Starting a new thread for this to get people's attention.
ok, this is really sad. And even more sad that it's happening on my watch.
But in the last week we've had ONE article. ONE. That was busted out during my lunch break and probablyl poorly edited.
Guys, we need content. Now, i'm as guilty as the rest of you. I have stuff I've been "meaning to write" and haven't done. So there's no pointing of fingers here. I have good excuses for putting it off. I'm sure everyone here does.
But as my mission president was fond of saying, "Excuses do not change performance." The fact is, we still have nothing available to run. It's time to get those game sessions recaps, game reviews, or gaming thoughts out. Love a web comic? Time to review it. coming up with a new system? Time to write it up and send it.
The biggest thing that keeps TWG "legit" (ie, something we editors and contributers can put on their resumes as an amateur effort that develops their career worthiness) is the fact that it's dependable. We haven't been dependable. Any of you with pretentions of writerliness (it's a word, really), please help us out. We need your content! It's your community too, help it grow and improve by doing more than cruising the forums.
I will be most grateful.
-
Have you gotten any more books lately? Also, I was curious if you could use your editorliness (probably not a word) to contact fantasy publishers other than WoC for advance reader copies of things coming out for review.
Oh, and I just finished a book that I'll be reviewing for the next theme day.
-
I do have a book i meant to send you. I'll do that tomorrow. I'm pretty sure I have it still. to be sure, email me.
Incidentally, until I know that my friend's server is up, I'm using gmail. Send to me at thelemur at gmail dot com.
That's the best place to talk to me about getting product too. We like to move that off the forum.
-
I plan on doing something this week once I get back from vacation. But, ya, I don't get paid here so when I'm on vacation I usealy don't hang around TWG much (I've only checked the site twice in the past 5 days). But I'll do something tonight at work for tomorrow.
-
I'll pump out my next Eva review later today then. Maybe the next two. I also have a Shadowfist article I should write too, although since we were plotting to try and get an interview to run alongside it, I'd need to do that as well, so it's not a short term solution.
I've been reading free books from Drive thru RPG. Could review some of them, even though most seem out of date or sourcebooks for systems I don't know. But who ever said I had journalistic integrity?
-
I'm dead tired right now. I've been up for for a long time allready and just drove back from Idaho to goto work. I'll try and get something done tonight at work but I may not be sentient enough to do it when I have time in a few hours.
-
Well, I'm feeling a little bit better. We've gone three days in a row now, and only one was written at the last minute. I even have an article for tomorrow. But next week's got nothing folks. I'd love to see a backlog again.
-
I've got one I'm working on. I haven't finised it yet because of a patch problem with WoW that I've been trying to get to work. And when I'm running the installer it pretty much eats up my CPU and takes about 30 min to do. But I'll have it done sometime soon.
-
Instead of writing, I spent the day putting my Shadowfist cards in to plastic folder sleeves, playing sleeves, putting together decks, and making a computerised database of all my cards,
I'll try and get something tomorrow, since that took longer than I anticipated spending on it.
-
at least your wasted time was more fun and productive then mine. But I am getting paid to waste my time so I guss I win no matter how crappy it goes.
-
I haven't written because I've been trying to beat a laptop into doing what I want. I think I've wrung all the performance I'm going to out of it, so it's back to writing for me.
-
Just another reminder to those that submit articles, if you include formating tags they should be HTML tags not your standard forum tags. If you don't know HTML then just don't add any and we'll take care of it.
-
:-[
eh heh heh.
I thought they were one and the same.
But then you probably figured that out.
Sorry!
Boy is my face... um... purple, I suppose...
(See, 'cause it's blue normally... eh heh)
<--- see?
-
Jeffe, I was wondering how you wanted your article formated. I went ahead and iltalicsed the paragraph headers assumeing you wanted something like that.
Edit: Also the title is too long, it gets cut off.
Spirit Magic, God Magic and Mind Magic, the intric
Could you shorten it or break it in two makeing part of it a subtitle. Thanks.
-
Why no updates? We've got two articles waiting.
-
I flaked. I forgot I hadn't done it. I apologize.
-
just makeing sure your ninja monkeys didn't rebel aginst you.
-
yeah, remind me if I haven't posted anything by 10am your time, and I'll get on it.
-
*/McDingus hides all the ninja bananas he had brought out*
Nope. No rebellion here...
-
I'm usealy asleep at that time SE.
-
then remind me when you wake up. or someone else remind me when THEY wake up. Or something.
-
**obsolete post which would have made me sound foolish was modified here**
-
oo! I want to know what you said! Besides, you know you can remove your own posts completely, right?
-
I reminded you to post something, but you already had. And I never realized you could remove your own posts until you said it was possible and I noticed the little "remove post" link. Huh.
-
The inteview with Jason is posted. I'm going to be adding some hyperlinks and writeing out an intro for it. Stacer if you can give it a once over that would be great.
-
I will do some copyediting tomorrow night--it's been a long, busy week and I haven't gotten to most of the articles that were posted this week, sorry.
-
no problem. We appreciate you doing this for us.
-
Guess that means I should start working on my Shadowfist review and stuff, then?
Sorry if I've been flaking lately. I just got a job, and had multiple training shifts, and bought myself a Gamecube.
As a matter of fact, I'm writing this from work at the moment. :)
-
Any of you CCG fans want to write an intro about Allieagence? I just don't care/know enough about the genra to come up with anything that dosen't sound cheesy or stupid.
And ya JP, go ahead and contact the guy about the shadowfist interview.
-
Like, an intro for the article we just posted? Or an article itself? I can write a paragraph for an intro to the interview, but I think it would have to be someone who played the game itself to write an article.
-
no an intro to the intreview. I feel there should be some lead up to it, but that's just me.
-
I wrote a paragraph to intro it. it's now in the article
-
Nicely done Sir. Now we just need a review. Guess we need another excuse to get Fell down here so he and EUOL can play and review it.
-
Argh! I just spent two hours proofing that interview and went to save it and the wireless connection had gone kaput, and it didn't save. I give up for now, will try again when I'm at home (I'm at the family history center now and keep getting interrupted).
