Title: TWG Forum Trivia
Post by: Mr_Pleasington on December 01, 2005, 03:07:58 AM
With all the new people posting, it dawned on me just how long I've been a member here.  It's had to be three or four years now.  You'd think that strange considering the only person on the forum I've actually met was JP.

So let's post some TWG forum trivia for the new folks.

Or something.

I'll start.

1.  My sig is from a long-defunct superhero play-by-post forum game.  Fell was the GM and it was set in high-school.  Sprig's quote comes from the fact that his character was the only one with a low charisma.  The humor comes from the classic Sprig typo.

2. There was a time, long ago, when I was in the top 5 posters here.  This was before SE and Jeffe started their post-run and before the writing group started.  Back, when there weren't any females around too, I think.

Just some random memories.

Actually, no it's not.

"trivia"

n : something of small importance [syn: triviality, trifle, small beer]

Yes, but most often in today's society, unless specified by 'trivial' or things like unto it, it carries the connotation of being a question. Consider it slanged.

TRIVIA

This is the 3rd version of the website with the first being really ugly and green.

This the the second forum.

Tage's secret identity is Jimmy.

here's the formula for determining your life in the forum game :

playerBaseHP=toughness*10+endurance*5+strength*1+Mental Fortitude*10;

And this is Flash Fell (http://www.legacieslost.com/flash/movies/dan5.html)

Dr P has actually only been around like 2 years or something. I remember when he joined :P

Trivia: SE is a smelly dog.

Trivia: Me and SE once statted up the ninja monkies.

Trivia: When I joined I was a hapless newb, but there wasn't any policing so I got away with it. I didn't use capitals - if you look way back in the tabletop section you can see some of my attempts at paragraphs back when I first joined.

Trivia: The first time I slammed a newbie down, Tage told me to stop. My defense? 'He shouldn't have said fallout 2 wasn't a good game'. :D

I thought Fuzzy came after me.  No.  I don't remember.

And I've been around for longer than 2 years...it's been at least 3 if not 4.  I met my wife 2 years ago and I can still remember the post about internet dating I put up here.

Let's see...here's my first review...

Dated 11/02.  And I know I was here at least a few months, if not longer, before I submitted a review.

Fact: Mr. P registered on Jul 29th, 2002, 12:10am. He's been around over 3 years.

Fact: Entropy registered on May 24th, 2002, 3:20pm. He's only been around 2 months longer than Mr. P

Fact: I was the 7th or 8th person to register on this forum. But I promptly forgot my login and ignored the site for 2 years or so, only sending my articles to Fell every now and then. I started lurking again in January-ish of 2003. and de-lurked a month later.

Fact: the Fell flash animation is from the infamous AORP game I ran. I came up with the Grey Knight concept, though EUOL made it his. I take no responsibility whatsoever for Sir Carl.

Fact: AORP is also why i'm often referred to as SE.

My picture comes from Piers Anthony's Apprentice Adept series. The black unicorn's name is Neysa. I always pronounced it like my nickname, Nessa, although that may not be the pronounciation Mr. Anthony intended.

That is why I use that picture.

1. SE stands for Saint Ehlers, which is one of the many fictional saints created by Brother John--the con artist priest character I played in AORP.

2. AORP is older than TWG, but eventually merged with TWG.

3. TWG started as an article written for the Leading Edge (http://www.leadingedgemagazine.com/) Issue 41 April 2001.

Trivia: TWG sprang forth Athenastically from TLE, as has been mentioned; the originator of the concept was Skar, for which he shall always be remembered as a genius.

Trivia: EUOL is pronounced "yool," and stands for Evil Undead Overlord.

Trivia: Tage has used that nickname for every Final Fantasy character he's ever created. It is only since AORP, in fact, that he stopped using Tage in every video game and started using Cadamis instead.

Trivia: House_of_Mustard has never seen a pie he didn't like.

Trivia: Entropy came to TWG because of our heavy Games Workshop focus. He used to complain when that focus disappeared, but now I think he's given up hope.

Alright, here's some historical trivia for you.

Trivia: This site is not, in fact, the third version of timewastersguide.com. The first was the green monster, seen here:
http://web.archive.org/web/20010720190749/http://www.timewastersguide.com/
I believe this site was coded by Fell himself, using plain HTML. Who says he can't code?

The second version of the site was very similar (static pages updated by hand) but had the brown clock theme done by the amazing Jeff Creer (42).

The third version of the site was actually created with PHP-Nuke (http://www.phpnuke.org/). This was the first version of the site with a dynamic backend, using PHP and MySQL. PHP-Nuke turned out to be not quite right for our needs, though, so I coded the current version up when I had free time at work. (That particular summer I had a LOT of free time at work.)

I don't think we counted the middle version as a new version simply because it was just a graphics overhaul.  It did, however, have a cute little javascript clock that told you what time it was.

