Writing Group / Writers speaking out on writing
« on: May 02, 2006, 11:06:36 PM »
Forgive me if there was an earlier thread like this, but I thought it'd be neat to collect a bunch of quotes from various famous writers about the act of writing.  Inspirational stuff when you're feeling blue about your own writing. :)

One that I particularly like.

"I began to realize how simple life could be if one had a regular routine to follow with fixed hours and a fixed salary and very little original thinking to do.  The life of a writer is absolute hell compared to the life of a businessman.  The writer has to force himself to work.  He has to make his own hours and if he doesn't go to his desk at all there is nobody to scold him.  If he is a writer of fiction he lives in a world of fear.  Each new day demands new ideas and he can never be sure whether he is going to come up with them or not.  Two hours of writing leaves this particular writer absolutely drained.  For those two hours he has been miles away, he has been somewhere else, in a different place with totally different people, and the effort of swimming back into normal surroundings is very great.  It is almost a shock.  The writer walks out of his workroom in a daze.  He wants a drink.  He needs it.  It happens to be a fact that nearly every writer of fiction in the world drinks more whisky than is good for him.  He does it to give himself faith, hope and courage.  A person is a fool to become a writer.  His only compensation is absolute freedom.  He has no master except his own soul, and that, I am sure, is why he does it."

Video Games / Which Videogame RPG Villain are you?
« on: April 06, 2006, 11:28:17 AM »
So my friends are into really random online quizes so I figured I'd make one of my own.  Thus I'm presenting the Rainbow Despair "Which Videogame RPG Villain are you?" quiz showcasing 6 of the most memorable RPG villains in console history.

Try to see how many of them you can guess just by looking at the questions. :)

Writing Group / The new face of Krystal Unbalanced
« on: April 06, 2006, 03:01:24 AM »
So I've decided to take my old Krystal Unbalanced characters and completely change the story around.  Here's the new set-up.

The Setting: The world of the Undead
The characters: A plucky young sand demon female & her fire demon cat partner
The plot: The two protagonists are just trying to make a buck (or a soul that is) through their bounty hunting business, but they get caught up in a conspiracy that could shake the very foundations of the underworld.
The genre:  Comedy/Cyberpunk/Dark Fantasy

Although I'll continue to write in my simple YA style, I think I'll try to sell it to a mainstream fantasy publisher since the themes will be more appropriate for an adult audience (though I'm sure some youngsters will get a kick out of it as well).

Unfortunately, I'm not sure that I can keep the old name of Krystal Unbalanced.  I mean, my earlier thought of having the main character be unbalanced in some way isn't what I want to do anymore.  Plus I'm thinking of renaming the character Molly just because it's the name that's in my head with her character and it's such a non-fantasy sounding name.  Now, I might figure out some way to keep the old name, but I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas for new names I might try.  And yeah, I know I'm not giving you all very much information to work with here.

EDIT: I'm thinking of "Molly UnLiving."  Thoughts?

EDIT2:  As a joke, I find "The Morte of Molly" to be amusing.

Video Games / Persona 3 - Pictures & Movies
« on: March 08, 2006, 09:58:02 PM »
Almost 5 years after the last game came out in the US, Atlus has announced a new game in the Persona:Be Your True Mind series.  For those unfamiliar with the series, it's a very trippy RPG series set in modern day Japan involving individuals with the ability to summon alter-ego mythological deities - kind of a fusion between cyberpunk & fantasy.  The series is well known for having interesting mature storylines and having complex gameplay with battlefield negotiations and deep magic systems.

The game is scheduled to come out in Japan on July 13th of this year for the PS2.  No US date has been announced yet, but I imagine that Atlus will release it in the US in time for Christmas of this year.

Images speak louder than words so here are some big scans for the game: http://www.jeux-france.com/news14853_persona-3-premieres-images.html

And here's a whopping big high-quality 17 and a half minute trailer for the game.  I highly recommend checking it out.  It goes back and forth between anime scenes and actual gameplay footage and is most intriguing.  The first couple minutes are very trippy.  Looks like this could be the most controversial game in the series yet (just look at how they summon their alter-egos).

The link for the movie isn't displaying correctly so you'll have to manually fix it - remove the space at the end between up and 17440.zip & it ought to work.