-
Sprig, I looked over it and it's cleaner now. I clicked on the links to their sites, though, and 3 of them don't work. the-crazed.com, sng0.org, and dmpg.net don't work. Are they correct?
-
Dono, I'll dubble check the HTML. Thanks Stacer.
-
No update today? Do we have a tuesday article? I was planning on haveing one for wensday.
-
i was sick and was online almost not at all. I'm a bad boy. There's one article in there I could ave run and even edited. Sorry.
-
well there's no reason to be sorry for being sick. Just remember you can e-mail me, EUOL, Fell or Tage to get something posted if you're not able to for some reason.
-
well, there wasn't anything to do but write a blurb. Which is just as easy as emailing. I coulda done it. I just didn't think about it because of my routine. I don't got nothing for tomorrow though, so if you still think you'll have soemthing done, that would be great.
-
ya I will...Just need to come up with something to write about.
-
I'll have something later today. Think I'm going to do a movie review or something. But I need to watch the movie first. Expect it around 1-2 pm your time SE.
-
that's good. Fell submitted something for today, so I'll run yours tomorrow. I've got Friday covered.
-
Sweet, all works out then.
-
I'm working on a review of Eberron, I can have it done for Monday if you don't ahve anything else planned.
-
well, *I* have lots of stuff, but none of it for a specific date. Or indeed actually written. So Monday's probably good.
-
Should I just take thursday as my day then? Since none of you ever replied to the e-mail I sent out 2 weeks ago?
-
yes, please do, I think.
-
Ok, well we'll see how this goes.
Also since my article wasn't due till today I barely started on it. So it'll be done later today.
-
My article is up. I was going to write one or two long ones, but I figured why not streach them out over a whole month.
-
I'll blurb it from home. Leaving soon.
-
Umm...Crap it's my day for an article. I don't have it finished, but I'll get it to you later today SE.
-
I was just gonna ask you about that. I'll keep an eye out for it.
-
uhm. sprig? Was this goign to show up during MY today?
-
Sorry was realy tired today, just woke up. I'm still working on it.
-
Sprig, are we getting part two of that Clix series tomorrow? (Or anything else)
-
I'm working on a series overview for Asimov's Foundation, kind of like what I did for LeGuin's Earthsea. I'm only partway through the series, but I am working on it.
By the way: are these kind of articles/reviews desired for the site? I know the books are not exactly new releases, but it might be a nice resource for the uninitiated. If the powers that be don't wish this kind of content I won't worry about it. I was just rereading the series and thought I 'd write something up for it if it would help.
-
well, we were doing "classic," OOP games before. So I don't see why "classic" SFF should be a problem. I'll run 'em.
-
Ya, it's about 80% done. Need to finish up a few points and then link all the dials.
-
Mine's in. I'm going to be adding links over the next hour or so.
-
Hey, you guys want to post this little pseudo-editorial I did about my visit to the Tor offices? I was going to throw it up on my blog, so it's only loosely organized, but you could use it as the EUOLogy for this week if you want. I'd hold off to post it on my sight for a week or so that way.
It would be nice if I had a word goal for this little column I'm going to do. It would make it feel more professional.
-
yeah, submit it as viewable by "mods" and I'll blurb it. or else post it yourself tomorrow.
How does 500 words grab you as a goal?
-
I can do 500.
I'll post it up, you blurb it and give it an appropriate title and format it how you wish. I do like the EUOLogy column name, though.
I think having weekly columnists might lend us just a little bit more credibility. I'll post these here, then hold off a few days from reprinting them on my site. It would be nice, I think, if we put a little byline at the bottom of the pieces too. IE, a EUOL, aka Brandon Sanderson, is blah blah blah. He writes on various topics related to fantasy, being a writer, and webcomics. Find his column here on the TWG on Fridays!
I just think some things like this would make it look more like a magazine column than a random person's post. Probably better if you do the posting and blurbing too, since that will make it seem more legitimate--you being the editor, me being the columnist.
What do you think?
-
ok, provide me with a short, two-sentence bio. We'll link to your site as well from the bio. i'm happy to blurb. I'd like to run the EUOLogies on Fridays if we can do it regular like.
Heh, if Fell gets a job at Wizards, we have to move him out of management for conflict of interest, but we could get him to do a weekly column too (maybe?) then we'll have a professional fantasy novelist AND a game industry professional with columns. the rest of us peons can provide the rest of the content.
-
Lol. You want to know what would rock?
Weekly columns from a gaming professional, a professional author, AND a professional manga editor. See if you can get 500 words on a random topic out of Ookla once a week!
-
For a moment I thought EUOL was going to say '...and a professional wrestler!'
But that would have been strange.
-
but he's right, it would rock. Ookla, what would it take to convince you of that?
-
Bio:
EUOL, aka Brandon Sanderson, writes epic fantasies for Tor Books. Find his column at the TWG on Fridays, where he will discuss whatever random topic pops into his head--including, but not limited to, reviews, articles about writing, and con reports. Further information can be found at www.brandonsanderson.com.
-
K, updated.
-
Sent in a MTG decklist that I'd actually had done for a long time.
-
sweet, that means I can slack
-
Just got a grundle of books in the mail, one from Palladium and a handful from WotC. I'll see how quickly I can turn them around. I've also got a Heroes Unlimited thing that I've been avoiding posting because I don't want to wess with the html, but I think I've finally convinced myself to do it.
-
Just submitted the next two Eva reviews. One Acidentlly got put into Video games. Someone else can fix that, i don't care enough.
-
I'll fix it. And don't think I don't appreciate this chance to clean up your messes :)
-
EUOLogy #2 is up and ready.
-
Hello? SE, you going to blurb that thing?
-
no. er.. yes. Yes I did.
Sorry, it's a sucky day.
-
ok, EUOL will cover us for Friday.
Is Sprig gonna cover his Thursday beat? Perhaps with Batman Villains Team number 3 (or anything else)?
I've got two reviews I need to finish, plus all the other work I keep pretending I'm going to do, so I've got tomorrow, but I hope that Thurs and Fri are covered.
