Fell, what sort of system do you have?
and what do you theorize made it so laggy?

I have a fairly good system, well above the minimum requirements and hovering at or above the recommended requirements. I've since gone to some other review sites and found that they had similar lag problems even on machines that far exceeded the recommended requirements. My guess is that the code itself is stupid.
