Well, it happened.
Some employer out there likes me.
Went out of her way to be nice to me, in fact, and bent over backward to get me on board.
Which amounts to waiting 4 weeks (TTC asks 4 weeks notice, not 2), and giving me not the $7000 raise they originally offered, but the $11000 I needed to make it worth it (also meaning my wife can quit her job). I will have my own office. I will have fewer vacation days for a couple years, but that'll clear up.
I will be working at Hunter Labs, doing first line tech support for color measuring equipment. Sounds fun, though obscure. Where do you move too with experience troubleshooting color measuring equipment? I dunno, but the hours are a heckuva lot better than where I'm at, and there are no sales. I can take night classes or a lot of other things.
I also hope to start selling fiction soon (soon as in the next 3-4 years), so that income will eventually, in 10 or so years, be where I'd move to. We'll see where fate takes us.
I have no idea what my Internet presence will be at this job. Maybe I'll be on more, maybe less. Maybe I can write at work, maybe not. But for sure I'll have a lot more evening free and I'll be able to be a social animal again.
So anyway, life's good.

Congrats, it sounds good! A question though, what exactly is colour measuring equipment used for?
-
Whoa, you've never seen One Hour Photo have you? Well, it's used to KILL PEOPLE! Hehehe. !
-
Gemm, when you start discussing Killing people, I break out into a sweat and move closer to the edge of my seat. I then start wringing my hands, grinding my teeth and looking side to side like the face at the bottom of the screen in the game Doom.
Then I remember the anonymity of the internet, and I calm down again.
Then I remember I told you roughly where I live.

Congratulations! I always thought you were working ungodly hours, what with saturdays and all, and more money makes everyone, including the RPG industry, happy. Hopefully this will allow you to spend more time with the girls. :)

measuring color.
No seriously. A lot of people apparently take that very seriously. Paper manufacturers, label makers, printers, textile manufacturers, clothiers, food industry.
Even that little black brushy strip thingy inside the window well in your car? Yeah, the people who make that stuff are for some unknown reason REALLY strict about the color.
Basically, it's quality control. When you make a shirt, a lot of time the pieces come from different bolts of material, but those pieces have to have no color difference distinguishable to the human eye, so they measure the color to make sure. That sort of thing.

yeah, the saturdays are a HUGE deal. The new salary is a raise over my old income, even WITHOUT all the overtime I've been busting my hump at. so less work + more money = nicey nicey.

Congrats Saint!! Great news. :)
-
Congrats. Must be a big relief.
-
Speaking as one who just got to quite a badly timed job (night audit) in favor of a much better one (teaching English) I have to say I know how it feels. Congrats!
-
Congrats SE! And I for one take color measuring very seriously. Nothing is more annoying and potential money losing than having you product's color screwed up.
-
Yeah, color accuracy was a huge deal in my old job. Speaking of which...I still need one. But a local company has all but offered me a job, so we'll have to wait and see.
-
gl w/ that fell.
If you need it, my current place is hiring :D
-
Congrats! Nice jobs are good to have. :)

EUOL, does this mean you no longer follow an evil sleep schedule?
-
I follow the most evil of them all--a completly normal one. Well, I do stay up a bit late still. I usually sleep from about 2 until 10.