-
I've got about three reviews I've been meaning to do, plus a review of a 4-book series. I will seriously work on that this week. I've gotten out of the habit what with vacation, and school starting next month has gotten me reading Swiss Family Robinson instead of fantasy. I'll get back on Elminster's Daughter (though I must say that SFR is more enjoyable).
-
Ya I've allready started on this thursdays article.
-
EUOLogy posted.
-
good. EUOLogy will get blurbbed tomorrow
HOpefully sprig will turn in his in the next little bit and I don't have the spend the morning reviewing Exile
-
Posted as in sent to someone, or posted on the Admin page? There aren't any articles waiting (I prefer to proofread them before they get posted to all).
-
It's on the admin page. Admin submitted articles are automagically approved, so they're never in "articles waiting"
There will be a book review up within the next half hour that I will blurb immediately, customers willing.
There is a book review up NOW. It went much faster than I anticipated.
-
my whole scedule has been messed up this month. I never end up haveing the time to write my artciles on tuesday or wensday, something allwayse comes up on those days that keep me from getting near my PC.
-
Ok, I've purchased the Planar Handbook and love it. I feel the need to write a review of it. I will do so as quickly and stingently as I can. Let Hope's wings guide me as I wisk through the pages of Entropy!
-
Depending on my houseing situatoin I may not have time to do an article this week.
-
incidentally, I plan on crapping something else out today, so that our only article isn't a short blog. it might be late though.
-
Good news is that it looks like I'm not going to be looking for a new aparment in the next week or two. Now if I can just rember to write my article.
-
I just gave some D&D books to EUOL and some minis to Sprig, so we'll probably see reviews of those sometime in the future (notice I didn't say the near future...).
-
humm...Did said Minatures goto EUOL to give to me then?
-
Yes they did. I'm not surprised that nobody mentioned that to you, given how long Tage had HARP without passing it along. Did you, in fact, ever get HARP?
-
Yes Sir. Grabed it last Saturday.
-
I've got the minis here, Sprig. I just assumed that they were for us to play DnD with. I don't see any other use for them. (They're DnD minis. Cool for gaming figs, I guess, but who's going to play DnD tabletop when they could play clix or warhammer?)
You're welcome to the books, too. You like those types of things more than I.
-
As long as someone reviews the books, it mattereth not to me who gets them. Also, Sprig, I sent you my older box of DnD minis as well, since I really don't have much use for them (the only use being, as EUOL pointed out, toplay DND).
-
Thats about all I wanted them for. But maybe me and 42 can try out the actual mini game.
-
so , will I see clix tomorrow? Or am I forced to post another rant people will hate?
-
I'll try to get an article or two in to you tonight.
-
see, it's all about reputation. I get a bad rep for polls, and suddenly someone is making DARN sure I don't have that responsibilty. I write a SINGLE article with bad structure, and suddenly everyone's rushing to get in more reviews. I have POWER!
-
Well, I've had a Heroes Unlimited power table done for a while and just didn't post it because I feared the onerous html it would inevitably require. But I bit the bullet and posted it, so now we can post that one of these days--it's not really an article, but it's something.
-
I'll have my article in today. Probaly around 9-10 MT.
-
k, i'll wait till lunch to post something. Good to have a reserve in there. I expect a EUOLogy tomorrow.
I need another 2 articles for next week. I'm going to do a con report each day of the con if there's material to sustain it. Since several timewasters will be there (Stacer, EUOL, Ookla, Gui.... er.. Chris, and Brenna) I wouldn't be surprised if they have stuff to include. However, first con report will be friday, since I won't have material for thursday (it's the first day of it) though I may post at night instead of mornings: ie, Friday's article will be a report posted Thursday night. I think we'll still have a EUOLogy next week in addition to the report. I haven't decided if I'm going to post reports saturday and sunday, or if I'll put those off till monday. Again, we'll have to see what material I have. It's possible we'll just have one report on tuesday night/wednesday morning for the whole weekend. My laptop, however, will be there.
-
I'll do an article for next week. If you want it on Thursday , since that's my day, I'll do it then. Also you can allwayse link to EUOL's blog since I'm hopeing he'll be doing daily blogs from it. I should have your blog up and running too SE.
-
Ok, watch for my article. I'm done typeing it just going be formatting for the next 5 or so minutes.
Edit: Done
-
My "little people" review is also done. I won't be able to send it to you till I get home from work, though.
EDIT: Mine's done too.
-
Heads up--I might not have anything until Monday. I'll try and write a EUOLOGY tomorrow during my training, but who knows what kind of time I'll have.
-
hrm... Ok, folks, I'm using my last stored article today. i need two mroe articles (not counting Sprig's) for next week to fill it up.
-
I just sent a little somthin' over. An offering to the Timewasters' Gods, if you will. Post at your leisure.
-
The TW gods are pleased with this offering.
-
Sweet! I'm going to slacker heaven.
-
SE, I emailed you a review last night. Did you get it?
-
yesh. I haven't read it. I fear that I'm turning into Fell, and I have a much more prompt response to those submitted via the form.
-
Well, it is a "little people" review, so if that is going to happen still, there's not a rush on it anyway. Or I can resubmit through the form if you like.
-
I got something up (thank goodness for booring meetings....)
But, it will probably need some proofreading--I did it fast. I also didn't html tag the sections that should be bolded.
-
well, one thing I'm going to do is change all your All Caps into italics face. I'll play with a lot of formatting. So that means I now have three articles for next week! One more and I'll cover Friday. If the con isn't interesting enough, I have another pondering article about sci-fi science as "magic"
-
EUOL, I proofread it. One thing you'll need to go back and fix yourself is the Setting under Specific Criticisms. It's from a Card book, something about sci-fi?
Oh, and is it Recluse or Recluce? Amazon and a couple other sites I've looked at that seem official have it with a C.
-
and EUOL spells it two different ways. Otherwise that column will run Monday-ish.
-
Hum. I wonder how happened. I must have hit 'undo,' which took away what I'd written and replaced it with what had been there before.
SE: I'd rather you either post it today, or save it for next Friday. If I'm going to have people coming here to read my columns specifically, they need to know which day to find them.
