I did like in Elantris. What I didn't like was that when Hrathen takes a certain drink, it made him appear weak, and that ruined the respect I had for him. It came back somewhat in later chapters, but not completely.

So, how could I get involved in this writing group? I'm in charge of my own writing group, but I'm interested in reading new things, as well as hearing new opinions.

Hi! I'm new here too. I read Elantris a week or so ago (staying up until 4am to finish it). I don't really know why I got so sucked into it. Maybe I was just enjoying trying to figure out the plots before Brandon revealed them. (I got some, but kudos to Brandon for still managing to surprise me). And maybe it was the fact that its been a while since I've read a good fantasy book. (Being in a writing group destroyed my ability to enjoy mediocre novels, but then, maybe that's not such a bad thing). I also liked Sarene. She was strong, but also human. She definitely reminded me of myself and my best friend.

That said, I'll also venture out onto a limb and say that there were some things (mostly involving characters) about the book that annoyed me. unfortunately, most of them are spoilers and so can't be discussed here. I'm also hesitant to criticize the book, since the last time I criticized a webcomic, I got ripped apart for not thinking like everybody else. I do have faith that people here are more receptive though :: crosses fingers ::

I guess I will mention one thing. In the first part of the book, I set myself up to hate Hrathen, since you always hate the villain. But i remember finishing part one and thinking "I can't hate this guy!" and it was a let down. Guess it just goes to show that a good villain goes a long way.

Still, this was an enjoyable book, and I hope to write something like it someday. (well, not in the sense that I'll have silver skinned characters, but in that I'll be able to write something unique and enjoyable. And I wouldn't say no to similar success.  ;D )

My name's Andy (and yes, I'm a girl). I'm studying Computer Science at BYU, where I am the Art and Writing VP in the university's scifi-fantasy club, Quark.  I love reading, writing, watching movies, and playing games.

I've been to this site before, but got sucked in after reading Elantris and surfing EUOL's site.  And I guess that's about all for now.
