We have finally got a title:
"On Second Thought..."
Yeah. Whatever.
And the release date has been bumped up to February - the audio will come out at the same time.
-
eh. It doesn't say much. I can't remember your old title, but I think it was more amusing. Anyway, you're being published, so "YAY!" When are YOU buying us all lunch?
-
Unfortunately, he already did. You and I were not included, title suggestions not withstanding.
Congrats HoM! That's great news. Though I feel just as neutral as you about the title, it would, at least get me to pick up the book and look at the back.
-
Cool, Mustard. We'll have to organize a big "first day purchase campaign" to make sure the bookstores make some healthy reorders.
-
For those keeping track at home: Tonight I cut seven thouand words. Eight thousand more to go. The sad thing is that I cut everything that wasn't vital.
Oh well, I guess people that are too lazy to read the book shouldn't be offended by a choppy, disjointed story.
-
HoM didn't buy anyone dinner--he just had a party. You see, he didn't get an advance for his novel (because Covenant is cheap) nor was he foolish enough to promise his writing groups he'd buy them a meal when he got published.
-
???
Well I know this forum is more about HoM's title but I am just starting a new book and well it has no title. Some of you who were in my writing group a long time ago may remember a chapter I wrote about a little boy names Koshin who just happend to be the son of the High priestess of a religion that dominated a vaguely asian empire, it was the one with the tea.
Well I need a title for this new book. I know most of you don't know anything about it and those who read the first chapter years ago well a lot has changed.
But the current title is just Koshin
pononced like
'ko' from coke
'shi' is like she (the female pronoun)
and the 'n' is well like any other n
Just start sending titles who know maybe one of you will get inspired. I know as much about this new book as any one and I have no idea what to call it so clearly knowledge of the book in not the decideding actor in knowing what to name it.
-
The Terrors of Tea ;D
Actually Koshin is a perfectly acceptable title.
I'm not really coming up with anything serious:
Tea Time Machinations
Cult of Tea
Control
That doesn't help, but it might help somone come up with something useful.
-
hey, I think *I* read that one.
I have to agree with MoD, Koshin is a fine working title. When you have the whole thing outlined, that may be an impetus for a different title if you need one.
-
And as HoM found out, the publisher might make you change it anyway.
-
"A title! A title! We have got a title, and we need no more title!"
(Sorry, that's just the first thing that keeps popping into my mind whenever I read this thread...)
-
I was going to suggest that such things aren't as common in mainstream publishing, but I realized that Tor changed my book title (though it was, like most of the changes we've made, very much a mutual agreement.) We shortened THE SPIRIT OF ELANTRIS to simply ELANTRIS.
Anyway, Morag. I like Koshin. It gives a feel for the book, since it's Asian-themed, and is kind of catchy.
-
I like Koshin as well. It's got a good strong sound to it, and it's original.
And then you can say A title! A title! I have got a title! (Fuzzy, I thought I was the only one.)
-
so it's basicaly the Japanese pronucation. Anyway short titles are actualy better because they're easier to remember and pick out when scanning through a bunch of books at the store.
-
Short titles also allow for better, larger display text on the cover and spine, which makes it more appealing to people browsing.
-
Which are both reasons, incidentally, why they cut my novel's title down.
-
Just as well, since I had completely forgotten it was ever called "The Spirit of Elantris" and have been thinking of it as Elantris for probably 2 years or more.
-
Me too.
-
I think you should call it "The Book I Am Writing About a Kid Named Koshin Who Drinks Tea." I'm really bad at titles--I always have other people name my books.
-
Or TBIAWAAKNKWDT for short.
If you can pronouce it.
-
Well it sounds like TBIAWAAKNKWDT is the winner who wouldn't pick a book off the shelf with that title. I mean you have to find out what it sdands for I read what it stands for and still cann't remember what it means :o
-
Hey, u never know, they might actually accept it... if they're drugged or under pain of death :D
-
Just received this in the mail:
"Robison Wells is pleased to announce the release of his first book
On Second Thought
The first week of March 2004"
Congrats!
-
Well hooray! I got more than half of those back in the mail demanding more postage, so I'm glad to see that some of those actually made it to their intended destination!
-
You sent out your own mailers? Interesting. How did you decide who got one?
-
I was limited by a tiny budget (being poor, as I am) so I sent them out to people that I know that I don't see very often. I assumed that the people I see regularly would already know about the book.
Actually, EUOL, you were on the list, but your address isn't listed anywhere on earth and Ben wouldn't give it to me.
-
I think you misunderstood my intent. That wasn't a "why didn't I get one?" comment. It was a "Interesting. A professional in my field doing marketing. I wonder what his theory on doing it is, and if he thinks it was a success."
-
Ah. The theory is simply that I want to sell as many books as possible during the first couple weeks of release. I doubt that something like this would have any effect on a book released in the national market, but I think it could work well for an LDS book. If I can even get 200 people to head out and buy the book during it's first week, then I think the marketing was worth it. In a market where 70% of the target audience is along the Wasatch Front, word-of-mouth could be very effective.