-
then I'll wait a week. I think about 2 pm my time is later than I really want to post articles.
-
btw, I'll still need Sprig's Thursday article and if someone could bust something out for tomorrow, that'd be great. It looks like I might be too busy.
Now, I'm counting on wireless connection, some hotspot at the hotel or con I can use, or at least brief access at my brother's house. But if this turns out not to be, I need you guys to cover for me. Fell, Sprig, and Tage, I'm putting responsibility on you. I will let you know as soon as I can on Thursday about it, but since I"m travelling Thurs morning, I don't expect to be able to post by a reasonable time on Thurs. So Sprig, please make tage or Fell post your article. If you don't hear from me by 10pm Utah time on Thursday, assume I'm unable to get access all week. There's a EUOLogy in stock for friday, you'll have to fend for yourselves Mon and Tues if I can't get on.
-
If all else fails, SE, we have wireless at my house. But I don't think you'd have to go all the way to Brookline. The Boston Public Library is just down the street from Hynes and has wireless (though I must say, their hours are terrible--they close at 5 pm every day and aren't open Saturdays, so don't know what good that'd do you). Also, most Starbucks have wireless zones, and Starbucks are a dime a dozen here. I'm thinking Hynes, being a convention center, ought to have a wireless zone, but I don't know for sure. Oh, and there are several colleges nearby that have libraries with wireless zones, though most likely they'd require a password to get into the network.
-
I just threw the response to JamPaladin's deck challenge into the magical article bin. Work finally let up enough for me to focus on getting it done.
-
I'll try and get Fell, Tage or JP to post my article once I get it done.
-
you're on for tomorrow, Sprig. EUOLogy on Friday. Hopefully we'll know in about 12 hours how much I can do.
-
Just a technical issue, SE--I didn't name this one a EUOLogy for a reason. It wasn't a column, but a review. You, as the editor, are allowed to do whatever you wish with it--and I still intend to turn something in most Fridays. However, in my mind I intend to separate EUOLogies and reviews.
-
Oh. Well, I'm a little lazy to go fix it. But I'll probably go with that in the future.
-
Yeah, that wasn't a 'fix this.' That was a 'here's what I was thinking.' You're in charge of this sort of thing as far as I'm concerned. Do whatever you want.
-
I'd just like to note that it fails a bit as a review if it is logged as a EUOLogy since people will not see it in the book section or with the book title in the subject line. Unless SE used his ninja skills to do those things. Which he might have done. Or might not have done.
-
I logged it as a review and not an article when I posted it. (Or, at least, I THINK I did.)
-
no, you did EUOL, SE changed it later on.
Also are we getting an article today?
-
you will get one today. You didn't yesterday because I stayed up Monday night till 3, then didn't wake up in time to use the internet before leaving. I spent the rest of the day in cars, planes, or strangers houses with no net access. I didn't anticipate that.
-
Guess where I'm writing from: work, at yet another all-nighter! Now you know why I'm applying for other jobs.
When one editor is at work every waking hour of every day, and the other is off at a con, things really fall apart around here. With any luck we'll be back up and running by Monday, if not Friday.
-
I just want to say that Saint needs to give me materials to reivew that I can review without having to play (since he keeps ducking game day) Im idling in the wings.
-
Today's article is in. It's not Iron Kingdoms, I still have about 1/3 the book to read, so instead you get a random heroclix article with aquaman!
-
see, Jeffe, what are we playing that I've given you that needs playtesting? I didn't think we were planning on playing Dr. Lucky anyway.
-
well ten minutes for any CAG would be good... but when am I gonna get more RPG books to review?
Basically Im complaining because I am material less. :-/
-
you'll get more RPG books about the same time that there are RPG books to be gotten.
-
I've been taking a lot of screenshots during the World of Warcraft stress test beta. I should be able to provide an article of sorts along with those after it's over. Until then, well...go away. I'm playing a game. ;)
-
Just a heads up that I won't have time to copyedit with any regularity this week or next. I started class today, and the Victorian class is going to be the most intense class I've taken in this program. Talk about starting with full steam! Anyway, my last day of work is next Friday, so between now and then I'm going to be spending all my waking time either at work or working on class stuff. I will catch up as soon as I can.
-
EUOLogy is up!
And Stacer, it is probably in dire need of editing....
-
I'll do what I can over the weekend. I usually can't concentrate on homework at the Family History Center anyway. Which reminds me, I have to get a bridal shower present for tomorrow (which is right after).
-
Got a little copyediting done. EUOLogy down through Con Report #3. That's enough for tonight. I'm going to bed.
-
My article for this week is in, it's quite not finished yet since there are a few week points in it that I want to think about and possibly rework. So don't post it until Thursday.
-
I've got Friday covered. My Prerelease tactics article for the Champions of Kamigawa tournament is nearing completion.
-
Fridays are MINE, heathen!
Except when I forget.
Which won't happen this week.
I think.
What day is it again...?
-
k, my article is done for today. Post at will.
-
today is thursday. Get a move on it chump.
I'll consider you covering Monday, Prom.
-
wait, that won't work if the prerelease is this weekend.
ARGH.
Prom, is there ANY chance that in the future you could get the prerelease tactics articles in BEFORE the last minute? It would help a LOT.
sprig, do you mind if I usurp your spot and move you to Monday this once?
-
Nope
-
Prom, that means I need it TODAY. ASAP. Please!
-
I just submitted two Heroclix related articles that you may use when you wish, should you care to use them at all.
-
And one of them is very funny. We need to figure out a way to do it with out those <PRE> tags though, they stretch the text out too far.
-
See SE this is what you get when you postpone my article when I've actualy finished it :). No article at all.
And in regaurds to the <pre> tags. Lets just use tables for the dials. I'll just "Borrow" the dial table layout that Wizkids uses and put it in Kije's article.
-
I blame Prom. since, y'know, it's his fault.
-
EUOL, am I seeing something from you today? Prom, are you going to get that prerelease strategy in today?
-
Yeah it's coming. I've got a draft pretty much already finished, but I'm we're still 10 cards short and I'm hoping to get those last few commons to review. I'll have it out before 10 AM Mountain time though. Noon for you, I guess.
