I'm starting up this tread as a place for people to post legal free mp3s on the net.
RULES OF THE THREAD:
1) No posting illegal MP3s! If one is found that post will either be edited or delated. You've been warned people. No exceptions.
2) Keep chatter down to a minamum. This should be a place to easly find MP3s with out haveing to sort through pages of talking.

Amazon!
Tons of legal free music here, though most of it is a few years old.

There is no such thing as FREE anymore.
Possibly shared, but never FREE!

Some ookla mp3s, including the entire first album ("tape") recorded in their basement or whatever, and 3 song versions not available on any CDs.

This afternoon Jeffe pointed me to the Internet Archive (http://www4.archive.org/) where there's a lot of legal free stuff. Including a pile of Grateful Dead concerts.

Here's some Brianiac mp3s
http://www.epitonic.com/artists/brainiac.html
Epitonic is full of all legal mp3s. Not all bands you've never heard of either.
For example, here's a bunch of Death Cab for Cutie.
http://www.epitonic.com/artists/deathcabforcutie.html
-
And that's supposed to be an example of a band I've not never heard of?
-
Hey, it's not my fault if you've never heard of the kinds of bands I think you've not never heard of.
;D
(Four negatives in one sentence; who'll give me five?)
-
It's not that you don't not have anything we already haven't had the chance to fully understand as well as we wish we weren't doing something that awful or so unuseful that hasn't given us the knowledge to not do what we aren't going to do not.
How... many, is that... I sort of lost myself after haven't...
-
Gemm, you don't not havn't got no wrong idea about not never using none of no incorrect negative words that aren't not never used in no sentance, because if you didn't not never understand no ideas, then you wouldn't not never not be unable to beat me in no contest to not never understand this unsentance.

Ok, I think he wins.

My sister (she's actually very good. Her album, which should hopefully come out very soon, will have four tracks featuring the Prague orchestra):
www.aprilmeservy.com
EDIT (to reduce space, see below):
A lot of her best stuff isn't there, but I'd agree with Chimera - Decide is extremely good.
She's doing a new version of it on her upcoming album, and that's one of the tracks that will feature the Prague orchestra. Sam Cardon's been helping her out with this, and I'll be very interested in hearing how it comes out.
-
Thanks for the link, JadeKnight. I downloaded her songs. She's pretty good--I think I liked "Decide" the best.

a nice classical soundtrack from the Sierra game Arcanum...

sweet find Jeffe I love that game. It's sad Trokia went down I was hopeing for a sequal sometime.
-
yeah it was very cool.

Don Davis, the composer of the matrix movies and more importantly Behind Enemy Lines has free MP3s on his site.
http://dondavis.filmmusic.com/audio.html
I found this because you cannot find the Behind Enemy Lines Soundtrack for sale any where (not even amazon has it) and he's got 10 tracks on his site. It's a good start, one of these days I'll find it on e-bay.

The British ISP Playlouder MSP has made a deal with BMG and a few other indie labels to give this perk to all of its subscribers:
Download any BMG song however you like, whatever format/way you like, from whoever you like. It's in the subscription price. It's legal, and the artists get paid.
EDIT (in response to what's below, for space's sake):
Naturally.
However, I expect others to follow suit in the near future (next few years).
-
Too bad that's only legal if you:
1) Live in Brittan
2) Subsribe to that ISP service.

www.freeirishmusic.com
You couldn't really ask for much better.
I'd highly recommend The Stonering song "The Haughs of Cromdale" which is featured this month.
And while we're at it:
http://www.greenlinnet.com/listen/mp3s.htm
Green Linnet publishes a lot of good Celtic music, and several mp3s are available to download.

www.magnatune.com ("we are not evil")
Not exactly "free mp3s", but it comes close [Free music, optionally free mp3s]. Every single song/album they offer can be streamed to listen (the full song, high quality). These are actually .m3u files that link to mp3s you could download, too, without too much effort. [And I just discovered all of the songs there are under CC licenses, so you're okay to copy and share them.]
From the main page:
"If you like what you hear, download an album for as little as $5 (you pick the price), or buy a real CD, or license our music for commercial use. And no copy protection (DRM), ever.
"Artists keep half of every purchase. And unlike most record labels, they keep all the rights to their music.
"No major label connections.
"We are not evil."
Right now I'm enjoying some excellent Baroque lute music.
