Title: Drive
Post by: Peter Ahlstrom on April 18, 2007, 03:38:21 AM
Did anyone check this out? We watched the 3rd episode on Monday, then went and watched the 2-hour pilot on fox's website. It was fairly entertaining, and it's got Nathan Fillion, which is a good thing. The highway scenes are a bit repetitive though, since they're all filmed on the same unopened stretch of Interstate 210 here in California, and sometimes the scenery is so obviously California rather than Florida or wherever they're supposed to be. Also, the 2 car pool lanes of the freeway are really obvious, but how common is that across the U.S.?

I have nothing but good to say about Fox's online player though. It's way better than NBC's, CBS's, or ABC's. Fox's is the only one that doesn't stutter or lose its connection. And it doesn't have commercials.

What? Really? The Myspace player my roommate gave me a link to has commercials, I thought--though I could be wrong because I haven't gone over there yet. I thought she'd said it does. Did you watch it on Fox's website directly or on Myspace? I haven't gotten around to watching it yet.

It was something like myspace.com/driveonfox ...and it had no commercials. There were 3-second black spaces where a commercial was obviously supposed to be...maybe they just didn't play on my mac? *shrug*

And the only banner ad was one promoting other fox shows on myspace. But I had my monitor resolution at 800 x 500 so the show took up pretty much the whole screen, and the banner ad was scrolled off the top so it wasn't distracting me during the show.

Well, as people who are paying attention have heard, this got canceled after its second week—after the 4th hour. So that's the 2nd show this season that we started watching that got canned early. Ugh.

Well, that's funny, I was just thinking yesterday that I ought to go check it out. Guess I won't now.

If those four hours alone were worth spending four hours of your life on, I would still recommend it, but actually they aren't (they're only good enough if you add the promise of more), so I won't.

After the immense ad campaign they gave this thing, I'm amazed they killed it so quickly. Shows like this are intended to build a following, yet Drive was never in the same day or time two weeks in a row, and thus never even had a chance. It's almost like they killed it before it even aired--but then why sink all that money into the ads? I don't get it.

Because no one watched it, if you just spent all that money promoting a show and the saw the returns were horrible you'd pull the plug too.

I didn't watch it myself so I don't know if it was good or not but the promotion did nothing to make me want to watch Drive, in fact the first time I saw anything about I said "It's going to bomb" because the show just looked stupid.