-
Article is in. We've been at 296/306 cards all morning. There's just not a point to waiting any more.
-
So, Sprig warned me that Pro would have something coming out today. I guess, with the prerelease being tomorrow and all, you kind of had to post it.
So, do you want a EUOLogy? Or are you just going to save it for next week?
-
Well, I posted the EUOLogy. Do with it as you wish!
-
I'll save it. If I can get one more, than I won't have to write reviews of these two books I've read. I have to move next weekend, so it would be nice to not feel like I have to write anything.
-
oh. i just proof read your EUOLogy, and uhm... made a comment or two. You refer to the place of Bask. I guess we'll have to finish up Kije's article on Bask from the TW(i)G setting and get it up this week.
Kije, I'll send you comments tonight. If I don't, find me and hit me with something large and blunt.
-
Ummm... Not sure what happened, but I proofed as well, and when I saved it, all the special characters and quote marks turned into gibberish. Help! All I did was change "full-proof" to "fool-proof." What'd I do?
-
And speaking of proofing, I'll catch up with the rest tomorrow morning, just so you know.
-
where did you edit it?
I'm assuming you copied it into Word or something like that. I'll just quote what I told prom:
That would be you using Word instead of a text editor. It likes to make "Smart quotes" which are only "smart" in the sense that they hurt.... I mean, in the sense that only Word seems to understand them. Text editors interpret them as other parts of the ASCII Set.
You can avoid this problem after editing it in Word by pasting it first to NotePad, then copying it all again and pasting it into the text box in the browser.
I fixed 'em. Also added his bio. I'm going to encourage everyone to leave it alone till next Friday.
-
Actually, no. I just hit the "edit" link, changed the word, and then hit "save." It's never happened before.
-
ah. Then, ghosts. Spirits. Gremlins. that sort of thing. Only logical explanation.
-
Meh, post Kije's other article. I couldn't get IK done and nothing else I wrote came out right.
-
I'm halfway through a book review, we'll see how the next little bit goes after I catch up on email then I'll either post or finish the review.
-
Um, are we ever going to do the "little people" day? If not, you've got a book review from me you could use anytime. That is, if you think it's a good review. And could you let me know if you don't?
-
I'm thinking not. Since Sprig doesn't answer questions about time.
-
out of articles. I hope to have another book review, but the game review probably won't happen soon. Frostburn is pretty dry.
-
Seriously, did you not receive the book review I sent you about a month ago?
-
apparently not. Did you email it? I'm like fell, stuff gets lost in my email. Send it through the system, and I'll see it. Probably post it tomorrow too.
-
Emailed. I'm at school right now, and it's on my laptop at home, so I won't be able to post it till after I get home from class tonight.
-
that's fine, I won't even look for it till tomorrow.
-
Well, I certainly don't know how to help. I could write something about college life today in the here and now, and some differences I've noticed going from a moderately large school, to a small school. I don't know. Just a suggestion. (I won't go into how EUOL that is.)
-
how about time wasting ideas for college students? Thats something that might be fun.
-
Evangelion 8 sitting in Movies.
I'm glad that's over....I may or may not review the four other discs I have. Likely No.
-
I've got so many reviews to write it's sickening. I'll see if I can get two done today, then a few more over the course of the week.
-
Civilisation: The Board Game review sitting in Other.
-
Beer Money Review sitting in CCG.
Yes, I double posted. After writing several articles in one day, I think I deserve a little postcount +1. I expect this to be the last review I write today, though we'll see how board I am in half an hour Chez Geek, and maybe even Shadowfist (Finally!) will be forthcoming.
Don't go and spend it all in one place, y'hear.
-
BTW, JP, when you submit those, they're automagically approved, since you're an admin. Make sure to mark them viewable by Mods Only when you do. Otherwise anyone who goes to the relevant section will see it before I post it.
-
I never read this thread (because it makes me feel guilty), and I'm too lazy to go back and read through it now. Has there been any mention of a Halloween Theme Week?
Similarly, I renew my suggestion that we need (1) a calendar of events and (2) theme week graphics would be neat.
-
no halloween week yet, but we should have one. I can re-edit back into the staff picks article we ran last year and add new favorite scary movies, if'n anyone wants. So, what other input do we have, then we can see if it'll be a week or just a day.
-
EUOL, we gonna see a column in time for me to post it in the morning?
-
I know Fell is working on a review for a Halloween themed board game, 'Betrayal at House on Haunted Hill' or something like that. It's a fun game.
-
SE,
Yes, you will. You'll at least see it by noon or so, probably earlier.
-
Oops. I usually do that, but I havn't submitted for so long, I forgot this time. Sorry.
-
Has there been any mention of a Halloween Theme Week?
Similarly, I renew my suggestion that we need (1) a calendar of events and (2) theme week graphics would be neat.
Ya there should be a halloween week, I was thinking of bringing that up today. I think we should change the clocks to pumpkins (like I suggested years ago) and maybe even change the color scheme.
I've also suggested to code up a calender system several times, but know one has been intrested in it. If it;s just going to be a simple HTML page then we need to be able to have easy access to it for updates, or I should since I'm the event cordinator.
Edit: made a thread about it here (http://www.timewastersguide.com/boards/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=suggestions;action=display;num=1096635289), lets move the disscussion over there since this thread is for normal articles.
-
Will there be an article today?
-
Yup. EUOLogy is going up right now.
-
k, i'm outta material.
-
Got tomorrow covered, and got an article I'll probably save for Halloween. Sprig, you got Thursday?
-
yep
-
Mr. P just sent a review my way. I'll get it to you today SE.
-
On top of the review I already sent to Sprig, I'm also working on these...which should be done in the next week or so...
1. Necessary Evil
2. Dragonmech
3. Warmachine - waiting for me back in the States
4. Warmachine Escalation - probably be done in the next month
-
y'know, Mr. P, you can submit articles directly here (http://www.timewastersguide.com/edit.php?page=articles)
-
Chez Geek in CCG. Can someone please make the boxout, a, y'know, boxout?
-
boxed out.
