I'm at my in-laws, on my own computer, fixing their network. Before AS tonight, I will be back on my poopy dialup

The internet companies should provide therapy for those who have to transition from broad band to dial-up.

The internet companies should give moneteary compensation to those who are out of the range of broadband... like me... I could use money...

You deserve commendations.  The last time I had to go to dial-up for an extended period of time, I pretty much just ended up taking a break from the interenet too.  I couldn't take it.

I am thankful to be married to someone who is as dependant on broadband as I am.  Which means it's one of the first things we get set up whenever we move.

Same here, Fuzzy.  I have a feeling that Chris will insist that broadband internet will be one of the first things we set up no matter where we are or how broke we are.  Which is nice, because I like my internet!

I got it as soon as I could here. Which, unfortunately, involved getting a DSL modem from one company, which after a week of trying to get it to work told me that the phone company told them I was too far away. And when I asked the phone company myself, they were willing to offer me only 384/128. Come on! I'm only 4.5 km from the CO, the same as I was in Japan, and there I got actual DSL speeds of 800/800.

I eventually got Adelphia Cable even though it had so many bad reviews. And beyond some packet loss problems the first weekend, it's been smooth sailing ever since. And the wireless router I bought in Japan and brought back works just great, better than the linksys or netgear ones I bought in the US previously (both of those disconnected if I tried to send files on irc, and yes, I had all the ports configured correctly).

Adelphia gives me actual speeds of 2400/256. (Man, that 800 upload in Japan was NICE.)

problem: Broadband is more expensive. That is the whole of the problem. It's not that it's unavailable (anymore) or problematic. it's that it costs 5-6 times as much as the dialup I'm using. I don't have the budget for it.

Yeah, for me here its not available. The company's are jerks (want to use different words) since I live on a dead end road. Me and my dad have called them many times and asked them and they said things along the lines of "Oh, it isn't available there yet."

Huh, when we call they go, "It isn't available to, will never be available to you, and stop calling us and ordering 20 pepporoni pizzas"...