We have also attempted, at some point, to have a clock that would tell you how much time you'd wasted browsing the site.

Frankly, I'm glad that we don't have that easy access to such incriminating evidence.
Title: Re: TWG Forum Trivia
Post by: Tage on December 01, 2005, 02:56:23 PM
Also, since Fell brought it up...

Trivia: I've been using Tage as a nick since I was 16. Tage and Cadamis are the only two nicknames I have that weren't given to me by Fell.

Trivia: Fell has notoriously avoided a good nickname all his life, despite constantly coming up with them for other people. "Fellfrosch" is the name of a Rammstein song, and it means "dire frog" in German.

Trivia: Fell was 6 and I was 5, he convinced me to run away from home.  I swear I had no idea that we'd get in trouble, because I had (and continue to have) complete faith in every word he says.

Trivia: My wife was the third female to register, and has never posted once.

Fact:

Both Mr. P and Entropy were registered before we switched to this current forum so they've re-registered like everyone else and the dates don't reflect the time before that switch.

Fact:

Entropy was one of the first, if not the first, non-Utah/Mormon TWG forum member and has been around for about 4 years or so.

Title: Re: TWG Forum Trivia
Post by: Skar on December 01, 2005, 06:32:01 PM
Fact: Skar germinated the idea for an article entitled "The Time Waster's Guide" for TLE issue 41 with the sole purpose in mind of getting hold of Diablo 2 for free.  It worked.  They sent him a review copy in exchange for the article, on spec.  Later they also sent him the Expansion Pack.

Months or years (some time) after that he discovered to his great surprise and satisfaction that Fell and others had run with the concept, created a website by the same name, and were harvesting free stuff galore from all sorts of game companies.

Now he just screens the occasional movie, for free.  Ha Ha!

Okay, trivia...let's see.

HoM was the first person on the forums to get published and paid a professional wage for his fiction.

The TWG started as a website, in part, because Fell (with some of the rest of us) felt sad having to leave The Leading Edge, a sf/f magazine on BYU campus, behind and move on with our lives.

The forum names and titles were designed by Fell and myself.  Which reminds me.  Tage, now that I've moved to a different computer, my version of smartftp no longer has the login/username memorized, so I can't update forum titles or put people in the corner any more.  Could you email me the login info?

Fact: I registered long, long ago, but then my account got all screwed up, so I had to delete it and re-register. Tage then (after deletion) told me he could have fixed it for me had I said something. So I've been around far longer than my registration implies. I think I was even on the first page of members, or at least right at the top of the second page. :(

But also...

Superfly is a designation for the aimless threads of talk inspired by my insomnia and bizarre posting habits when I worked the 10pm to 6 am shift here at the NRC. The idea is to emulate AIM or Yahoo messenger by going with a stream of rapidfire posts. Yes it sort of violates the FAQ. Yes, via finger-snapping. I'm like a Godfather: I tell Tage to handle something for me and he does, and the less I know about his methods the better.

That's funny--I was asking EUOL, but you must have posted at the same time as me. I thought it was EUOL who did your finger-snapping bidding. Not that I was paying very close attention, so it could have been the ninja monkeys, for all I know.

There must be repurcussions for such statements.

What a holly jolly idea. :D I was just wondering about that, actually. Let's see, from henceforth until 2006 is upon us, I think I'll be... 8 Flying Shraindeer.

Aww, why does everyone else have names that can be easily adapted for Chrismas

Edit: Actually, never mind, I hadn't seen the names like "on the twelfth day of mustard" and "christmas e", so I guess you don't really need an adaptable name to think up a good cristmas one (though, how good is "chrismas e")

Christmasy, Christmas Eve, etc.

I was Stacer the Reindeer last year, which wasn't very good. I need a good one this year, and e (or should I say, Christmas e) couldn't think of one either. Not that I've thought too hard. But suggestions welcome.

Edit: I figured it out.

Scroll all the way down to the bottom and look on the left while you are in a thread and you should see it. Right now it says:

Currently in the corner for being too "snappy": Fellfrosch

I didn't even know we had a corner.

Well, I doubt I'll ever get put there. I'm much too cute and cuddly. (Let's see if reverse pyschology really works ;))

You seem entirely too natural at that form of 'writing' for you not to have lots of experiance in it.

Also the laguage thing isn't true. Look on page 12 or 13 of the Advice thread and you will see a post that lays this theory to rest.

You know, if you annoy the admins enough, they'll bypass the corner and go straight to erasing your profile. Or sending the ninja monkeys. Or something like that.

Actually, there were plans for a "Student of Annoying the Admins" class.  The idea was that if you annoyed us enough, we'd change your profile to that class (it wasn't one you could pick.)  Then, the class titles would all be embarrassing and/or stupid things.

Actually, ninja monkeys are pretty much a first response. We rarely wait till we're terribly annoyed to employ them.