Yea CSS!
note: SE or JP, if you want to move the box, make sure you keep the text within the <div> tags then just place the whole thing where you want it to go in corilation to the other text. If you look at the style code you'll see where the width and placment code is.
-
Umm, I thought I was doing today's article? Oh well, you all will just have to wait a little longer for my SW mini article. If I can finaly finish IK I'll do 2 for next week.
-
uhm.. yeah. Today's thursday, in't it. Crud. Sorry totally lost track of my day's of the week.
Oh well. At least it's not monday. And eventually I'm sure I'll get the hang of this.
-
Ok. I just reread my review of equilibrium and whoever edited it screwed it up mildly. What I submitted read:
"The leaders reason that sacrificing love and joy is a small price to pay for ridding themselves of hate and anger."
What it says now is:
"The leaders' reason is that sacrificing love and joy is a small price to pay for ridding themselves of hate and anger."
In my version "reason" is used as a verb. Perhaps it's not as clear as it could be but I like my version better since the edited version has no clear antecedent.
Could it be corrected please?
-
fixed
-
Man, I am not doing well on the copyediting lately. Really, I'm normally better than this. Sorry about that. I should have just asked about the sentence, because it wasn't clear to me. And I must have just been out of it, because now it's plenty clear. Sorry sorry sorry.
-
Good heavens! Relax already! I only missed a job as a reviewer at a newspaper because that one sentence was kind of lame. No big deal. I'll just tell my wife NO on that medicine for our baby because I don't have a job yet. Easy fix.
-
think about passing on food and clothing for the children too. That really helps with the budgeting.
-
I'll have my article in by noon again, SE. I'm thinking review this week.
-
SE, the review is up.
-
Someone stuffed up the link to the EUOLogy. Close your tags, please.
Well, unless you INTENDED "Discuss it in our" to link to the article.
-
Wasn't me this time!
-
It was, infact, me!
/me runs off with the link under his arm
-
someone either fixed it or you're high. Either way, I win.
-
Yeah, me.
-
Every time I have used the submission system it hasn't worked. No one gets the article and I just end up sending it to Sprig.
The first two times were my first reviews and apparently the system had some kinks. The last time I was told it was fixed (and it had been over a year, I think) and I submitted the Warmachine review that was never recieved.
Every time someone has always said that the system was fixed just before I sent them and it never has been. So I'm a bit hesitant to use the submission system.
-
oh, well, we could do a test. Submit an article but just say "this is a test" and I'll tell you if I see it. We tend to lose the ones we get by email. Or at least, we forget about them.
-
I'll give 'er another go when I have my next submissions ready. I'm sure if it's working for everyone else, it's working for me now too ;D
-
Okay, I just submitted a review, hope you all got it!
-
And it went through without problem.
-
Wow, talk about turn-around.
Now, do you all have my Eberron Adventure article?
-
I have it, I did send a copy to SE, but I can allwayse submit it if needs be.
-
Ahh, just noticed you submitted it yourself Mr. P, so ya it's there.
-
So...we going to to a forum topic for the EUOLogy?
-
There is one...
-
I got yer stinkin' topic right here. (http://www.timewastersguide.com/boards/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=rpgs;action=display;num=1097844040)
-
There's no 'Discuss it in our forums' link on the blurb.
-
doh. I'll fix that.
Doh. I fixed that.
-
Np. After thinking for a sec, I realized that this column would go under the RPG section. Before that, I was looking for it under Everything Else and Rants, and couldn't find it--so I went to the article, which didn't have a link.
-
I'm out of articles. Someone get busy.
-
Roger, Roger.
I've got this week covered (assumeing EUOL gets friday done).
I'll have todays article posted soon (SW minis) and hopefuly tomorrows too (probaly a HC).
-
I'm submitting a review.
-
I'm a wild pig!
-
You might want to post Stacers reveiw today since my other article is another Tabeltop one, I'll just submit mine once I'm finished and you can use it next week sometime. For thursday I'm going to have Iron Kingoms done, and if I cannot finish the book I'll do a CoH review.
-
I'm still working on today's reveiw SE, so I'll let you know when it's done.
-
I'll be waiting. *drums fingers*
-
I don't think I'll have my article done anytime soon, I get the total joy and pleasure of driveing 42 and J.T. to the SLC airport in rush hour traffic.
-
I thought they were driving to Denver.
-
yeah, and they're robbing me of content. Jerks. Now I'll have to write a review or something. I finished a book recently. and I have some other stuff I guess I could whip out.
-
I'm working on that Charles de Lint novel for a review, but I'm not done reading it yet.
-
I just submitted a column.
-
EUOLogy is up!
Sorry, I was running just a bit late this morning.
-
EUOLogy blurbed!
-
No article for today?
-
uhm... yes.. I'm just a flake. I'm getting on that now.
-
I will have another book review by tomorrow.
-
Crap, I just remembered that this week is supposed to be our theme Week!
Lets say we go from this wensday through next wensday? Or maby just a few days this week?
42 is going to try and get a halloween theme for our colors and I'm going to make pumpkins to replace our clocks.
-
Halloween's coming people. I want to run Halloween themed or at least horror/scary themed material on Friday the 29th. Get your scary stuff submitted by the 28th.
If you don't want to do anything else, revise or make a new entry for the Staff Picks (http://www.timewastersguide.com/view.php?id=605) feature we ran last year.
I was going to do Halloween stuff on Friday. We dont' have articles for more Eric.
-
Eh, if I would have paid better attention I could have gotten some done.
Should I even bother getting the color and graphic changes done?
-
well, if you think it's worth it for one day...
-
The book review I'm working on is a dark YA fantasy that has the climax scene on Halloween. I could have the review to you late tonight or, at latest, tomorrow afternoon.
-
someone should review Bunnicula.
-
I'll do that for the EUOLogy, if you want, SE.
-
That would save me some work, and since I'm despressed and stressed lately, I'd be happy for it.
-
Did you know that it's the Bunnicula 25th anniversary this year? I just snapped up a copy of the anniversary edition the other day. Too bad it's here and you're there, but the text is the same, I'm sure. Here's Neil Gaimon's blurb from the back:
Twenty-five years is a long time for a worried cat, a bemused dog, a vampire bunny, and a fridge full of terrified vegetables. Luckily Bunnicula is the kind of story that does not age, and in all probability, will never die. Or stay dead, anyway...
Just thought that was funny. This one's funnier:
As a kid, I saw the classic movie Dracula and became instantly afraid of vampires. many years later, I read the classic children's book Bunnicula. Now--in addition to vampires--I am also afraid of bunnies. I hope you're happy, Jim.--Barbara Park
-
Ok, I'll have Iron Kingdoms submitted in the next 30-60 minutes. There will be a note at the bottom for you to read SE before you approve it since you'll probaly have to check some things.
-
I'll check it out. be nice to run that today so we can spread out the table top stuff.
-
That's why I finaly say myself down and finished it, I've been working on the review for a few days now (off and on). It'll probaly be quite a chore for Stacer to edit too since I kinda went comma crazy in a few places.
-
I do a preliminary edit, but I'm just not as careful as Stacer, so she gets all the non-obvious stuff.
-
I got nothing for today. But I have a bunch I can do. I'll try to get something done up by the end of lunch. will be tough though, I want to try and find a really cheap digital watch to go with my bathrobe for my Arthur Dent costume tomorrow.
And let this serve as final warning: Tomorrow is the day we run Halloween stuff. Get your material in.
-
The review I have is for Halloween. And it will be in today.
-
SE- I saw the preview of SAW last night and will have the review to you today. It will need to go up tomorrow, the opening day for the movie. I'll try and make sure it needs minimal editing by the time I send it to you.
-
sounds good and squishy. Remember, if you have a blurb you want to run, put it inside the article text and make sure it's marked as blurb material.
-
done. I included the blurb and the tagline in the same field as the text.
-
Book review in.
-
Skar, I made a major error. I was going to do all of today's articles in one big blurb like I do with most special events, but then changed my mind and was going to make them each their own blurb. Because I'm a moron who doesn't pay attention to what he's doing, I lost the blurb info you gave me. I recreated it the best I could, but if it needs fixing (rather, it DOES need fixing), feed me the text and I'll change it immediately. You can post here or email me at [email protected]
-
You might want to fix the front page a bit SE. EUOL's EUOLogy is attached to your Halloween special extravaganza.
-
Yeah, I had several errors when I first did all four of those blurbs. It comes from having a major cold, being drugged up, and constantly interrupted by phone calls. I think I have them all fixed though.
-
btw, I got nothing. Hope to have somthin, but we'll see.
-
I've got Thursday covered.
-
Today's article is up. It's a good thing I'm not a sissy NaNoWriMo person or there would never be any updates this month. ;)
-
"Yes, you're very smart. Now shut up."
No, seriously, thanks!
-
I've got three CCGs to review, so I'll do my best to get them out quickly. Maybe if my characters in my novel start reviewing CCGs, I can write both at the same time.
-
If you figure out how to make your characters do that let the rest of us know? I've got editing and housework that I'd just love to have my characters do so I did have to. :)
~J
-
Fell, you could always just do a NaNo blog, kind of like your UXB one.
-
I did my part. I just gave SE a review of Tears of the Sun. I rock.
-
woot! Thanks!
I'll run it tomorrow if EUOL doesn't give me a EUOLogy.
Thanks for the support guys.
-
I thought about a NaNo blog, but the idea of writing 2200-2500 words per day and then writing an article about what I wrote that day drove me momentarily insane. I might blog some of this CCG stuff, though, like learning the rules and building a deck, etc.
-
I'm going to have to compare certain writers to comics publishing house. Brandon is like DC comics. Huge name, dependable delivery.
Sprig is like Marvel: interesting, creative content, but sometimes some bad printing and not always on time.
Fell is like Dark Horse: A bunch of limited series.
-
So who gets to be Stan Lee?
-
That would be the person whose creations you stole and now make lots of money from and don't compensate. I'm thinking ENtropy is a good choice.
-
Am I those creations?
-
no, you're morelike the creations by Image and McFarlane: deeply disturbing.
-
EUOLogy is up.
It's actually number ten--we had two number eights. I went back and fixed last week's title.
-
This is the post where I request a column.
I'd like to do a column on gaming life meeting real life and all the fun that comes from it. On top of that, I'm pretty plugged into new releases and what's happening in the rpg and mini game industry amongst other things.
What say you, lords of TWG?
-
While we're at it, can I have an ivory tower?
-
I still want a column, just so I can call it "Jam Session."
Because, y'know, it's such an awesome name.
-
I have no problem with columns. Here's my thing though, I *need* to *know* that you will contribute regularly. That's why I don't do a column. I write a lot, but I can't count on myself to get a weekly column up.
And, of course, I'm not the final word on it. I have input, but it's not my site.
-
Coloums are fine as long as they're regular. They don't have to be weekly though, if you want to do a monthly coloum or a bi-monthly coloum I think that would be acceptable as well.
edit: If you want your bio on the current article you just submitted post it here and I'll add it for you.
-
I think a column would be great, provided we could count on it consistently.
-
Or if you want, a Series, which would be like a multiple part article, so you could do a weekly column of sorts but with the idea that it would have a limited run. Then if you want to start a new series you can.
-
I know I could contribute biweekly at least. That would be easy as pie.
-
Ok, I've got Thursday's article started so it'll be finished by tomorrow. Which leads me to this, if you need an article for tomorrow you can run it Wendsay and I'll come up with another article for Thursday.
-
with EUOLogy and that one, and the one JP is about to submit, the week is covered. Let's start working on next week.
-
Hum, didn't hear about JP's article, but I haven't been on AIM/MSN much this week.
-
I know I could contribute biweekly at least. That would be easy as pie.
Sounds good to me, but it's not my call. SE's the man to get the official go ahead for a regular column
-
I'd be very interested in reviewing anything.
-
Then pick something you like and reveiw it, I realy dosen't matter what it is. I'll be happy to read over your first reivew and offer suggestions if you think you need them.
-
New EUOLogy is up. Early even!
-
yay! it'll be posted in the next hour and a half or so.
-
I posted a review. Use it at your discretion. I'm working on at least one more for this week, and possibly a series of LotR CCG stuff for next week (to commemorate the RotK extended edition).
-
It'll go today. I was going to review Frostburn, but I feel like dying. so I'll do mine on wednesday.
-
Another glowing review from Fellfrosch, ready to go. I'll start on RotK now, but be warned, it's going to glow as well.
-
It'll go today. I was going to review Frostburn, but I feel like dying. so I'll do mine on wednesday.
I feal your pain, I'm reading Serpent Kingdoms for tomorrow and every time I start reading it I want to gouge my eyes out.
-
Sprig, I took that last post to mean you'd have something today. Do I err in that assumption?
-
The LotR review is posted; not as much glow as I expected, once I gathered my thoughts, but there's still a bit. Can we post it Monday or Tuesday?
-
Hey, SE, I'm almost done with my review of "The Life Aquatic" It opens in NY and LA tomorrow and so we could post the review then if we wanted to. I think any time before the 25th, (the widespread opening) would be good though. But, since I had a chance to see it so early, I think we should take advantage and post it a little bit before the actual opening day, say the 20th.
What think ye?
-
Not Saint, but yes that Rocks!!!! I Really Reaaly want to see this movie.
/me mutters to himself..."How does he see such wonderful shows!"
-
You too could see such wonderful shows. The tricky bit is getting on the press lists of the distribution companies in your area. Once you're on they'll send you invites to press screenings and promo screenings. It was probably easier for me to get on such lists considering where I live than it will be for you (D.C.?) but hey, it's worth a shot if you're interested.
Facts:
-Big distribution companies farm out to smaller local companies. The smaller companies are those whose list you want to be on.
-The TWG was enough of an entity to get me on several of those lists in my area with more in the offing.
-All I sent them was a short email describing (briefly) our site with a request to be put on their press lists.
-You should be able to figure out who the distribution companies in your area are through research or through shmoozing a reviewer into giving you the contact emails in his possession.
If you're interested it would be great to have another movie reviewer.
-
It would be nice to have that kind of freetime, but the truth is I work most nights... making tickets like that a liability...
Still prerelease screening would be fun...
-
Not really tickets, they just let you know when and where it's happening, you show up, and they check your name off a list. Go or not as you can, they don't care. At least that's how it works out here in Utah.
I also made myself a press card with my name, Movie Editor and the TWG logo on it. Feel free to make your own, if anyone asks I empower you to do so, as the official movie editor for TWG. ;D
-
SE-
The Life Aquatic Review is in. I tried to include the relevant HTML but I'm sure it could use an edit.
-
I'll check it out. I think Fell's review will go monday, and I'll cover wednesday with either Frostburn or Burger Tech. The 20th is an excellent day to run the Life Aquatic. I'll run which ever review I do that doesn't go on the 15th on the 22nd. Which means, if Sprig, Mr. P, and EUOL all cover their respective days, we have our content all planned until Christmas. With a little work, we could have the content for the rest of the year planned out.
-
Two choices for EUOLogy today. I have to take off for a school meeting that I'd forgotten about until recently. So, you can either post my Ken Jennings rant off of my website, or you can wait for me to get home and finish up my rant about arrogance. The Ken rant is nice, but kind of short and a bit over-written. If you post it, however, I'll finish this other one up for next week. It could be a couple of hours until I get this one finished.
Anyway, do as you please.
-
well, it's growing late. And since I don't have Internet connectivity at home right now (and we're celebrating my birthday) I don't want to gamble that you'll have it done before I leave work. I'll steal the Ken Jennings bit.
-
ok, I ran yours today Sprig. If you're not going to have one done by tomorrow (i don't expect you to, but if you do, that'd be great) so I'm going to make sure mine is in. I was hoping it'd be done today, but it's not so.... Yeah.
-
Dono if I will or not. I wasn't planning on it since you didn't use mine on Monady (I forgot about JP's reveiw). If I don't have anything submitted by 8am your time then assume there won't be anything.
-
will do. I'm going to have something written before bed tonight, so we should be covered.
-
Good, I'll just take it as us 'switching' days since the 2 things I have to review are SW mini things, and I'd actualy like to play them before doing a review.
-
New EUOLogy is up.
-
I wrote a review of the D&D history book, Thirty Years of Adventure. I just need to do some last little fact checks (to make sure I remember the names, etc.) and then I'll post it.
-
What do you guys want to see today? A review of the latest Drizzt trilogy? The updated D&D Adventure game? The Complete Arcane? Or the latest Ninja Burger Supplement? Let me know soon or I'll choose one at random.
-
Did you see the review I posted last night? Or are you just saving it for later?
-
oh, I forgot to look at the admin page. I just looked at the approval page. No, I'll do yours today so I don't have to write one quickly. But please, feel free to vote about what you'll see on Wednesday.
-
Complete Arcane, hands down. Then I won't have to do it.
-
btw, today's article is late because work is a little bit busier than it was yesterday. I can run a review we have in, but we just did a book review from Fell yesterday, and besides, I have tons of crap to review, I just need to write it. Expect it by the end of my lunch break (hopefully)
-
I know you've already got an article from me in the backlog, but I just posted an RPG review. Yay for a job where I can write non-job stuff!
-
Yay for a job where I can write non-job stuff!
I just applied for a job at the children's book shop down the street, and I may be saying the same thing soon. Most of the time when I walk in, the girls in the shop are reading. That'd be so ideal.
-
I usually have time to write here, but I often end up reading the archives of webcomics instead. I need to find a way to discipline myself about that.
-
soo..... I ran a book review today because EUOL hasn't even shown up to tell me if there will be a EUOLogy today.
-
I'd better write some reviews over the weekend, then, if you're out of Fell stuff.
-
you and me both.
-
I should have a Prerelease Tactics article tomorrow for Betrayers of Kamigawa. As is typical, the rumors site still has incomplete information, so I expect the article to be delayed until around noon Eastern on Friday.
Keep an eye out for it so it can be posted alongside anything else we're running tomorrow?
